I, Milton Friedman was born on July 31, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the fourth and
last child and fi rst son of Sarah Ethel (Landau) and Jeno Saul Friedman. My
parents were born in Carpatho-Ruthenia of the Soviet Union, They emigrated
to the U.S. in their teens, meeting in New York. When I was a year old, my
parents moved to Rahway, N.J., a small town about 20 miles from New York
City.
I was awarded a competitive scholarship to Rutgers University. I graduated
from Rutgers in 1932. I financed the rest of my college expenses by the usual
mixture of waiting at tables, clerking in a retail store, occasional

recommendation, the Chicago Economics Department offered me a tuition
scholarship. As it happened, I was also offered a scholarship by Brown
University in Applied Mathematics, but, by that time, I had definitely
transferred my primary allegiance to economics. In 1976 I won the Nobel
Memorial Prize in Economics for my achievements in the fields of
consumption analysis, monetary history and theory and for his demonstration

THE SCIENTIST HELP SHEEP DIES

Keith Campbell, a prominent biologist who worked on cloning Dolly the sheep,

materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Materials ranging from
precious metals to broken glass, from old newspapers to plastic spoons, can
be recycled. The recycling process reclaims the original material and uses it in
new products.

In general, using recycled materials to make new products costs less and
requires less energy than using new materials. Recycling can also reduce
pollution, either by reducing the demand for high-pollution alternatives or by
minimizing the amount of pollution produced during the manufacturing
process.

Paper products that can be recycled include cardboard containers, wrapping

paper, and office paper. The most commonly recycled paper product is
newsprint. In newspaper recycling, old newspapers are collected and searched
for contaminants such as plastic bags and aluminum foil. The paper goes to a
processing plant where it is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp in a
machine that works much like a big kitchen blender. The pulp is screened and
filtered to remove smaller contaminants. The pulp then goes to a large vat
where the ink separates from the paper fibers and fl oats to the surface. The
ink is skimmed off, dried and reused as ink or burned as boiler fuel. The
cleaned pulp is mixed with new wood fibers to be made into paper again.

Experts estimate the average office worker generates about 5 kg of

wastepaper per month. Every ton of paper that is recycled saves about 1.4 cu
m (about 50 cu ft) of landfill space. One ton of recycled paper saves 17
pulpwood trees (trees used to produce paper).

1. The following things can be recycled, EXCEPT....

      A. Precious metals

      B. Broken glass

      C. Old newspapers

      D. Plastic spoons

      E. Fresh vegetables and fruits

2. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of recycling?

      B. It costs less to make new products

      C. It requires less energy

      D. It can reduce pollution

      E. It reduces the demand for high-pollution alternatives

3. What is the third step of recycling paper products?

      A. Collect and search for contaminants such as plastic bags and
aluminium foil

      B. Mix the paper with hot water in a blender which turns it into pulp

      C. Screen and filter the pulp to remove smaller contaminants
      D. Put the pulp to a large vat to separate the ink from the paper
fibres

Read the following text to answer questions number 5 to 10.

Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides,
and other air pollutants dissolved in it. Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH
of 6. Acid rain may have a pH value as low as 2.8.

Acid rain can severely damage both plant and animal life. Certain lakes, for
example, have lost all fish and plant life because of acid rain.

Acid rain comes from sulfur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulfur
dioxide (SO2 ). Most sulfur leaves factory chimneys as the gaseous sulfur
dioxide (SO2 ) and most nitrogen are also emitted as one of the nitrogen
oxides (NO or NO2 ), both of which are gasses. The gasses may be dry
deposited–absorbed directly by the land, by lakes or by the surface vegetation.
If they are in the atmosphere for anytime, the gasses will oxidize (gain an
oxygen atom) and go into solution as acids. Sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 ) and the
nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3 ). The acids usually dissolve in
cloud droplets and may travel great distances before being precipitated as
acid rain.

Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and ammonium help promote the
formation of acids in clouds. More ammonium (NH4 ) can be formed when
some of the acids are partially neutralized by airborne ammonia (NH3 ).
Acidification increases with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved
in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by, for example, car exhausts will react in
sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone. Although it is invaluable in the
atmosphere, low-level ozone causes respiratory problems and also hastens
the formation of acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it dissolves and
liberates heavy metals and aluminum (Al). When it is washed into lakes,
aluminum irritates the outer surfaces of many fish. As acid rain falls or drains
into the lake the pH of the lake falls. Forests suffer the effect of acid rain
through damage to leaves, through the loss of vital nutrients, and through the
increased amounts of toxic metals liberated by acid, which damage roots and
soil microorganisms.

The government should Provide rehabilitation Program for Drug Users

Drug users are actually ill people who need help. Rehabilitation is one of the
main things they should get. Instead of punishing drug users in prisons, the
government should provide rehabilitation for them.
Most users are actually victims of persuasive peddlers and they suffer from
consuming the drugs. Therefore, by rehabilitating them, we are actually
helping them out from traps, which they might accidentally step on.

If we only arrest drug users and send them to jail, this doesn't solve the
problem as drug users will still be addicted unless proper rehabilitation is
imposed to them. Providing rehabilitation programs for drug users and forcing
them to participate in the programs is better than only arresting them and
doing nothing to their illness. Only drug dealers, traffickers, and wholesalers
should be imprisoned.

1. Most drug users get drugs from ....

Read the following text to answer questions number 7 to 10.

The use of formalin and other dangerous preservatives in food has been
serious problem for three reasons. Firstly, formalin is not for human beings,
but it is for biological specimens and experiments. Formalin in Biology is a
10% solution of formaldehyde in water which is usually used as a disinfectant
or to preserve biological specimens. Thus, it is not for food preservatives. Of
course when it is used for food preservative, it will be very dangerous to
human’s body.

The second reason is that there is no tight control from the government. This
condition makes the people’s health is really in a threat. When the control is
weak and the use formalin was spread wide all over the Indonesian regions,
and these days it has really happened, the citizen's bodies will be badly
contaminated with the poisons. Fish or food traders still sell their products
which contain formalin and dangerous preservatives. Can you imagine that
our digestive system absorbs the substance that should be for the human and
animal corpses?

Considering the reasons, we can make a conclusion that the use of formalin
and other preservatives is really a serious problem if it is not resolved
immediately.

7. Why is formalin dangerous for human`s body?

      A. It is not food preservatives

      B. It is a disinfectant for human beings

 Advertisements

There are many reasons for both sides of the question, "Should we have
printed advertisement'?" Many people have strong views and feel that ads are
nothing more than useless junk mail, while other people feel it is important
source information.

There are some reasons why we should have advertisement in newspaper and
magazines. One reason is ads give us information about what is available.
Looking at ads we can find out what is on sale and what is new in the market.
This is an easy way of shopping. Another reason is that advertisement
promotes business. When shop owners compete against each other the buyer
saves money, more people come to their shops and they sell more goods.

On the other hand, some people argue that ads should not be put in
newspapers and magazines for these various reasons. Firstly, ads cost the
shopkeepers a lot of money to print onto paper. Also some people don't like
finding junk mail in their letter boxes. Ads also influence people to buy items
they don't need and can't really afford. Ads use up a lot of space and a lot of
effort has to be made the ads eye-catching.

After looking at both sides of issue, I think we should not have advertisements
because they cost a lot of money and take up a lot of room in the papers. I
don't think I find some of them interesting. I mainly disagree because it's junk
mail.

1. Why does the writer present two sides of opinions of advertisements?

      A. She/he wants to take side

      B. She/he wants to be in the affirmative side

      C. The ads promote unnecessary service products

      D. The ads inform us tips of easy shopping

      E. The ads become the source of information

Read the following text to answer questions number 6 to 10.

Muslim’s Headscarf

The right to freedom of religion is enshrined in the UN charter and considered

by many to be a basic human right. Some religions require special diet, others
prayer at specific times. Why should a religious mode of dress receive as
much protection as these other aspects of religious freedom?

Many Muslim women view the veil as a means to protect their modesty and
privacy. Just as we would not force any women to be seen in public in her
underwear if she did not feel comfortable doing so, why should a woman be
forced to show her hair if she does not want to? Modesty is a personal
judgement, some are comfortable in the smallest bikini while others prefer a
lot more clothing. No one but the woman herself should make that decision.

Muslim women are not the only ones to feel coerced over their mode of dress.
Most people are affected by the societal norms surrounding them. Fashion
trends could be seen in exactly the same light as religious traditions.

Banning head coverings is only likely to provoke a more extreme reaction

among highly religious communities. Framing laws to ban only Islamic forms
of dress could be considered an attack on one religion. Feeling under attack
could cause the Islamic community to close off into itself. They could set up
religious schools where their children can dress as they want them to and not
mix with children from other faiths. These effects could never be good for the
integration of society and would further the influence of extremists.
Internationally, the perceived attack on Islamic values would inflame wider
Muslim opinion, feed conspiracy theories and add to the dangerous feeling
that there is a clash of civilizations.
Intolerant schools make up problems as an excuse for not allowing Muslims
freedom of religious expression. In a multicultural society, students should be
aware of the different religious practice and cultural traditions of their
classmates, and be taught to understand and respect these.

Based on the above discussion, the government should not banned Muslim’s
headscarf as a part of school or office uniforms.

Have you ever wondered how people get chocolate from? In this article we'll enter the amazing world of
chocolate so you can understand exactly what you're eating.

Chocolate starts with a tree called the cacao tree. This tree grows in equatorial regions, especially in
places such as South America, Africa, and Indonesia. The cacao tree produces a fruit about the size of a
small pine apple. Inside the fruit are the tree's seeds, also known as cocoa beans.

The beans are fermented for about a week, dried in the sun and then shipped to the chocolate maker.
The chocolate maker starts by roasting the beans to bring out the flavour. Different beans from
different places have different qualities and flavor, so they are often sorted and  blended to produce a
distinctive mix. Next, the roasted beans are winnowed. Winnowing removes the meat nib of the cacao
bean from its shell. Then, the nibs are blended. The blended nibs are ground to make it a liquid. The
liquid is called chocolate liquor. It tastes bitter. All seeds contain some amount of fat, and cacao beans
are not different. However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the ground nibs form liquid. It's pure
