IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction What I need to know?
This module was designed and written with leaner in mind. It is here
to help learner master polynomials and polynomial equations and other
concepts related to it. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed
to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
Good day everyone! Yes! Finally this is the last topic for First
Quarter. In this module, the learner will be exploring real-life applications of
polynomials and polynomial equations. After utilizing this module, the learner
are expected to solve problems involving polynomials and polynomial
equations (M10AL-Ij-2).
What’s in?
The teacher will provide an activity to recall the knowledge of the
learners in factoring polynomials. To determine the mastery level of the learner
about factoring polynomials, they will answer the guided questions.
Decoding Activity: Express the following polynomial equation in factored
form. Choose among the choices from each factors at the right and write the
corresponding letter to form a word.
1. x3+6x2+11x+6=0 E (x-5) (x+3) (x+4)
2. x3-x2-10x-8=0 A (x-2) (x-1) (x+) (x+1)
3. x3+2x2-23x-20=0 R (x-4) (x+1) (x+2)
4. 2x4-3x3-4x2+3x+2=0 G (x+1) (x+2) (x+3)
5. 3x4-16x3+21x2+4x-12=0 T (x-3) (x-2) (x-1) (x+)
Guided Questions:
1. What is the word that will describe a 21st century learner like you?
2. What did you do to get that word?
3. Did you find difficulty in finding polynomial equations? Why?
4. What did you do to choose polynomial equations?
5. Do you have prior knowledge about polynomial equations?
6. How did you use your idea in eliminating equations that are not
polynomials?
7. Were you able to get them all? Great Job!
B. Development What I know?
The learner will answer the multiple choice questions. Read each
problem carefully, then encircle the letter that correspond to your answer:

What’s new?
This activity focuses on the application of learned concepts on
polynomials and polynomial equations. The learner are going to solve
problems involving polynomials and polynomial equations.
Study the problem below and give what is being asked.
What is it?
Below are important concepts to consider in solving problems
involving polynomials and polynomial equations.
A polynomial is an expression which consists of two or more than two
algebraic expressions. In a polynomial expression, the same variable has
different powers. If the polynomial is added to another polynomial, the
resulting expression is also a polynomial. The same goes with the operations of
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Suggestions:
Read the problem entirely and get a feel for the whole problem
List information and the variables you identify
Work in an organized manner. This will help you think clearly
Draw and label all figures and pictures clearly
Examples:
1. The length of a room exceeds its width by 2 meters. If the length and the
width are both increased by 1m, then the area increases by 11m2. Find the
length and width of the room.
Solution
Step 1: Let x be the width, then (x + 2) is the length
Step 2: Draw and label the rectangle clearly
Activity 1: For each item below, give a polynomial equation with integer
coefficients that has the following roots.
1. -1, 3, -6
2. -2, -7, 2, 7
3. 0, -4, -5, 1
4. 2, -3, 5, 3
5. 2, -1, 2, 7, 4
Activity 2: Word Problem
1. The area of a rectangle is given by the polynomial expression x3 – 2x2
– 11x + 12 and its length given by x – 4. Find the width of the
rectangle.
2. The length of the Math Club bulletin board in LPIHS is 12 inches
longer than the width. If the length and the width are both increased
by 1m, then the area increases by 5m2. Find the length and width of
the room.
