Lesson 1
Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOC)
Learning Competency:
Describe the impact of massive open online.
Unlocking of
Difficulties
• Massive Open
Online Course or
MOOC - is a free
Web-based distance
learning program
that is designed for
the participation of
large numbers of
geographically
dispersed students.
In 2011, the advancement of Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs took the world by
storm through its great prominence and accessibility to state-of-the-art knowledge at an
economical and flexible format. As the society demands for the need of higher education,
MOOCs were engineered to deliver a solution which disregards geographical, academic, and
monetary requirements. At present, MOOCs are growing in size, scope, and number,
launching a novel educational paradigm for the time-conscious information era.

The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier, from the University of Prince
Edward Island for a course offered by the University of Manitoba, "Connectivism and
Connective Knowledge." MOOC is an online course with the option of free and open
registration, a publicly-shared curriculum, and open-ended outcomes. MOOCs integrate
social networking, accessible online resources, and are facilitated by leading practitioners in
the field of study. Most significantly, MOOCs build on the engagement of learners who self-
organize their participation according to learning goals, prior knowledge and skills, and
common interests.
MOOC is an open access with no tuition fees, exposing top level professors at different
universtities that would otherwise be unavailable to much of the world's population. It is
also an open courses for all interested, regardless of location, resulting in a more diverse
student base. Students can collaborate with their peers, share work, critique and receive
others feedback from different parts of the world. It provides an online interaction among
students and professors in which they have found global sharing of knowledge as more
appealing. Many acknowledge that MOOCs help them reevaluate their pedagogical methods,
while improving knowledge sharing.
However, MOOCs make it easy for students to drop out. It does not provide active
feedback due to large number of enrollees. Students need to be responsible for their own
work because MOOCs provide self-directed learning, sometimes technical problems and
limited real world engagement.
2. Collaborative Learning
One key aspect of MOOCs is their collaborative component. During a MOOC,
everything possible is done to recreate the in-class experience, including the use of
collaborative tools. Rather than a vertical distribution of knowledge, MOOCs allow for the
emergence of learning communities where the input of each participant enriches the course.
Social Q&A Forums (advanced forums with voting functionalities), Facebook groups,
meetups, or peer corrections are used to encourage and develop collaboration.
3. Assessing Knowledge
In addition to content designed to convey knowledge, MOOCs offer tools to assess the
transfer and retention of this knowledge. These modules help make courses more dynamic
and interactive and generally take the form of multiple-choice exams, programmed tests, or
essay questions that are corrected automatically, by teachers or by classmates. Additionally,
MOOCs can offer certificates to those who have completed the course. These certificates are
how most American MOOC platforms monetize their content.

4. Time Limits
The final characteristic of MOOCs is the notion of time limitations. MOOCs have
specified start and end dates. Course content (documents, videos, exercises, etc.) is delivered
sequentially, each week. For the learner, coursework is spread over time. Temporally
structuring course content helps make it seem like a series of mini events and allows for the
creation of an efficient communication strategy including teasers, email updates, etc. It is
also an effective means to ensure that the MOOC mimics a traditional attended course with
weekly classes.
All of these criteria combined create MOOCs. Taken apart, they were already present
in online learning, in some form or another. What made the MOOC format unique is that for
the first time all of these elements were used simultaneously in a single course format.
