Welcome to the the 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World–
Grade 12 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Dimensions of Philippine Literary History
and Representative Texts and Authors from Each Region!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts:

Objectives: This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you
are expected to learn in the module.

Motivation: This part includes an activity that aims to check what you already
know about the lesson to take. It also includes a brief drill or
review to help you link the current lesson with the previous one.

Instruction: This section provides a brief discussion of the lesson. This aims to
help you discover and understand new concepts and skills.

Practice: This comprises activities for independent practice to solidify your


understanding and skills of the topic.

Enrichment: In this portion, another activity will be given to you to enrich your
knowledge or skill of the lesson learned. This also tends retention
of learned concepts.

Evaluation: This is a task which aims to evaluate your level of mastery


in achieving the learning competency.
INSTRUCTION

3. American Colonial Era

Public school system – biggest contribution of American occupation.


Thomasites – American soldiers who came to the Philippines to become teachers.
Angela Manalang Gloria – used free verse in writing her poetry about illicit love.

Sa kabila ng pag unlad ng panitikan dahil sa pagsakop ng mga amerikano, patuloy pa rin ang paggamit
ng ilang manunulay ng wikang Filipino at maging ng dayalekto.

Active arousal in the newspapers.


EL NUEVO DIA (The New Day) Established by Sergio Osmeña in 1900. The
American censors twice banned this and threatened
Osmeña with banishment because of his
nationalistic writings.
EL GRITO DEL PUEBLO (The Call of the Established by Pascual Poblete in 1900.
Nation).
EL RENACIMIENTO (The Rebirth). Founded by Rafael Palma in 1901.

Characteristics of Literature during this period


The languages used in writing were Spanish and Tagalog and the dialects of the different regions, but
Spanish and Tagalog predominated.
Love for one’s native tongue.
Imitation of the themes and methods of the Americans.

4. Contemporary Colonial Era

Between 1941-1945, Philippine Literature was interrupted in its development when the
Philippines were again conquered by another foreign country, Japan. Philippine literature in
English came to a halt. Except for the TRIBUNE and the PHILIPPINE REVIEW, almost all
newspapers in English were stopped by the Japanese.

FILIPINO POETRY DURING THIS PERIOD


The common theme of most poems during the Japanese occupation was nationalism,
country, love, and life in the barrios, faith, religion and the arts.

Three types of poems emerged during this period.


Haiku Butterflies are cool
A poem of free verse that the Japanese like. In the big, huge, green forest.
The first line had 5 syllables, the second, 7 They fly up so high.
syllables, and the third, five. The Haiku is
allegorical in meaning, is short and covers a
wide scope in meaning
Tanaga – like the Haiku, is short but it had SANGGOL
measure and rhyme. Each line had 17 syllables (Emelita Perez Baes)
and it’s also allegorical in meaning. Pag ang sanggol ay ngumiti
nawawala ang pighati,
pag kalong mo’y sumisidhi
ang pangarap na punyagi.
