Tutorial Worksheet #2

This document is a tutorial worksheet for an introduction to statistics course. It contains questions about scales of measurement and types of sampling. For the first question, the student identifies the appropriate scale of measurement for various variables such as occupation, income, and number of sexual partners. The second question involves stratified random sampling within academic disciplines. The third question is about cluster sampling, where the airports represent clusters and simple random sampling is used to select 100 airports.

TUTORIAL WORKSHEET # 2

STAB23 - Introduction to Statistics for Social Sciences

Full Name: Shaharin Ahmed

Student Number: 1007584026

1. (6 marks) Which of the scale of measurement is most appropriate for:

(a) Occupation (plumber, teacher, secretary,...)?

Nominal (Categorical form of measurement)

(b) Occupation status (lower class, middle middle, upper class)?

Ordinal (Categorical form of measurement)

(c) Population growth rate (in percentages)?

Interval (Quantitative form of measurement)

(d) Community size (rural, small town, large town, small city, large city)?
Ordinal (Categorical form of measurement)

(e) Annual income (thousands of euros per year)?

Interval (Quantitative form of measurement)

(f) Lifetime number of sexual partners?

Interval (Quantitative form of measurement)

2. (2 marks) You look up the demographics of American college graduates and find that 51% of American

college graduates major in Social Science, 30% are in Biological and/or Physical Sciences, 10% are in
Mathematical Sciences, and 9% identify as other. You are interested in student satisfaction, so you
perform a simple random sampling within each discipline.

(a) Did you perform stratified random sampling or cluster sampling? Explain
The type of sampling I perform from this data is stratified random sampling. This is due to the fact
that I performed simple random sampling within each discipline, and I express each discipline as a
strata. In the percentages are taken from one stratum the next, all in one specific area, without bias.

(b) What advantage might it have other simple random sampling?

The advantage that it has is that there is no bias when it comes to the data of participants, leading to
satisfaction. This advantage also play a role for that data to be studied much further.

3. (2 marks) A researcher is interested in evaluating the earnings of airport staff in the United States (US).
Suppose the US has about 5,200 airports. A decision is made to classify all 5,200 airports as distinct
groups, where the employees of each airport represent a group. You then perform simple random
sampling technique to select 100 airports from your 5,200 groups. The earnings of the employees in those
100 airports will represent the primary data for your study.

(a) Did you perform stratified random sampling or cluster sampling? Explain.
Based on the data, I performed cluster sampling. Since each airport was randomly selected chosen to
satisfy the 5, 200 margin. In addition during the time of the SRS technique, of the 5200 being surveyed,
all the earnings of airport were cherry-picked within each cluster.

(b) What advantage might it have other simple random sampling?

The advantage that it might have other than random sampling is that it is very efficient of getting a
quick result, leading it to be budget- friendly.
