Part I
The research concludes that the intercity type of terminal is one of the most
complicated terminal stations to plan and design because the site is usually located in a
dense, developed area surrounded by existing construction and high land costs. On the
other hand, the planning process should consider the travel time of the users, users
should have easy circulation and communication between ticketing and baggage
functions and the bus interface, these are the matters that should be considered when
planning and designing an intercity bus terminal. In addition, it is convenient to locate
the parking facilities, especially the buses, near the waiting area of the passengers to
minimize walking distance, furthermore, it is also ideal to locate the buses parking near
the egress and ingress of the site to avoid traffic congestion along nearby arteries. The
planning should also mind the safety of the users, though it is convenient to locate the
passengers waiting area near the bus parking, however, there will be movement of both
vehicles and passengers at the same level, safety precautions must be provided to
separate the two as much as possible. Generally, a bus terminal must have these
important spaces; ticket sales, vending machines and/or small snack bar, toilet facilities,
office, baggage, and/or storeroom.
Base on the research, natural disasters happen, in the philippine context, may it be
minor or major casualties, it is important to consider how a structure can withstand any
natural disaster. Currently, the world encountered this pandemic due to COVID-19, to
avoid the spreading of virus, the world was on lockdown. Because of this,
advancements in the quality and design of public infrastructure have often been linked
to public health crises. In accordance with the IBI Group Inc., there are 10 design
solutions on how the current crisis will address that mass transit and any associated
facilities will need to function safely and continually from response to recovery. In
designing a mass transportation network that is ready for the next pandemic, the
following solutions have been identified for the design of rapid transit stations:
1. Integrated Physical Distancing
2. Assessing Station Capacity at the Concept Stage
3. Development of the Exterior Realm
4. Reconfiguring the Touch Zone
5. Enhanced Screening & Sanitization Measures
6. Material Performance Requirements
7. Standards for Air Quality
8. Growth in Active Transportation
9. Improved Messaging
10. Flexibility in Station Design
The design of the bus terminal must be appropriate to the current trends because
this benefits in many factors, may it be; economic growth, users state of feelings, and
city development. AirSage informs that trends in the transportation industry include the
advancement of technology, reliance on big data, transportation Location intelligence,
geographical obstacles, eco-friendly technologies, and reduction of traffic problems.
Part II
In a bus terminal, there should be provision for a loading area, it is a space along the
curb where a single bus can load and unload passengers. The research conducted that
there are various types of platform loading for buses, a specific type of terminal has
different types of stops and arrangements. Listed below are the types of platform
loading for Buses;
1. Linear Loading Platform
The types of platform loading for buses listed above are what a typical bus terminal
has. However, the research states that different types of stops can have different kinds
of loading arrangements.
According to the listed types of the loading area, Straight Tooth Loading and Radial
Saw Tooth Loading is the most convenient type of loading area for a bus terminal. For a
lot that is comparatively deep and narrow, Straight Tooth Loading is ideal. On the other
hand, Radial Saw Tooth Loading is the most efficient because the space required at the
front is minimum wide space at the rear making maneuver easy.
The research concludes that it is important that a bus terminal should have the
following spaces, However, the listed spaces are just the general spaces a bus terminal
should have, the addition of spaces that may seem convenient to the designer is
possible.
1. Public Seating
2. Ticketing Facilities
3. Public Lockers and Telephones
4. Dispatch Office
5. Offices
6. Rental Space
7. Entrances
8. Stairs
9. Queueing Areas
The provision of maneuvering space of a bus terminal for the vehicles especially for
the bus is important when planning a terminal. The most important is the radius along
the curb corner where the bus needs to turn properly. The research states that transit
vehicles typically require an effective turning radius of approximately 20–30 feet,
depending on lane width and the presence of curbside parking lanes or buffer distance.
