INTRODUCTION
This chapter deals with the important details that will serve as a guide in solving
problems prevalent in the research. This chapter includes the Introduction, Background of the
Study, Conceptual Framework, Research Hypothesis, Statement of the Problem, Scope and
Delimitations and Significance of the Study, Research Design, and Definition of Terms.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
History repeats itself. It shows that the world has been repeatedly affected by
pandemics over the past decades. December 2019, A new type of Coronavirus broke out in the
city of Wuhan, China. It is called Novel Coronavirus commonly known as COVID-19 virus that
caused illness ranging from a common cold to more severe respiratory diseases that alarmed
the world health organization (WHO) to immediately declare a global health emergency that
later became a pandemic.
Here in the Philippines, the Covid-19 virus started to spread across the country at the
start of February 2020. Within a few weeks, the situation surrounding this virus developed into a
pandemic, paralyzing economies as well as financial markets all over the world and bringing
national health systems to collapse. The Covid-19 pandemic is described as one of the
spreading of human suffering, infecting the Philippine economy and upending people’s lives.
After knowing that a certain Filipino was already a carrier of the virus and so it began
spreading to her family, friends, neighbors and colleagues and all of the individuals that have a
direct contact with her set an alarming situation to the Health Organization. So the Philippine
Government together with the IATF immediately set Health Protocols and dramatically restricted
social life to slow the rapid spread of the virus.
Quarantine is a must and the restrictions ranged from bans on large events and the
closure of schools and universities to a temporary shutdown of the economy so our country
imposed a shutdown and closing most retail stores and services. Simultaneously, consumers
faced growing levels of economic uncertainty because of rising unemployment and short-term
work. Due to the closure of stationary retail stores, online shopping has become the only means
for consumers to satisfy their consumptions needs.
E-commerce has been predominant during the COVID-19 pandemic, and retailers have
put much effort into building, improving and promoting their online stores. Some small retailers
that did not manage online stores before the shutdown developed temporary solutions to sell
their products online, e.g., by posting products on social media sites and by offering product
pick-up or delivery services. Others have offered discounts for their online channels and started
promotion campaigns on social media. Due to increasing demand, companies also invested in
new technical solutions that improve platform performance and enable partners to better
manage their business on online shopping. To ensure that these efforts succeed, it is important
to investigate consumers’ online purchase motives during this pandemic.
Many online selling platforms emerged in the country this quarantine; such as
SHOPPEE, LAZADA, SHEIN, and many more. They all use a high media coverage on their
products in order to attract buyers,
Therefore, this study investigates online shopping preferences of Filipino’s specially
here in our province of Catanduanes. We want to know what drive them to purchase online;
which online platform they prefer and why.
