Arson activity essay type

1. How do fire investigators determine arson?

 Fire and arson investigators examine the physical attribute of a fire scene and identify and collect
physical evidence from the scene. This evidence is then analyzed to help determine if the cause of
fire was accidental or deliberate. During the scene examination, investigators may find evidence
such as accelerants, tampered utilities, and specific burn patterns, which may indicate criminal
activity.

2. Who investigates arson cases?

 Putting out fires and finding out how they started involves public officials and private groups such
as fire departments, emergency medical services and law enforcement. Law enforcement and fire
service departments must always determine the cause of the fire, whether arson or accidental, in
order to identify hazards and dangerous practices and prevent future fires.

3. What are the four basic lines of inquiry in the investigation of arson?
 Successful investigations of automobile fires come from the following basic lines of inquiry: first, the
inspection of the salvage to secure evidence of the origin of the fire; second, an investigation into
the car owner's history to secure evidence of motive and opportunity; third, the locating and
questioning of witnesses who might have information concerning the loss; and fourth, the cross-
examination of the owner to the point of certainty that he is relating the true facts relative to the fire.

4. What are the major objectives of a fire scene investigation?

 One of the major objectives of a fire scene is recognition, identification, and analysis of fire
patterns. This objective can be accomplished by the investigator through understanding the fire
dynamics that produced the fire patterns. Another objective of the fire scene investigation is the
determining if a crime occurred in link with the fire. In the event that the fire is a result of arson, it is
of great importance to determine that a crime occurred and evidence must be gathered
immediately. This is done to give way for arrest to be made. If the fire was due to natural or
accident, measures should be stipulated so as to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The
exact cause of accidental fire must also be determined. This is done because of the fact that either
people or companies that were given the mandate might bear the responsibility (National Fire
Protection Association, 2012).
