Genitive
Genitive
Singular possessives: Add an apostrophe (’) and the letter “s” to the owner of the object.
Ex.: My father’s car is blue.
It is also used to express a relationship between people.
Ex. Peter’s brother is a lawyer.
Plural possessives: If the owners are more than one person and the name ends with the letter “s”
just add an apostrophe (’).
Ex.: The Jacksons’ daughter studies with me.
In the case of irregular plurals, which don’t end with “s” you add the
apostrophe and the “s” (’s) as in singular.
Ex.: The children’s toys are in the living room.
Grammar hints:
1. The owner always goes first.
2. The objects can be one or more and the possessive doesn’t change.
Ex.: The Smiths’ son is a doctor – The Smiths’ daughters are teachers.
3. If there are two owners of the same object you only add the genitive to the last one.
Ex.: Albert and Harry’s car is a new ford.
4. This genitive is only for people or animated things like animals or cartoons. The objects use
the Norman genitive not the Anglo-Saxon.
Ex.: The door of this classroom is closed now. (Correct)
The classroom’s door is closed now. (Incorrect)
