Science-8: National Christian Life College

This document contains an activity to teach students about tracking tropical cyclones and determining whether they have entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It includes plotting example latitude and longitude points on a map to show the boundaries of the PAR. Students are asked questions to track the path of Typhoon Sendong using its recorded coordinates, including when it formed, entered the PAR, and exited the PAR. The overall goal is to help students understand how PAGASA monitors tropical cyclones in the PAR and determine if their location could be affected.

ACTIVITY 1
Plotting the PAR
Objectives:

After performing this activity, you should be able to:

1. read map,
2. given the latitude and longitude of a tropical cyclone, tell if it has entered the Philippine
Area of Responsibility, and

3. explain what is meant when a typhoon has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Materials Needed:
 map of the Philippines and vicinity

 pencil

Procedure:
1. Plot the following points on the map below (Figure 2).

2. Connect the plotted points in Figure 2. The region within is the Philippine Area of Responsibility or
PAR. It is the job of PAGASA to monitor all tropical cyclones that enter this area.

Q1. If a typhoon is located at 15°N, 138°E, is it within the PAR?

Answer: NO

The PAR or the Philippine Area o Responsibility is the indicator of Pagasa (Philippine

Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) is located at the
following co-ordinates:

25°N 120°E

25°N 135°E

5°N 135°E

5°N 115°E

15°N 115°E

21°N 120°E

When a typhoon is inside any of the above points of the Philippines, The typhoon will be
given a local name as it will most probably cause rainfall in the country.

The given co-ordinates in the question given indicates that the typhoon is still far from the
PAR.

It will fall near

15°N 115°E

Q2. How about if the typhoon is at 19°N, 117°E, is it inside the PAR?
Answer: PAR is an acronym word of Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Philippine Area of Responsibility lies in

25 degrees north to 120 degrees east, 25 degrees north to 135 degrees east, 5 degrees north to 115 degrees east, 15 degrees north
to 115 degrees east, and 21 degrees north to 120 degrees east.

If a typhoon is at 19 degrees N and 117 degrees E. THE TYPHOON IS NOT IN A PAR.

ACTIVITY 2
Tracking the Path of a Typhoon

Objectives:

After performing this activity, you should be able to:

1. determine if your location is in the path of a tropical cyclone, given the latitude and longitude
position and
2. explain why PAGASA regularly monitors when a tropical cyclone is within PAR.

Materials Needed:
 map with the PAR (from Activity 1)
 tracking data
 pencil

Procedure:
1. Use the latitude and longitude (lat-long) in the table below to track the location of Sendong. Plot
each lat-long pair on the map with the PAR.
Q3. Where did Sendong form?
THE TYPHOON S ENDONG FORMED IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN ON 13 TH OF D ECEMBER 2011.

Q4. When did Sendong enter the PAR?

THE TYPHOON S ENDONG ENTERED THE PAR (P HILIPPINE A REA OF R ESPONSIBILITY ) ON 15 TH OF D ECEMBER 2011

Q5. When did Sendong leave the PAR?

THE TYPHOON S ENDONG LEFT THE PAR ON 16 TH OF D ECEMBER 2011

Q6. In what direction did Sendong move?

The typhoon Sendong moved in the northwest direction.
