SESSION SUMMARY
Bridges are categorized based on the materials they were made of; generally, there are concrete, steel, and
wood bridges. Also, bridges are classified based on the system it was designed to carry load which are the
cable-stayed, suspension, single span, and continuous span. Bridges have two major components which are
the super structure which carries the load (e.g. vehicles) and the substructure which carries the
superstructure.
To be familiarized with the bridges types and components is critical for the design approach which will be
compatible with the current conditions of the location involved.
SELF ASSESSMENT
ACTIVITY 1
“Introduction to Bridge Engineering”
1. Make a brief but direct explanation on the specific conditions (of the location where it will be built)
by which the following types of bridges will be favorably compatible.
a. Wood
b. Concrete
c. Steel
d. Cable- stayed
e. Suspension
f. Truss bridge
