Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Great Depression

Objectives:
Students will be able to analyze the different causes of the Great Depression
Students will be able to discuss what they have learned about the Great Depression
State Standards: Standard 8.5: Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of world events on
South Carolina and the United States from 1929 to present.
Context: This lesson is an eighth-grade history lesson about The Great Depression. I am
teaching this lesson because it is crucial for the students to know what happened during this time
period. Before this lesson, the students learned background information on the Great Depression.
This means that students will be coming into this lesson already knowing about what happened
during this time. This time period is extremely important for the students to know about because
it has shaped how things are today. After this lesson, the students will know a lot about what life
was like back then. Overall, this lesson will be important in helping the students learn about the
Great Depression.
Data: Students will be divided into groups of 4. The groups will consist of one student that has
performed highly on the last quiz, two students that performed in the middle of the pack, and
then one student that performed poorly on the last quiz. Which will be helpful to students so they
can learn from one another. I think this is the best way to help the poorly performing students do
better. While not making the high performing student have to do all the work. At the end of this
lesson, the students will do a Kahoot. This Kahoot will be composed of questions that I feel the
students should be able to answer after the lesson. The results of the Kahoot will show me if my
lesson was effective in teaching the students what I wanted them to learn.

Materials:
1. The Great Depression: Crash Course US History #33
2. Great Depression Kahoot

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):
I will spend the first five minutes of class allowing the students to answer the DO NOW
on google classroom. Which will be to list three things you remember from yesterday's lesson.
Once I see that majority of students are done, I’ll ask a few students to share what they put.

Teacher Directed (20 minutes):

After the DO Now I will start the YouTube video I put in the materials section. (The
Great Depression: Crash Course US History #33) This video will give students a good
understanding of everything that went into the Great Depression. After the video ends students
will be given a worksheet to reinforce everything they just saw.

Collaborative (20 minutes):

After students complete their worksheet, they will be split into groups with about 4
students in each group. Once they are in groups, they will be given a topic. The topics will be
Stock Market Crash, Dust Bowl, Hooverville, Unemployment, and New Deal. Students will then
have to create a PowerPoint presentation about their topic that follows the requirements on the
rubric. Students will work until the 20 minutes are over and anything not completed will be done
for homework so groups can present next class.

Independent Digital (10 minutes):

Students will then be told to open up Kahoot. I will let them play the Kahoot I put in the
materials section. The students that come in first, second, and third will be given extra credit
points on the next test. First place will receive three points, second place gets two points, and
third place gets one point.

Closure (5minutes):
For the last five minutes students will be told to answer the exit slip on google classroom. The
exit slip will ask them what they did to help their group with their presentation. This will help me
see what students are doing what. It will also help me to see which students are giving effort and
which ones are not. Once they finish, they can pack up and get ready to go to their next class.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Multimedia 1= YouTube video): I chose this video because I feel it does a good job of
explaining what was happening during that time period. The video also relates directly to
the lesson. This video does a good job of explaining such a complex time in a detailed
and easy to follow way that I think the students will find more interesting than having me
stand in front of them lecturing about.

(Multimedia 2= Kahoot): I chose this Kahoot because it is not too long, but it still does a
good job of reinforcing what I want the students to take away from today’s lesson. The
Kahoot will make the students think back on what they have learned and will make sure it
sticks with them better.
