CHAPTER 2
ROOTS AND RADICALS
QUARTER 2
LESSON
WEEK
Overview
In this lesson, it focuses on the operations involving radical expressions. It
discusses the rules in adding, subtracting radicals.
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, you are expected to:
1. Add and subtract radicals;
2. Simplify radical sums and differences, and;
3. Simplify more complicated radical expressions.
Learning Activities
Objective 1 Add and subtract radicals
Only like radicals – those that are multiples of the same root of the same
number – can be combined.
Example 1
Add or subtract, as indicated.

4 4 Denominator
Overview
Although calculators now make it fairly easy to divide by a radical in an
expression such as , it is sometimes easier to work with radical expression if
√
the denominators do not contain radicals. For example, the radical in the
denominator of can be eliminated by multiplying the numerator and
√
denominator by √ , since √ √ √ .
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, you are expected to:
1. Rationalize denominators with square roots;
2. Write radicals in simplified form, and;
3. Rationalize denominators with cube roots.
