Axially Loaded Columns
Failure of Modes of Columns:

Crushing (governs for short columns)

Failure of Modes of Columns:

Buckling (governs for long columns)

Classification of Column
𝐿𝐿
1. Short column/ posts = the slenderness ratio ,
𝑑𝑑
is equal or less than 15

𝐿𝐿
2. Long column = the slenderness ratio ,
𝑑𝑑
is greater than 15 but less than 50

COLUMN

where:
𝐶𝐶 p = stress in MPa
p=
𝐴𝐴 C = maximum axial load
A = cross sectional area of column
Straight line formula or Winslow Formula (stress reduction formula)

1. Short column, 𝐿𝐿⁄𝑑𝑑 ≤ 15

p = 0.75 𝑓𝑓𝑝𝑝
2. Long column, 𝐿𝐿⁄𝑑𝑑 > 15
< 50
p = 𝑓𝑓𝑝𝑝 1 − ⁄60𝑑𝑑
𝐿𝐿

where:
L = unsupported length of column
d = least dimension of column
𝑓𝑓𝑝𝑝 = allowable compressive stress parallel to grain
p = maximum allowable compressive stress that a column
can resist
Example No. 1

Compute the maximum allowable load for a 150mm x 200mm column having an
unsupported length of 4m. Use Molave with 𝑓𝑓𝑝𝑝 = 15.40 MPa.

150mm x 200mm
L = 4m
𝐿𝐿 4000
= = 26.67 > 15 ∴ 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐
𝑑𝑑 150

p = 𝑓𝑓𝑝𝑝 1 − 𝐿𝐿⁄60𝑑𝑑
p = 15.40[1 – (26.67⁄60)]
p = 8.55 MPa
