Lab 2 - GENG2340 - 2021

This document provides instructions for Lab #2 in the GENG2340-1&2 Electrical and Computing Fundamentals course. It details that students must submit a lab report in Blackboard by December 3rd containing Multisim simulations and calculations for 3 circuits with parts analyzing voltage, current, and transient behavior. Calculated values must be validated against simulation results. The lab is worth a total of 5 marks.

GENG2340-1&2 Electrical and Computing Fundamentals

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Faculty of Engineering
University of Windsor

Semester: Fall 2021

Lab #2 Manual

Deadline: Friday December 3, 2021, at 12:00pm (noon)

Instruction:
• Lab report (a word or PDF document that contains all necessary images, solutions, and
answers) must be submitted through Blackboard prior to the above-mentioned deadline.
• Email submission will not be accepted and will receive 0 mark.
• Late submission will not be accepted, and student will receive 0 mark.
• No mark will be given to answers without the unit.
• Students are required to use Multisim software (available free of charge) to simulate the
circuits.
a. https://www.multisim.com/
b. “Description” of the circuit must be the “Student Number-Student Initial-Lab2”.
• Students may work in a group of maximum 5.
• Each student is required to submit an individual lab report.
a. Group submission is not allowed and will receive 0 mark.
b. When taking screenshot of the circuit, make sure the “Description = Student ID
Number - Student Initial – Lab 2” is clearly shown in the image. Otherwise, the
solution will not be marked and will receive 0.
c. The instructor / GAs may ask students to share their circuits directly from their
NI/Multisim account at any time during the semester to validate their circuit
authenticity. The shared circuit(s) should 100% match the circuit(s)/images in the
lab report, otherwise students will receive 0 mark in the lab.
d. All requested parameters must be probed and clearly visible in all images.
Otherwise, the lab report will not be marked and will receive 0.
• For all questions that require calculations, no mark will be given to just a final answer. In
order to receive mark, students must provide the work and solution leading to the final
answer, clearly showing each and every step.
• Total Mark: 5.0

GENG2340-1 & 2 – Lab #2, Fall 2021 1

Part 2.1 (1.5 Marks)
a) Calculate Vo in the circuit shown in Fig 2.1 (0.7 Mark)
b) Simulate the same circuit shown in Fig 2.1 in Multisim and probe V0. (0.7 Mark)
c) Validate your answer in part a with simulation result in part b. Clearly state whether the
values obtained in part a are the same as part b. If not, explain your answer. (0.1 Mark)

Fig. 2.1

Part 2.2 (1.5 Marks)

a) Calculate the voltage at node B with respect to ground (node E) and the current Ix
through the branch with the inductor in the circuit shown in Fig. 2.2 (0.7 Mark)
b) Simulate the same circuit shown in Fig 2.2 in Multisim and probe voltage between nodes
B and E, the current Ix through the branch with the inductor. (0.7 Mark)
c) Validate your answer for the voltage and current found in part a with simulation results
in part b. Clearly state whether the values obtained in part a are the same as part b. If
not, explain your answer. (0.1 Mark)

Part 2.3 (2 Marks)
a) Calculate i(t) for t > 0 in the circuit shown in Fig 2.3. Assume the circuit is at steady state
before the switch opens. (0.9 Mark)
b) Simulate the same circuit shown in Fig 2.3 in Multisim. Probe for i(t) and show the
following:
1) i(t) value of the probe on the circuit when the switch is closed
2) i(t) value of the probe on the circuit when the switch is open
3) Screenshot of graph showing i(t) in both steady state and transient conditions
(0.9 Mark)
Recommended simulation steps:
1. Set the simulation type to “Interactive” and select the gear icon in the top right to
open the document pane for the simulation setting. Change the “End time” to 2, and
the “Max time step” to 1e-6.
2. Start with the switch closed and press the play button to start the simulation. Save an
image of the circuit with the value on the probe.
3. When the simulation reaches around 300ms, click on the switch to open it. Notice the
changing value on the probe.
4. Once the simulation has stopped, save an image of the circuit with the new value on
the probe.
5. To see the graph, select the “Grapher” view, then select the gear icon to open the icon
pane for the graph settings. Under the “axes” option, select “Zoom all”. Save an image
of the resulting graph for the values of i(t).

c) Validate your answer in part a with simulation result in part b. Clearly state whether the
values obtained in part a are the same as part b. If not, explain your answer. (0.2 Mark)
