The rainforest consists of four layers - the forest floor, understory, canopy, and emergent layer. The forest floor and understory receive little sunlight but support decomposers and plants with broad leaves. 3. The canopy is where most activity occurs, with leaves adapted to shed water and allow only 20% of sunlight to pass through. It is home to fruits, flowers, and animals like tree frogs.

READING
I. Read the passage given below.

1. Maharana Pratap ruled over Mewar for only twenty-five years and during that period his glory
surpassed the boundaries of countries and time turning him into an immortal personality. He,
along with his kingdom, became a synonym for valour, sacrifice and patriotism. Mewar had been
a leading Rajput kingdom even before Maharana Pratap occupied the throne. Kings of Mewar,
with the cooperation of their nobles and subjects, had established such traditions in the kingdom
that deepened its magnificence despite the hurdles of being a small kingdom with less population.
There did come a few difficult occasions when the flag of the kingdom seemed to waver but it
once again touched the sky, thanks to the gallantry and brilliance of the people of Mewar.
2. The destiny of Mewar was always in good hands and barring a few kings, most of the rulers were
competent and patriotic. This glorious tradition of the kingdom continued for about 1,500 years
since its establishment under the reign of Bappa Rawal. Rulers like Rana Sanga and Maharana
Pratap took the kingdom to the pinnacle of fame and their reputation went beyond Rajasthan and
reached Delhi. The legendary Rana was not just a warrior but had a very strong inclination
towards writing and in fact, his self-composed poetry is read with reverence, even today. The
ambience of the kingdom was conducive to the creation of high-quality work of art and literature.
These accomplishments were the outcome of a longstanding tradition, sustained by several
generations. In fact, two generations before him, Rana Kumbha had given a new stature to the
kingdom through a lot of extraordinary work in the field of literature and art.
3. The life of the people of Mewar must have been peaceful and prosperous during the long span of
time; otherwise, such extraordinary accomplishments in these fields would not have been
possible. This is reflected in their art and literature as well as their loving nature. The hospitality
of Mewar remains incomparable, thanks to the cheerful and liberal character of its people.
4. One may observe astonishing pieces of workmanship, not only in the forts and palaces of Mewar
but also in public utility buildings. Ruins of many structures which are still standing tall in their
grandeur are testimony to the fact that Mewar was not only the land of the brave but also a seat of
art and culture. Amidst aggression and bloodshed, literature and art flourished and creative
pursuits of literature made sure that artists were not marginalised. Imagine, how glorious the
period must have been when the Vijaya Stambha(depicting the valour of the rulers of Mewar)
and the Kirti Stambha (depicting the Jain community) were constructed in the Chittor fort and the
beautiful work of our great ancient architecture was depicted through them. They reflected the
liberal administration which allowed people from other communities and kingdoms to come and
carry out construction work in Mewar. It is useless to indulge in the debate, whether the Vijaya
Stambha was constructed first or the Kirti Stambha but the fact is that both are standing side-by-
side and they reveal the equality between the rulers and the common man.
5. But the cycle of time does not remain the same and as the reign of Rana Sanga was crucial in
raising the kingdom to the acme of glory, it also proved to be the period when Mewar started
losing its hold in India. History took a turn and the fortune of Mewar, the land of the brave,
started waning. Rana tried to save the kingdom with his acumen but was unable to do so and
slowly the downfall of one of the greatest kingdoms of India began.

II. Read the passage given below

1. The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of nearly 2.8 million square
miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The Amazon rainforest gets its life from
the majestic Amazon River, the world’s second largest river, which runs directly through the heart of
the region. The rainforest itself is simply the drainage basin for the river and its many tributaries. The
vast forest itself consists of four layers, each featuring its own ecosystems and specially adapted
plants and animals.

2. The forest floor is the lowest region of the forest. Since only two per cent of the sunlight filters
through the top layers to the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor, however, is rich
with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are quickly broken down into
nutrients by decomposers such as millipedes and earth worms and then used as nutrients by the plants.

3. The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2-5 per
cent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory have large,
broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick that there is very little
air movement. As a result, plants rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.

4. The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the rainforest
occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form ‘drip tips. Drip trips allow
water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and lichens from occupying the leaves.
Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about 80 per cent of the sunlight. The canopy is where
the wealth of the rainforest’s fruits and flowers grow. Bromeliads, cut-like plants, provide drinking
pools for animals and breeding locations for tree frogs.
