Research Proposal Grade 10

This document presents a study that aims to test the feasibility of using cigarette filters and acetone as an alternative glue. The researchers hypothesize that there will be no significant differences between glue made from cigarette filters and commercial glue in terms of color, odor, appearance, state/form, and stickiness. The study will gather cigarette filters, acetone, and other materials to make the cigarette filter glue. Statistical tests like the weighted mean and t-test will then be used to analyze differences between the cigarette filter glue and commercial glue. If no significant differences are found, the cigarette filter glue could serve as a cheaper alternative to commercial glue.

RATIONALE

This experiment aims to develop a product that would serve as an alternative for some expensive

commercial glue. There are many people-using cigarette and after using they just toss aside a

cigarette while walking not thinking that it can be recycle and used. Commercial glue is

relatively expensive because the materials used in manufacturing are tissues from animals. A

cigarette filter is used to strain the dangerous ingredients of the cigarette. Most Filipinos are

smokers or cigarette users which is part of their fashion, but sad to say that they just throw their

waste anywhere and because of this habit we are challenged to find a way to help our beloved

country on its campaign against improper disposal of garbage. The aim of this research is to find

a cheaper and readily available alternative for glue, because glue is useful product especially to

us students. Fifteen pieces of cigarette filter were mixed with 5 ml of acetone. The

adhering/sticking ability of the cigarette glue was tested. Result show that the glue sticks easily

on papers and card boards. The cigarette filter glue can be a substitute to commercial glue. Glue

is very common used in homes, schools and offices. Many people just toss aside a cigarette filter

and it can be recycled and used. Due to the expensiveness and unaffordable of some glue, many

would prefer making homemade glue. Glues from cigarette filter is affordable and easy to

make.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study aims to test the feasibility of using cigarette filter as a source of glue.

Specifically:

Is there a significant difference between glue made by cigarette filter and commercial glue in
terms of:

a. Colour
b. Odor
c. Appearance
d. State/form
e. Stickiness

HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant difference between glue made by cigarette filter and commercial glue in
terms of:

a. Colour
b. Odor
c. Appearance
d. State/form
e. Stickiness
MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE

Materials

 Cigarette Filter

 Acetone

 Cup or Container

 Water

 Stirring Tools

 Strainer

 Scissors

 Gloves

Procedure

Gather all the materials. Remove the cover that attached in the filter. Wash the filter by water.

Dried the filters under the heat of the sun. Cut the filters into tiny pieces. Put the tiny pieces of

filters in a cup or container. Put acetone in the filters and let it dissolve. The substance was

transferred into a clean bottle. Cover and kept in a cool place.

RISK ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY

The student researchers should follow the research standards in conducting experiment, and

maintaining the highest ethical standards that includes; legality, integrity, confidentiality, etc. in

attaining out research activities. In acquiring safety in conducting research experiment, the

student researcher should follow the specific rules and guidelines set by the International Science

and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

DATA ANALYSIS

To answer the statement of the problem and analyze the data gathered, statistical methods

will be employed. The following statistical methods will be used:

1. Weighted mean. To look into the average of some elements with different weights

on the result than other elements in the set.

2. T-test. To determine if there is a significant difference between the means of two

groups which may be related in certain features.
