A. Introduction
An entrepreneur is an individual who, as an innovator, has the courage to take risks and face
uncertainties in an attempt to make money and create new opportunities for society. They are innovators,
creators and brave people who can face business problems and increase employment opportunities for
society. We interviewed a successful entrepreneur. She is a 53 years old woman named Ooi Kheng Lan who
has a happy family. She is a businessman, entrepreneur and investor in Malaysia. She has run a boutique
called XING LING Enterprise for 10 years. It was established in 2010 and this shop is located in a small town
called Simpang in Perak. This company is a shop specializing in handmade jewelry, selling handmade jewelry,
92.5 silver jewelry, cartoon character models, etc., in order to promote the tradition of handmade, she decided
to choose this field to start her own business. The characteristic of commercial boutiques is the limited variety
of products. Specialize in providing a limited number of product or service categories, and only sell one type
of product. Compared with large retailers, boutiques usually sell a wider range of products, thus providing
customers with more choices. The target market she focused on when she started her business was
customers of all races, especially women, because this is a boutique mainly selling accessories.
As an entrepreneur, she already has work experience in this field before starting her own business.
This can help her with a lot of training and can collaborate with others. In the process of hiring employees,
she believes that reasonable hiring of employees is very important because it can improve employee
performance and reduce unnecessary expenses. Employees must be proactive, like to learn more, and
cannot be lazy. Influencing her to become an entrepreneur, the biggest motivation for starting a business is
to influence her role model in the growth process. It will inspire her, enable her to do and become better, and
guide you to become a good person. The main motivation is her parents, because her parents also used to
have their own businesses and they have now become role models influencing her. Another important reason
for starting her career is her interests, dreams and family support. Therefore, the reason why it is easy to
influence a person to start a business is not only because of the role models of successful people and family
members, but also one of the important reasons for dreams and family support.
When she wants to start a business, her husband always supports her. When she started running
the business, she established a good relationship with her employees. This relationship can reduce
unnecessary misunderstandings when starting a business together and avoid loss of business profits. This
is also the reason for her success. On the other hand, as entrepreneurs, they often use some promotional
3
strategies to promote their products, such as using online platforms, TV, audio, etc. Of course, she is no
exception. She also uses some promotional strategies to promote her products to the public.
To become a successful entrepreneur, you need to have a wealth of experience. If you are
inexperienced, then the consequence of starting a business is failure, but the size of the failure may be large,
or small it may cause total loss of money and need to bear debt. Therefore, the experience of successful
people is very important. In this interview, she said that if she has the opportunity to do it again, she will
choose to learn from experienced people how to find a suitable store location, and can ensure a good flow
of people and purchasing power for a long time. Therefore, except to having a wealth of experience and
choosing a suitable geographic location, becoming a good entrepreneur also requires many characteristics,
such as risk tolerance, innovation ability, self-confidence, knowing how to use smart devices and more to
maintain our business.

B. Entrepreneur background
Most of the entrepreneurs come from many different backgrounds, some are influenced by family
activities and others are influenced by other role models. The degree of influence of entrepreneurial activities
increases the propensity to start a business. In addition, having entrepreneur parents will also provide a
powerful role model for their children, which is also a source of influence on their children. According to the
data we interviewed, the entrepreneur of XING LING Enterprise is a married 53 years old woman with 3
children and a happy family and her name is Ooi Kheng Lan.
The factors lead Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan create a business is because she is interested in handicrafts,
so she decided to open a shop specializing in handmade accessories, hoping to attract more people to like,
and promote handmade products to let more people know the goodness of handicrafts. The most important
thing before opening a store is to own a store. However, Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan quickly solved this problem. In
the interview, she revealed to us that she and his family lived upstairs in the shop, and the shop downstairs
also belonged to them. Therefore, after having the idea of starting a business, she decided to use the vacant
shop downstairs as a company shop.
After solving the problem of the store, another thing that is most needed before opening a store is to
find a supplier of goods. A supplier is an individual or business that provides products or services to another
entity. The role of the supplier in the enterprise is to provide high-quality products from the manufacturer to
the distributor or retailer for resale at a reasonable price. The supplier in the enterprise is the person who
acts as an intermediary between the manufacturer and the retailer to ensure the upcoming exchange and
sufficient quality inventory. They are very important to every entrepreneur. This is in addition to getting
reasonable prices and high-quality products, but also because they need to buy more raw materials from
suppliers to help them increase production. In order to find more raw materials and get more good choices,
many companies must work closely with suppliers to make the most of their products.
In the interview, we also asked Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan how to solve the problem about the supplier. Did
she find someone she knew or introduced to her? She told us that her husband helped her solve this problem.
She said that her husband is a wholesale salesman about the handmade goods and jewelry. He knows many
suppliers in this industry. Therefore, when she decided to start a business, her husband helped her find some
wholesale jewelry and handmade raw materials suppliers to provide products and raw materials for her newly
opened boutique shop.
5
From this interview, we also learned that the most important thing before starting a business is to
find some resources, such as product suppliers and stores. Therefore, when you want to start a business,
you can get to know some friends who have achieved success in business, and ask them how to find these
resources and learn some knowledge about successful companies when you started your business, and find
ways to increase the success rate of your business.
6
C. Company background
The company background is referring to which line the company is in, how large the company is,
what is the scope of business, what are the cooperation with other companies and the government, and other
relationships, and the departments, groups, and products involved in the company are based on market. The
company background is basically an overview and introduction of a company.
The name of the company we interviewed is XING LING Enterprise, which was established in 2010.
The XING LING Enterprise is a boutique shop, selling handmade accessories, 92.5 silver jewelry, anime
character models and more. Handmade accessories such as teacher's day bouquets, pendants, jewelry,
accessories, and etc. The boutique shop is actually a special type of retail store. Its scale, scope and
inventory are limited, so this is different from other retail businesses. When running a retail business, it is
important to understand the different attributes and the relative advantages and disadvantages. A retail store
is a commercial enterprise or business enterprise, and their main source of sales is from retail. Retail is all
activities in which goods or services are sold directly to final consumers for personal and non-commercial
use. One of the most obvious differences between traditional retail stores and boutique stores is the actual
size of the store. Compared with large retailers or commodity retailers, boutiques are relatively small.
Boutiques usually occupy a small space in closed shopping malls or open plazas. They are rarely
independent operations. In contrast, larger retail chains have greater flexibility in location and have more
sales space. Small business boutiques are characterized by a limited variety of products. Variety is the
number of product categories sold. Many general merchandise retailers have a wide variety. Boutiques
specialize in a limited number of product or service categories, and they only sell one type of product.
Compared with larger retailers, boutiques usually do sell a product richer, which gives customers more
choices.
The store we visited is located in a town called Simpang in Larut, Matang and Selama District in the
northwestern part of Perak State. Simpang is a traditional new village established in 1952. The size of the
shop is not large, it is similar to the shop in the mall, because it is a small boutique. On the right-hand side of
this shop is a petrol station named BH Petrol. The store installed LED panels at the entrance of the store.
The shop is a two-story townhouse, but only the downstairs is used as a shop.
Target customers are the types of people to whom the company wants to sell products or services.
Target customers are the front end of marketing work. Only when a certain type of target customer in the
consumer group is determined, can effective and targeted marketing activities be carried out. The target
7
customers of this boutique are all ethnicity, especially women, because this is a boutique mainly for
accessories. But the store said that most of their customers are Malays and Chinese who come to buy the
goods. In 2010, the percentage of Malays or Bumiputera in the Larut, Matang and Selama District ethnic
groups was 60.72%, and the second ethnic group was Chinese with 25.5%. Furthermore, most Chinese
prefer handmade accessories such as pendants and anime character models, while Malays prefer to buy
92.5 silver jewelry and handmade pin accessories to fix their headscarves.
Running a business well is not easy, it should be said that it is very difficult, no matter who it is. At
present, most businesses in the world are fiercely competitive, but if a business is quick to make money and
is easy to do, it will soon be participated by competitors and it will be difficult to make money and not easy to
do. This is one of the problems faced by entrepreneurs. Moreover, most companies are constantly
transforming, upgrading, and innovating. Basically, no successful company is still what it was originally. But
those companies that cannot keep up with the development of the times, then these companies will not be
able to survive in the competition, and the final result waiting for them is they will be eliminated. Those
businesses or companies that have become successful cases are only a small part, but as many as 99% of
the companies have a dismal outcome. From the interview, we know that the way the entrepreneur runs
this boutique is to give her staff training. The training is about how to make these handmade accessories and
those skills. In addition, she will personally impart knowledge about handmade and her own experience. This
is to let the quality of the handmade accessories made by the employees have a standard level. Because
the handmade accessories that are not up to the standard level not only cannot be sold but also waste
materials, then she needs to spend more money to buy materials again. On the contrary, handmade
accessories that meet the standard can be successfully sold or wholesaled to other sellers.
An employee is an individual hired by an employer to perform a specific job. After the application and
interview process, when an employee passes the interview, he will be selected as an employee hired by the
employer. This choice is made after the employer finds that the applicant is most qualified for the job they
are doing and has performed well in the interview. Employees are divided into part-time, full-time or is
temporary in a job assignment. Employees barter their skills, knowledge, experience and contributions in
exchange with employers in order to obtain remuneration from employers such as wages or salaries.
Employees can be exempted from overtime pay or not exempted from overtime pay. The rules for paying
employees are governed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). In the interview, the entrepreneur said that
she only hired one employee to help her run the store together. This is because the area of this boutique
8
shop is not large and the workload is not much, so it does not require too much manpower. Excessive
manpower will lead to poor performance of employees and lack of performance at work. Employees will
become more and more lazy, do not work well, and do things irrelevant to work during working hours.
Appropriate hiring of employees is very important, because it not only improves employee performance, but
also reduces unnecessary expenses.
9
D. The entrepreneur before starting the venture
When every entrepreneur starts to create a business, he will have his own job before that. According
to our interview, Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan's work experience before starting her own business was that she worked
as a sewing worker for a while when she was 17 years old. After that, she switched to doing handmade
jewelry work because she liked handicrafts.
The biggest motivation for entrepreneurs to start a business is to influence their role models in the
growth process. Establishing a business role model is an important part of entrepreneurship. He will inspire
you so that you can do it and become better. Looking up to business role models will make you dream bigger
and achieve greater success. I think most people who are easy to be role models come from some excellent
and successful business guides. In addition to these successful entrepreneurs, parents with entrepreneurs
will also become the best role models for their children. There are many forms of business role models. The
only important thing is that they will make the most of your interests through lifestyle and work. In order to
understand that who are the role model influencing her create business, we asked whether Ms. Ooi Kheng
Lan’s decision to start a business was influenced by her favorite role model. She told us that she plans to
start a business did not because she was influenced by any role model. The reason for her business is simply
because of her interests, hobbies and support from her family.
When we knew if she had a role model, we also asked Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan about her parents'
information through interviews, and wanted to know more about her family status and whether her
entrepreneurship without an entrepreneurial role model was affected by her parents. She told us that her
parents are still alive but have retired. When her parents were young, they ran their own business as a buffet,
her mother was responsible for cooking, and her father was responsible for delivering food to customers’
homes. From this interview, we learned that the reason why she started her own business may also be
influenced by her parents, because her parents used to run their own business when they were young, even
though it was only a small business.
Through this interview, we learned that part of the reason why Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan put forward her
entrepreneurial idea may be influenced by her parents, and partly due to the opinions and support of her
family. This is because after asking about her parents, we also asked Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan at what age she
intends to become an entrepreneur. She told us that she had been working as a part-time worker before
starting her own business, doing some handicraft work. She started to have this idea because of the advice
given by her child, because her child saw that she liked handicrafts so much, she suggested why she has
10
the ability to not open a shop on her own. After hearing the child’s opinion, she thinks it’s a good idea. So,
she decided to implement this idea after a year of discussion with her family, and after getting their consent
and support. Therefore, in 2009, when she was 41 years old, she used the vacant shop downstairs as a place
to start her own business. After registering and renovating the store in 2009, it opened in 2010. Therefore, at
42 years old in 2010, she became an entrepreneur.
After understanding her age and reasons for deciding to start a business, we asked her through the
interview about Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan’s education and whether she has entrepreneurial knowledge to
successfully start her own business. She told us that her studies continued until Form Three. When she was
a child, she was a middle family with many siblings. Although her parents do business on their own, their
income is not enough because they have many brothers and sisters. Therefore, as the eldest of the family,
she also dropped out of school early to work and help the family. After having the idea of entrepreneurship,
she began to train and learn entrepreneurship. With the help of the salesman's husband, she has what she
is today.
Many companies will hold some entrepreneurial activities before opening to attract customers. For
example, there are discounts 3 days before opening, or some small gifts will be given when purchasing some
goods in the store 3 days before opening. Therefore, after asking about the reasons for starting a business
and education background, we also asked in the interview whether Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan used and organized
any entrepreneurial activities to attract more customers and let more people know and understand her store.
She told us that there was a buy 2 get 1 free event 3 days before the opening, in order to attract more new
customers. In addition, during some important festivals such as Teacher’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day
and other special days, some entrepreneurial activities were organized to launch customizable handmade
bouquets and handmade gifts to attract more customers to buy.
Through the above interview, we learned that Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan only started her business when
she was in her 40s. Her career started only because of her interests, dreams and the support of her family,
not because of the influence of any role models. Therefore, the reason why it is easy to influence a person
to start a business is not only because of the role models of successful people and family members but
dreams and family support also one of the important reasons. In addition, through Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan’s
entrepreneurial experience in this interview, we also learned that if you want to start a business, you must
first have an entrepreneurial spirit. Even if you encounter any challenges, you must never give up. You need
to make all the plans before starting the business. Even if you encounter any challenges, you must never
11
give up. You need to make all the plans before starting the business. Any successful entrepreneur will not
give up the idea of starting a business because of age or education. For example, the founder of the well-
known fast food restaurant brand KFC, actually succeeded in creating the KFC brand at the age of 88.
Furthermore, another example is that a successful entrepreneur is our interviewer, Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan, who
will not give up starting a business due to her old age and low educational background. Before starting her
own business, she will not give up because of she has no entrepreneurial knowledge. Instead, she went for
training to learn more knowledge about entrepreneurship.
12
E. The Entrepreneur at The Time He /She Started the Venture
What an entrepreneur does when she wants to start his business especially getting motivational
support from people will give us enthusiasm. For this entrepreneur, it was her husband who pushed her to
start her business. her husband is also a sales man. to a certain extent her husband was also able to provide
support to his wife, an entrepreneur, to open a business. In addition, her husband also once advised that if
anything happened to her husband such as an accident and her husband died, her business would be a
source of family income especially to their children. For example, to buy necessities to get on with life and
also to pay for their children’s education fees. her husband to this entrepreneur did not want the family to get
in trouble if something happened to him. Other than that, when she wanted to open his business, she had no
goal. This is because for her with the support of family members especially her husband she will work hard
to achieve success in her business.
Next, the kind of trust this entrepreneur has when she wants to start his business is like having an
honest employee. This is because she does not want to take on an employee who has given up trust and is
not being honest with the employer while working as this attitude will give her a burden like incurring losses.
other than that, she wants an employee who is punctual in doing the job. For example, do not be late to work
because if this attitude is present in an employee will make it difficult to continue the business. If she has a
partner who wants to be involved in her business, she wants a partner who has an attitude of integrity and
also does not cheat her own partner because she wants to make a lot of profit. Therefore, if she wants to find
a partner, she should find a partner who does not burden her and does not give huge losses to her business
because it is not easy to do business.
When you want to start a business, you must have the resources or capital to pay for store rent, store
necessities and also the items you want to sell. For him, his capital when he wants to open his business is
from his own money or his own savings to open his business. For him, if we already have ambitions to do
business, we must sacrifice by saving our own money and not overly expect the contributions of others. This
is because, we ourselves who want to run a business are not forced from others. Therefore, we must work
hard to raise capital before wanting to do business. She also wanted to prove to outsiders that even though
she was a woman she could find her own capital to do business. This is because many people think, if a
woman wants to open a business they must ask for or borrow capital from others for example family members,
friends and make loans. But this assumption is completely wrong for these entrepreneurs. She was trying to
find her own capital to open her business. Moreover, even though she has a husband, she does not want to
13
ask her husband because she does not want to add a burden to her husband to help her raise capital to
pursue her ambition to open a business.
In addition, if we want to start a business there must be a promotional or marketing strategy to tell
people about the products we sell. In this age of luxury, there are various ways that every entrepreneur can
do to promote their products. For example, promote by using an online platform or by handing out face -to -
face sheets of paper to the community. but to speed up the time, almost all entrepreneurs in Malaysia and in
the world use promotion on online platforms like social media like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Tiktok.
using this social media as a way to promote it will more quickly tell people about the product we want to sell.
Moreover, with this world of luxury, consumers also have various ways to buy the goods or products
they want. the first way is to go to a store that has its own goods and the second way is by making purchases
of goods online only. various applications are made to make online purchases such as Shopee and even
Lazada. in addition, users can also purchase goods or products by browsing the website provided by the
operator.
For this entrepreneur, she dared to do a promotion for users to buy his goods by doing it directly on
Facebook. in this way it can also attract consumers to buy products or goods. In addition to doing live
broadcasts on Facebook, many entrepreneurs also try to give live presentations on Shopee, Instagram and
also Tiktok. now various ways are available for us to promote our goods to consumers other than consumers
who have to waste time to come to our store. In the same way also, he does not focus on one method of
making customers buy his goods. To some extent this method will also help him get huge profits while running
his business because that is what every entrepreneur dream of if they are involved in this business activity.
Every entrepreneur should also have a strategy to market their products or goods to consumers. With this
method also the user can find out what the entrepreneur is working on, how the product or item works, the
advantages of using the product and most importantly the price offered by the entrepreneur on the product
or item to the consumer. These basic things should be emphasized by every entrepreneur so as not to be
overlooked when wanting to run a business because these things can also affect the business by an
entrepreneur.
With this online method, entrepreneurs can also find out the reaction or reaction from consumers
after using their products. If the product or item they market has satisfied the consumer, that is a very good
response and the response desired by every entrepreneur will remain there if the product or item does not
satisfy the consumer, the entrepreneur must correct their mistakes as every response from the consumer
14
must should be taken into account because for the good of our own business, we continue to be successful
in running the business.
For the initial stage to engage in this business activity every entrepreneur must be questioned with
their question whether this is serious or not to run this business. This is because many people think that as
long as an entrepreneur is not successful and does not make huge profits from his business, they consider
this just a joke to do business. This assumption cannot be used. For this entrepreneur, she is indeed serious
about running this business. Although the results were a bit slow when she wanted to open a business, she
worked hard because when she started his business, she did it while learning new things to improve her
business. This kind of attitude that we want by every entrepreneur because it is not easy to give up in every
failure or hardship they face. Not every business will continue to thrive from the beginning to the past. This
is because, when a person has ventured into this field of business, they definitely experience fluctuations
when starting a business. Not all businesses are given profits alone, they must also face losses no matter in
small or large amounts. Therefore, an entrepreneur must have the same knowledge as this entrepreneur,
when she runs his business while studying, she will have a lot of knowledge about the field of business. The
more she learns, the more she can fix things that need to change in her own business. Therefore, this way
is one of the ways for an entrepreneur to continue to successfully achieve his ambitions in the field of business.
Moreover, when a person is involved in a field of business, they also have to face risks when starting
a business. For this entrepreneur, she is not afraid of the risks that arise. For him risks such as loss or the
like will be faced by an entrepreneur. She continued his business by selling his goods. She is also not greedy
when venturing into this field of business. Such a negative attitude will have an impact or adverse effect on
the business. An entrepreneur should avoid having a negative attitude like this if he wants to succeed in his
business. The attitude that an entrepreneur should have is not easy to give up, responsible in every problem
faced and many more that involve a positive attitude to be instilled in an entrepreneur because this positive
attitude is also one of the ways for us to succeed in business.
In every area of business, entrepreneurs must have a plan so that the business can run smoothly.
for him the planning was important. When there is a plan, we do it step by step to start our business. For
example, the planning that needs to be done is to find a location or shop to start a business, set the required
capital. For this entrepreneur, she takes 6 years to start her business. This is because planning to open a
business does not require a short time. If an entrepreneur plans a business in a short period of time, the
entrepreneur does not seem ready to open the business and the entrepreneur takes a high risk if he behaves
15
in such a way. It is not wrong to take a long time to plan to open a business. This is because she can also
make capital savings to start a business. Since she did not want to depend on anyone to give her capital,
she had to work by saving his own money for a long time to open a business. Therefore, doing planning
before running a business is very important so that we can arrange the best strategy to start a business.
Moreover, when wanting to start a business, she sacrifices a lot to open his shop or business. while
starting the business, she worked from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. In this direction because she worked hard to sell
goods in his shop. She doesn’t want to be easily discouraged or lazy while trying to start his business. If an
entrepreneur has such an attitude surely his business will not last long. For him, though tired of working from
morning to night. She will still try to open the store so that customers can go to her store to buy the items
sold in his store. If she opens the store in a short time, the customer cannot buy the goods in the store but
with the support of family members, especially her husband, she can work in a long time. Every entrepreneur
must sacrifice time and energy early in the start-up while opening a business. This is because various things
need to be done and also improved to attract customers and profit to the business.
16
F. The entrepreneur as she/he grew the venture
What an entrepreneur needs to do while running a business is to set goals and values in themselves
to succeed in business by trying to be the best of the existing competitors. Entrepreneurial goals and values
are things that have been highly emphasized since starting this business. For this entrepreneur, Ms. Ooi
Kheng Lan, she has made plans to transform the industrial business. This is because this business does not
yet have many competitors. This will give her a lucrative profit. In general, a goal is a broad and
comprehensive purpose. For example, "Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan wants to achieve 50% market share in two years,"
or, "she wants to compete and complete a triathlon in 18 months." That doesn’t determine how she will
achieve this market share; it does not describe a strategy for going there or offer the specific tasks needed
to achieve that strategy. Just a goal or goal is enough. Whereas, value is one’s idea of things the most
important for entrepreneurs in their lives like the things they want to live and go through. With this value, it
can guide many actions and decisions that entrepreneurs make. The entrepreneur’s vision is the beginning
of a path that will determine where she wants to go with their entrepreneurial venture. This vision plans what
entrepreneurs want to do in the future which may be five or ten years from now. Unfortunately, many would
-be entrepreneurs have dreams and ideas but never have develop a concrete vision. A vision statement is a
picture you have for the efforts that will be made in the future and what will grow. However, keep in mind that
the vision identified at the beginning of the venture will turn into something different in the coming days. A
mission statement is a formal statement of what an effort will do, what value it will provide to the end customer,
and how it will implement this action. In describing the mission of an entrepreneur, think carefully about the
value proposition it provides. A value proposition is a summary statement that conveys the benefits of a
unique product, service, or process or business model to customers. It has to do with the problem-solving
perspective. An entrepreneur should not only solve problem, but they should also provide value. They may
solve the problem, but if the value proposition is irrelevant or seen as "real" by the customer, the effort may
not be successful. Both the concept of the future vision and the mission of the business must be formalized
into reality.
Nowadays, social media plays very important role in doing something. Websites also have a huge
impact on business. Without the existence of a website will cause the business does not grow widely. Among
the benefits of having a website are able to provide business and product information to customers widely.
Among the types of websites that are often used are business information websites and company profiles.
This type of website is ideal for introducing companies and products to consumers with better and accurate
17
presentation of information without the element of fraud. For example, entrepreneurs use text, video, links to
social sites and so on. The website can also facilitate order and payment management systems for merchant
businesses. An entrepreneur does not have to bother to calculate sales, review payments and the system
can display daily or monthly reports or annual business of the dealer. Such a website can put reliability and
facilitate customer access to the merchant easily and quickly. Further, the site is also able to attract new
prospects through the integration of email marketing, FB Pixel, and various other techniques. Through the
website, entrepreneurs can integrate other appropriate systems to get new prospects and customers to get
the product. Among them is through FB Pixel where an entrepreneur can 'haunt' prospects who browse the
website and 'feed' customers with ads on Facebook to entice them to buy the product. For Ms. Ooi Kheng
Lan's business is at risk because she does not have a website to promote and introduce her products on a
large scale to customers. This resulted in her business not growing widely due to his limited clientele. So, if
she wants to expand her marketing, she should be active on social sites so that his business expands without
having borders. This will give her a lucrative profit.
With the change as the venture grew, Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan has opening the boutique store from 9 am
to 6 pm every day. This is a daily routine that she does every day. At 7.30am, she moved to the boutique
store to monitor and pack the items that needed to be packed. If her husband is holiday, her husband will
help her with business. This will lighten some of the burden. Each day of her business will take place for 9
hours only. In the area, she doesn’t have many competitors because her shop is located in a rural area.
Customers who want to find a product or service, they can get in her store because she provides various
facilities. The location is also strategic. This can make it easier for customers to park their vehicles to get into
her boutique store.
Before starting the business, she had made the assumption that her business would run smoothly
and not suffer any losses. But what happened was the opposite. She had suffered huge losses early on in
running the business. This is because the products and services provided by it are not a necessity in the
daily life of the customer. But she did not give up and had a strong desire to continue the business regardless
of the words of others. She has a strong interest in business. Others have stated that his business will not
last long because, maybe one to two years will go bankrupt but until now it has opened around 10 years. Her
husband also gave her a lot of encouragement to face the failures she faced. In the end, she has succeeded
and is now a successful entrepreneur and a role model to today's young people. Ultimately, in order to
18
achieve success, we must not be afraid to go through failure because from failure we can learn to be a
successful person brilliantly.
Ms. Ooi Kheng Lan had some critical points in the expansion of the effort when the effort almost
failed. The most serious consequence her suffered was the closure of the store. The main thing is to predict
what the problem is in advance. The problem may be the price or quality of the goods. When a problem is
known she can be resolved immediately at a critical time to resolve the most serious consequences so that
it will not happen.
Next, entrepreneurs also never run away from making mistakes. The main mistake made by Ms. Ooi
Kheng Lan throughout his journey of becoming an entrepreneur is that she never planned to open E-
Commerce. This has caused her to cut off his source of income because during the 0.1 MCO, the economic
sector had to close due to the sudden outbreak of covid 19. This will cause her to suffer losses. But if he has
E-Commerce, it will benefit her as many customers are shopping online at that time.
E-commerce is a business system that uses information technology facilities, especially advanced
telecommunications and Internet lines to deal with customers. It is a business activity using the Internet as a
marketing instrument with potential sales reach to all over the world without geographical boundaries. E-
commerce is one of the profitable business methods if done in the right way. Although stock and commodity
markets are declining, e-commerce is still able to survive and receive high transactions. Among the e-
commerce companies that have been successful and become pioneers in Malaysia are Shopee, Mudah,
Lazada, Fingo and so on. This indicates that the exposure of Internet technology advances in Malaysia in
particular and around the world in general is becoming more widespread and gaining global human attention.
E-commerce uses the Internet as a medium to create a network that unites customers, sellers and
third parties such as banks, finance companies, credit card companies and so on in one secure electronic
form for all parties. The Internet was originally designed to be an environment accommodating the free flow
of communication. With the advent of e-commerce, a company or individual can conduct buying and selling
transactions anywhere in the world. It is widely used, practiced in Western countries, and even recognized
by international companies and market experts as a business and marketing sector.
E-commerce has many benefits to merchants. Among others, it can eliminate or reduce the cost of
renting a warehouse or business premises, insurance, rental of control services and other costs associated
with storage costs in the transaction of transfer of goods or services. Merchants can communicate directly
19
with consumers, not only get feedback directly without involving third parties but also quickly and directly
(online). If in the past the scope of product marketing was limited to the surrounding area only, but through
e-commerce, the opportunity to advertise and market goods or services more widely without borders can be
done. Moreover, the results can be seen quickly.
For merchants, e-commerce can increase sales and reduce production costs as well as be able to
identify new suppliers and business partners as well as be able to interact directly with consumers. However,
consumers should also be careful as there are some risks that they will face. More systematic preparation is
necessary if this e-commerce concept is to be implemented.
In conclusion, these online transactions have their own negative and positive effects. However, if
utilized properly, this transaction can bring the country's products and image to the international stage and
be able to compete in the world economy without borders.

G. The entrepreneur today and tomorrow
It is well known that entrepreneurship is a profession with a very high failure rate. There are countless
people around the world who start their own businesses every day, yet very few businesses can survive for
several years, and only a few can be described as successful. The overwhelming reason is the lack of
experience, entrepreneurship is not like a competition, the game lost can be compared again, can learn from
the failure of experience to start again. The consequences of business failure can be large or small, a little
better, falling into a penniless, a little worse may be engaged in a total loss of money, but also a lot of debt.
So, this time the experience of successful people is very important, because we do not have many
opportunities.
A good question, starting over, what would you do. It's like getting married, for most people it's a
once in a lifetime experience and it can be scary and intimidating. They will want to get some advice from
their elders, dad, mom or someone with experience. Because if they fail, decades of their lives feel wasted,
and starting a business can feel the same way. The entrepreneur said that if she had to do it all over again,
she would pick a place with a good location to open a business. The seemingly abbreviated answer
represents a very important discipline in entrepreneurship. What is a good location? For starting a business,
there are so many factors to consider. Starting a business is not a gamble, and we can't always feel that we
will be lucky enough to pick a good place. Because there are too many things that will cost us luck on the
way to start a business.
In the case of a lone entrepreneur with a sum of money, his ability is very limited, but the basic
population density of an area, the flow of people and the purchasing power of customers still need to be
considered. For example, how many competitors there are in an area, where the terrain will cause people to
gather, whether the nearby stores will help attract or reduce traffic, whether the rent of the chosen store is
reasonable, and whether local customs will have an impact on your business. All of these will directly affect
whether a location is a good location. And when they need to open a branch or even a branch office, they
also need to choose a suitable location. But they usually do not make the choice blindly by themselves, but
set up a special team or even outsource this important task to other companies.
Next, the entrepreneur feels that treating customers with honesty and finding a wholesaler who treats
each other with honesty is an important key to success for an entrepreneur. And working within one's means
and not being greedy is an important trait that this entrepreneur feels is needed for a successful entrepreneur.
21
This may seem a little vague, but when you understand and read her thesis, you will see that this is actually
the soul of every business. Vision and Mission.
Mission, you may think that the mission of a business is not to make money? If a company doesn't
make money, it is just like a social institution in general. But the mission is not so simple, making money is
certainly important to the enterprise, but this can only be considered the most basic conditions of a business.
Besides making money, what else can we get? The mission represents the original intention of a company.
As an example, a business that sells coffee can have the mission of getting everyone to drink coffee.
Remembering the mission of your business, and always fulfilling the mission of your business no matter when
you are dealing with customers or wholesalers, I think this is the sincerity of it.
The vision, of course, is not just a vision, but also the goal of the company. When does a company
need to achieve something? When establishing goals and visions, many times these things are still only
written on paper. Because of this, we are likely to overestimate ourselves and set goals for ourselves that
are impossible to achieve. It's good to have ambitious goals, but it's greedy to try to reach some unrealistic
goals without considering your own abilities at all. And overly greedy goals will only drag down the activities
of the whole business, or even screw up a business.
Next, the entrepreneur expressed his plans for the future as far as joint ventures are concerned. And
the first plan was the intention to wholesale a batch of cheap goods in, and at the same time the quality of
that batch had to be good. A seemingly simple and sensible statement, itself full of conventional reasoning
contradictions. Everyone knows that the more expensive something is, the better the quality usually is, and
the cheaper something is, the worse the quality is. But this is only conventional thinking, the responsibility of
entrepreneurs is to break the conventional thinking, out of their own way. Cheap has good goods, but all
entrepreneurs, dream to have, but this contains many factors. As said before, you can't always expect good
luck to come to you. There are too many things that will cost you good luck on the way to start a business.
Price and quality certainly present a positive relationship, but it also contains many controllable factors, such
as transportation costs, storage costs, discounts enjoyed when buying goods, etc. can be considered
controlled. And these costs are often dependent on the ability of the entrepreneur, you can also say, in fact,
do not necessarily have to ability, some people are born lucky, random selection can choose the best, random
talks can be negotiated into the most favorable prices. But as the saying goes, luck is also part of strength,
but it is often also the most uncontrollable part of that.
22
The entrepreneur's second plan is to move towards e-commerce and open up sales in this area.
Such an answer represents the sensitivity of an entrepreneur to future trends. E-commerce represents the
current trend of sales, some people may think I am doing a good business, why do I need to transform. But
the market competition is very cruel, many times not because you do what and cause business failure, but
because you do not do anything. Just like the year of NOKIA, obviously the world's most mainstream cell
phone brand, but why the market share can fall in a few years in the altar. Everyone needs to say that NOKIA
did not do anything wrong, it is as always high-quality products, high-quality service, it is not wrong, just that
the world does not need it anymore. So often, entrepreneurs need to be sensitive to the market, or even the
world, any big or small things, because very often it is because you lack of attention to the market than others
and lead to the failure of business.
The third frame of the plan is to train a successor. Training a successor represents the helplessness
that arises from an entrepreneur being a human being, that is, the human life is limited as far as it is concerned.
Every entrepreneur of course wants to run the business he created by himself forever, but the cruelty of
reality makes entrepreneurs have to find a way out. The best way to keep their business alive without losing
the original spirit is to personally train a successor.
The entrepreneur then expresses his plans regarding the exit strategy. The cruelty of the market
makes every entrepreneur have to prepare their own back way at any time, you may think this is too timid,
but no one wants to lose their family because of a failed experience. So, this entrepreneur's strategy was
very decisive, closing the store and renting it to someone else.
The entrepreneur then also offered valuable advice from her own experience for future students who
plan to start their own businesses. She advised future entrepreneurs that if they plan to start a business, they
must find a business they are familiar with, they must first gain relevant experience, they need to do
everything themselves, they need to rely on themselves, and they need to understand all the ways of running
a business. And never rely too much on employees, if some important projects rely too much on employees
but will make employees stomp on the nose, think they can also manage the business, not only immediately
resign, and later may become their own competitors.
These are the heartfelt words of the entrepreneur to the young entrepreneurs of the future. In short,
entrepreneurship may seem different from many things because it is too risky. But after understanding it, it
23
feels the same as many things, because any decision it makes can change a person's life, and there are too
many things like that. Entrepreneurship is a dream for many people, but also because it is a dream, from
time to time there are many unrealistic ideas and therefore many problems. Facing problems, a responsible
entrepreneur should not run away or choose to ignore them, but should accept them, face them and then
solve them.
24
H. Conclusion (What can you learn from this entrepreneur?)
In conclusion, for this interview, we have learned a lot of business knowledge from Ms. Ooi Kheng
Lan. She uses her creativity, accumulation idea, brave, work hard, leadership, innovative to make sure the
fluent operation of her business. As an entrepreneur, she creates a business is because she is interested in
handicrafts. To achieve her dreams, she works hard to learn step by step. She uses her creative and
accumulation of ideas to produce difference products. She worked as a sewing worker for a while when she
was 17 years old. After that, she switched to doing handmade jewelry work because she liked handicrafts.
She takes her existing ideas and always make an improvement on the business and they product and she
will always alert the plan and progress of the business to reduce the mistake happen. This let us learn as an
entrepreneur we must creative and always alert with the progressing of the business, to make sure all the
store, equipment, finance, payment is all right and follow the rules and the unique of the product.
Therefore, as an entrepreneur she also responds with opportunity. When she starts her business her
business, she had seized the opportunity. She had used promotional or marketing strategy to tell people
about the products they sell. For example, promote by using an online platform or by handing out face -to -
face sheets of paper to the community. But to speed up the time, almost all entrepreneurs in Malaysia and in
the world use promotion on online platforms like social media like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Tiktok.
By using this social media as a way to promote it will more quickly tell people about the product we want to
sell. She had dared to do a promotion for users to buy his goods by doing it directly on Facebook. In addition,
to do the live broadcasts on Facebook, many entrepreneurs also try to give live presentations on Shopee,
Instagram and also Tiktok. In this way, by using this all platform, this may increase they reputation of their
business to catch the customers heart directly. In this issue, we have learned some strategy to increase our
skill of seize the new opportunity. We must follow the step of technology in society, to make sure that the
efficiency of the strategy marketing that we have used to avoid the risk will meet in future.
Besides that, as an entrepreneur, she tolerance for risk. She tolerance for risk, to use her own money
and her own savings to open her business and she also must tolerance for the risk to use her business capital
to pay for store rent, store necessities and also the items you want to sell. For him if we already have
ambitions to do business, she must sacrifice by saving our own money and not overly expect the contributions
of others. This is because, she wants to run a business are not forced from others. Therefore, she must work
hard to raise capital before wanting to do business. she also wanted to prove to outsiders that even though
she was a woman she could find her own capital to do business. This is because many people think, if a
25
woman wants to open a business they must ask for or borrow capital from others for example family members,
friends and make loans. But this assumption is completely wrong for these entrepreneurs. She tries to find
his own capital to open his business. In this issue, we have learned, how we calculated the risk that we will
hold, we need to try to reduce or avoid ourself from the risk. Besides that, we need to use intelligence to plan
and manage our money properly, plan the budget that we can spend on our business, to reducing the rate of
waste money and resources.
Hence, what are the key of success factor of the business? She had said the key that will leading us
to success is you need to have long-term vision, must always alert with condition or situation of the market.
If the situation market was bed, that’s mean we need to avoid the risk, influence the business. This may be
important to the new entrepreneur. Therefore, she had said as an entrepreneur you must tolerance for the
risk, do not afraid with obstruction that blocked you, you must brave to solve it and accept the risk that have
occur on your business. In addition, as an entrepreneur don’t always feel anxiety. This may lead received
wrong information and easy misunderstanding with the information. Lastly, become an entrepreneur you
must always alert with the change of environment, to make sure we are always in the right market and follow
the rules.
