Different students have different learning styles and preferences. Some students like
to learn through imagery; others learn best through hands-on activities. The most
effective college professors are able to successfully address a great many learning
styles through several different types of student-centered activities. But in order to
achieve academic success, most students need more than just a great professor.
Namely, they need to become aware of their unique learning preferences when
studying at home and employ a number of study techniques that are well aligned with
those preferences.

Visual Learners

If you learn best through what you see, you're probably a visual learner. Visual
learners find information presented visually to be the most helpful. They also like
order and pay a lot of attention to the appearance of their surroundings. If their work
environment is chaotic, they have problems concentrating on their work. Additionally,
most visual learners find it difficult to study when noise, such as music or
conversation, is present. If you're a visual learner, try to take notes and highlight any
information you find important and use tables and plenty of other visuals to support
your studying. You may also want to try to create diagrams to better understand new
concepts and to remember important events.

Auditory Learners

If you retain information best through what you hear, chances are you're an auditory
learner. While visual learners prefer to read a book, auditory learners prefer to listen
to an audio book. Auditory learners remember most of what their professor said in
class, but may not be able to summarize what they have read in a textbook. They also
enjoy conversing with others and learn through participating in discussions and
debates. If you're an auditory learner, try to utilize several listening techniques,
auditory media and music when you're studying. For instance, replacing the lyrics of
a song with information you're trying to memorize can be a highly effective study
method for some auditory learners.

Kinesthetic Learners

If you prefer to learn through doing and experiencing things, you may be a kinesthetic
learner. Kinesthetic learners need lots of hands-on interaction. They tend to get
frustrated when sitting in class for a long time. Kinesthetic learners like to move and
need a lot of space. They like to participate in projects, games, discussions, and other
activities. If you're a kinesthetic learner, you should take frequent stretch breaks
during a study session. Also, try to integrate both touch and interaction when
studying at home. For instance, if you're learning about different types of rocks and
minerals, read your notes first and then spend a little time outdoors looking for and
examining different types of rocks.
