SGCL 2020

The document provides the solution to designing an irrigation channel given a discharge of 11270 cusec and bed material size of 0.014 cm using Lacey's theory. The solution calculates the height, width, bed slope, and other parameters of the trapezoidal channel. It determines the height is 4.11 m, width is 75.66 m, and bed slope is 1 in 17453.

Q. Design an irrigation channel to carry a discharge of 11270 cusec.

The bed material size is

0.014 cm. Use Lacey’s theory for design. Assume reasonable value for missing data.
[SGCL-20]

Solution:
Where, Q = 11270 cusec = 11270/35.3 = 319.26 cumec
dmm = 0.014 cm = 0.14 mm
We know,
f = 1.76 d = 1.76 √0.14 = 0.66
. .
V=[ ]1/6 = [ ]1/6 = 1 m/s h/2

A = Q/V = 319.26/ 1 = 319.26 m2

P = 4.75 𝑄 = 4.75 x √319.26 = 84.87 m b
For a trapezoidal channel with ½ H : 1 V slopes
P = b + √5 h
=> 84.87 = b + √5 h
=> b = 84.87 – 2.24 h ……………………. (i)

And, A = (b + h/2) h
=> 319.26 = bh + h2/2
=> 319.26 = 84.87 h – 2.24 h2 + 0.5 h2 [putting the value of b using equation (i)]
=> h2 – 48.72 h + 183.48 = 0

Neglecting unfeasible (+) ve sign, we get

h= = 4.11 m (ans)

from equation (i), b = 84.87 – 2.24 x 4.11 = 75.66 m (ans)

Q. Given, width of channel 5 m, head loss due to friction between A & B is 0.32 m. Assume

Solution:
Applying Bernoulli’s equation between A and B,

now using momentum equation,

 ρ Q β2 V2 - ρ Q β1 V1 = ½ γ 𝑦 - ½ γ 𝑦 – F
 1000 x 81.25 x (1 x 7.07 - 1 x 5.08) = ½ x 1000 x 9.81 x (3.2 2 – 2.32) – F
 F = - 137407 N
The force on the weir plate is equal and opposite to F.
