2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The effective management of resources within organizations is a critical element in a
firm's ability to compete. As a manager, one must make decisions in the acquisition and
use of human resources, materials, capital, and technology. These decisions often deal
with the planning, controlling, organizing, or staffing of a firm's operations and involve
multiple sources of information and conflicting goals. The purpose of this course is to
provide you with the knowledge and tools that will help you make those decisions.

This course is an introductory survey course and is designed to provide you with an
understanding of the basic functions of management; and create an awareness of how
the design, operations, and control of production/operations systems that can most
effectively provide goods and services. The course will provide you with basic
managerial principles, tools with which to solve operations problems and knowledge of
current managerial practices and issues.

3. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES


On completion of this course, the students should be able to:
* Knowledge
1. Summarize major challenges of managing in the new competitive landscape;
analyze the drivers of competitive advantage; explain functions of
management; define the skills of an effective manager; summarize the basic
steps in any planning process, summarize the types and choices available for
corporate strategy.
2. Understand the control systems and types of control systems; describe
budgeting and define the basic type of financial statements and financial
ratios.
3. Determine the scope of operations management; analyze the main functions of
organizations; differentiate between design and production/ operations systems;
compare and contrast service and manufacturing operations.
4. Identify the primary ways for business competition; analyze the organization
strategy and operations strategy, quality-based vs. time-based strategies; clarify
and comprehend productivity measures.
5. Explain the importance of product and service design; apply key issues for
product and service design in practice.
6. Explain the importance of capacity planning; discuss the ways of defining and
measuring capacity and major considerations related to developing capacity
alternative; and apply approaches for evaluating capacity alternatives.
7. Explain the strategic importance of process selection; describe the basic layout
types and develop simple process layouts; apply line balancing for designing
product layout.
8. Discuss the objectives of quality management and quality control, comprehend
some tools for quality control.
9. Discuss the objectives of inventory management and inventory review system;
apply A-B-C approach, basic EOQ model, EPQ model, and quantity discount
model to solve typical problems; discuss the JIT model
10. Discuss the benefits and requirements of MRP; apply MRP model to set up a
master production schedule, calculate net requirements, and determine order
released; Understand the principle of MRP II and ERP.
11. Apply and Comprehend Gantt chart, CPM, PERT for planning and scheduling the
project in project management.

12. Understand the nature and benefit of supply chain management.

6. COURSE POLICY:
6.1 Requirements for Examination
Students are allowed to take the final exam only if the following conditions are
satisfied:
- Students must attend at least 80% class periods (12/15 sessions)
- Attendance is also required for all examination/ assignment periods. Students are
expected to pass at least 40% of those examinations. For courses those only requires one
examination, students are expected to earn at least 4 points out of 10.
- For an absence to be excused, the absence must be accompanied by a written
excuse from a doctor or other competent. If a student is absent for more than an allowed
number of sessions for the university’s mission, the instructor then can consider and decide, but
must ensure that no more than 60% of the sessions are taken and additional instruction is
required under the supervision of the instructor.
6.2 Incentive Policy
- Students who contribute in class discussions and are recognized by the teacher
(reward cards) will be credited to the mid-term and/or final scores.
- Students can propose and get the consent of the lecturer to an essay. If the essay is
in good quality, it will be considered to have bonus points for mid-term or final exams.
6.3 Assignment policy
All assignments must be the result of the students own work and effort.
- If 30% similarity is detected; the assignment’s score will be deducted.
- If more than 30% similarity is detected; the assignment will be zero-scored.
- Late submission will result in 10% deducted from assignment score for each day
late.
- Missed work or more than 3 days late submission will be zero-scored.

7.2. Assessment Criteria


* General rules for all written documentations
All works are presented on A4 sized paper, size: 12, font: Times New Roman; margin settings
as follows: top 2.5 cm, bottom 2.5 cm, left 3.5 cm, right 2 cm; spacing 1.5.

1) Group work: Written report 30% of total grade.


Content: Students will form groups around 5 to 6 people. Each group will discuss and
write a report for the assigned case study.

This will be done as part of the class after workshop. This should last only 5 minutes and
all else is TBA (to be announce)

A presentation covering the following points should be prepared:


- Provide a brief introduction to the organization
- Describe the selected topic
- The issues/problem should then be considered and analysed in terms of materials drawn
from topics studied as part of this subject
- Design an intervention (a change program or set of activities and procedures utilizing
some aspects of your analysis. The intervention should be intended to solve or improve
the situation

This team paper is to make an Operations Plan to “fix a production or service unit” of a
business. Each team is to CHOOSE their company which they want to study. During
covid time we recommend you choose a company in which you can glean information on,
online.

The paper is to be 15 to 20 pages with at least 15 references from the theory of this
course, Harvard style with Harvard style references. Writing must be in paragraphs and

- Content: all materials covered in the course
Write a short paper on what you have learned in the course.
Please do not flatter the professor or thank him or else you lose points.

A reflective essay is when you THINK about what you have learned
And what it means to you. Its ok to say “nothing” and its also ok to be critical of the
Course, theory, and its utility.

4) Attendance/Participation 10 percentage Points


This means logging in on time and having your camera on your face. Simple.
