The document discusses pros and cons of having an internal employee, Bill, manage a hotel renovation project versus an outside project manager. While Bill had experience with the hotel and past renovation projects, managing such a large renovation was new for him and it was mismanaged, causing issues for guests and staff. However, the general manager Mitch saw potential in Bill and wanted to give him a chance to grow professionally. While some argue an outside manager may have more experience, others note that internal managers can learn from mistakes and improve. Overall, the document debates if the general manager made a mistake in choosing Bill and if he should be given a second chance to manage phase 2 of the renovation project.

Three pros and cons of having Bill for renovation
The mismanaged staff of Bill did haywire the renovation
process which caused a lot of perturbation among the guests as well as front desk staff. Although Bill grew professionally in future but the process costed the hotel a lot. The three pros are- Bill was hotel’s chief engineer who has had an experience of over five years and had overseen Green Tree’s lobby renovation three years back along with other minor renovation projects Bill had been with property for twelve years thereby ,being well verse with working process of the hotel which in turn resulted in savings because of not hiring Glaze corporation for renovation Bill arrived fresh from trade school ,started off as a mechanic then became an engineer. Mitch ,the general manager of Green Tree hotel ,after reading about Bill’s qualifications gave him the chance to grow professionally by managing such a big renovation project.
The three cons were-
There’s a difference between overseeing a pr4oject and
actually working on it. Bill would have been capable enough only if he had an actual experience of working on a renovation project Arjun singh had over 20 years of experience and had a much larger staff as compared to Bill thereby causing a lot of hassle for guests ,people working on the project as well as the front desk staff receiving complaints Bill’s main area of expertise was engineering itself. He would have worked well as an engineer in the project rather than the project manager because a manager requires financial as well as technical knowledge whereas Bill’s area of expertise was confined to technicalities only.
2. Three pros and cons of having an outside project manager
oversee the renovation-
Pros-
Outside project corporations/managers are professional
renovation project managers. Not only they advice the staff on the working of a hotel ,they also give insights on cost cutting techniques during renovation Outside project managers are well verse with financial ,HR ,marketing as well as technical aspects of a renovation project Nonetheless ,an outside project manager has a much professional team that follows a formal communication chain and work on the project overtime in order to complete the work on time
Cons-
Reputed project managers from outside charge a very
fee for working on renovation projects resulting in the staff getting less salaries at times At time ,project managers interfere in the general working of the management thereby causing misunderstanding among the workers Since ,the main objective of the project manager is to Get the work done on time ,they often disrupt the general working of the hotel which causes agitation among guests because of continuous noise pollution and staff members since their daily tasks are being disturbed.
3. Did Mitch make mistake?
According to my point of view ,every employee must be given a
chance to grow in his/her particular field of expertise. No employee can ever upgrade himself/herself unless and until they do not face challenges. Mitch did not do a mistake by appointing Bill as the renovation project head because Bill is a well qualified engineer and has had an experience of 12 years. Every employee has the tendency to commit some mistakes because ultimately every human learns from his/her mistakes. Mitch gave this opportunity to Bill because he knew that Bill has the potential to work upto his capabilities. Every human tends to be anxious about working on new challenges just like Bill did because handling such a big project for a person who has been a part of minor renovation project is a big deal. Although Bill did not do a great job since it was his first big break ,Mitch did a great job in identifying the talents of his workers and dealing with failure with a calm mind.
4. Should Bill be allowed to manage phase 2 project?
As it was mentioned in the case study that Bill grew professionally
after dealing with his first big renovation project ,he must have got to know his mistakes which he shall not repeat in future .as mentioned in most of the answers ,Bill is a well qualified person and Mitch ,the general manager of the hotel has faith in his work which acts as a motivational factor for Bill to work hard in future projects with minimal mistakes .hence ,Bill should be allowed to manage phase 2 project.
