Elective II: Traffic Engineering and Management

Traffic engineering deals with the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on road networks. It aims to improve traffic performance and supports the majority of intra-city transportation. Traffic engineering analyzes traffic stream characteristics like road users, vehicles, and roadway features. It also measures traffic demand and influences demand through reducing, shifting, or repackaging approaches. The goal is to serve transportation purposes safely and efficiently.

Traffic Engineering and Management

Ch 1: Traffic Stream Characteristics
Definition
Transportation Engineering

is defined as the application of technology and scientific

principles to the planning, functional design, operation and
management of facilities for any mode of transportation in
order to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable,
convenient, economical and environmentally compatible
movement of people and goods.
Traffic Engineering

is defined as the phase of transportation engineering

that deals with the planning, geometric design and
traffic operations of roads, streets and highways, their
networks, terminals, abutting lands and relationships
with other modes of transportation. (ITE)
Traffic Engineering

is the science of measuring traffic and travel, the study of

the basic laws relating to traffic flow and generation and
application of this knowledge to the professional practice of
planning, designing and operating traffic systems to achieve
safe and efficient movements of goods and people. (Prof.
Ress Blunden, California University)
Traffic Engineering

 deals with the safe and efficient movement of

people and goods on streets and highways

 deals with the improvement of traffic performance

of road networks and terminals
Traffic Engineering
• nation’s lifeblood circulation system

• the most important part of national infrastructure

• supports the vast majority of inter and intra city movements

of goods and people
The system of facilities
- freeways Travel Demand
- arterials - Trip generation rates
- intersections - mode split
- others - route selection

Influencing the Demand

Measuring the performance
- reducing
- system
- shifting
- user
- Repackaging

out of it?
- Is it different? - Can it be done?
- What the system operator - How?
would desire? - Why?
- How does the system get
