TOPIC: EDUCATING MA STUDENTS ON potential referral needs in order to get a

referral for DENTAL CARIES,


Goal: to have MA student identify the caries and be able to tell the doctor that
they think the patient has caries which will allow the doctor working with them to
refer them to the right place.
“These are things to look for dentally when a patient comes in”

Who we are working with


● Medical Assistant program (AM group) at PIMA

Meeting / Time Log:


● Meeting 1
○ After class on 10/12 we chose a topic, thought of reaching out to Marys
place, and found articles
● Meeting 2
○ We all found articles, found different organizations and decided to reach
out to Center of Hope since we have someone who knows someone
there.
● Meeting 3:
○ We all met for the orientation of YWCA - this was a 2 hours
○ Maki talked to her afterwards and our correspondent at YWCA told us she
will get back to us on what sites we will be doing.
● Meeting 4:
○ We talked about the woman from YWCA letting us know what site we will
be going to and what time we will be doing this
○ We came up with questions that we will pass out and get quantitative data
from
● Meeting 5
○ We have not heard back from the rep from YWCA so we emailed her to let
her know we are on a time crunch and to let us know ASAP where and
when we will be presenting to the children
○ Creating more questions for questionnaire
○ We talked about switching to the MA program!!!!!! WHAAAA???
● Meeting 6
○ We talked most about the MA program since they are responding better
○ Maki reached out via email and Desi talked to the program coordinator of
the MA program in person and told her about it. We finalized patients'
preliminary questions that we will give her in order to see where her
class’s dental IQ is.
○ We finalized the before and after questions that will be given to the
student before and after the presentation
● Meeting 7
○ We talked about the new preliminary assessment questions and finalized
those.
○ We got a final topic and goal and are moving forward with getting the
powerpoint ready and getting more references.
○ We finalized the date of 12/9 so we are getting ready to present

1. Introduction
This section should be a brief paragraph or two describing the problem and justification for the
project. Include a brief description of the target population.

2. Assessment
Research the problem
● Articles from at least 7 references. References should be less than ten years old and include:
■ At least three scientific journal articles (required)
■ Textbooks
■ Official national public health websites and resources
■ Other reliable literature
■ Interviews / consultations with resource people. Include the person’s name, title,
occupation, workplace and a brief summary of any conversations and the date.
■ Washington State Health Department Survey information, statistics, and
resources (www.doh.wa.gov). Also any survey information or statistics from
official national public health websites (NIH, CDC, ASTDD, etc.).
Data Collection and Community Needs Assessment
● Further details and scientific information about the problem (caries in young children, how
streptococcus mutans is transferred from mother to child, perio or xerostomia in elderly, etc.)
● Community profile:
§ List population characteristics of the target group you have selected with similarities
and differences from your literature review.
§ Describe demographic data, knowledge, attitudes and practices, values and culture,
oral health and/or dental disease status, and the impact of current oral health levels.
· Survey target population
· Describe survey techniques to be employed, both primary and secondary
(questionnaire, interview questions, state public health department information,
indices, etc.)
● Compare oral health status with state and national data.
● Include facts about dental resources and existing programs.

assessment methods, response of target population, etc.
· Describe limitations of project, problems encountered (formative assessment)
· Suggestion: take pictures to help with visual aids for the presentation at the end of the
semester.
