1.6 Inverse Trigonometric and Inverse Hyperbolic Functions of Complex Numbers

1) The document discusses the derivation of inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions of complex numbers. It defines trigonometric and hyperbolic functions for complex numbers and uses these definitions to derive the inverse formulas. 2) Examples are provided to demonstrate evaluating inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions of complex numbers. The first example evaluates sec-1(i) and the second evaluates tanh-1(2-i). 3) References are provided for additional information on functions of complex numbers. The document is the proprietary property of the Technological Institute of the Philippines.

TOPIC # 6

Inverse Trigonometric and Inverse Hyperbolic Function of Complex Numbers

Intended Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session the students should be able to:

1. be familiar with the derivation of the inverse trigonometric function and inverse
hyperbolic function
2. Evaluate inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions of complex numbers

Inverse Trigonometric Functions of Complex Numbers

Definitions of the trigonometric functions for complex numbers are

𝑒 '( − 𝑒 *'(
sin 𝑧 =
2𝑖
𝑒 '( + 𝑒 *'(
cos 𝑧 =
2
0 12 *0 312
Since sin 𝑧 = 4(
, we can find the inverse by replacing the function with the variable
y.

Let 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛*8 𝑧

sin 𝑦 = 𝑧, by the definition of trigonometric function of complex numbers

𝑒 9( − 𝑒 *9(
=𝑧
2𝑖

𝑒 9( − 𝑒 *9( = 2𝑧𝑖, multiply both sides by 𝑒 9(

(𝑒 9( )4 − 2𝑧𝑖𝑒 9( − 1 = 0, the equation now becomes quadratic and we will use the
quadratic formula to find the roots.

−𝑏 ± √𝑏 4 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎

2𝑧𝑖 ± E(−2𝑧𝑖)4 − 4(1)(−1)

𝑒 9( =

2𝑧𝑖 ± √4 − 4𝑧 4
𝑒 9( =
2

𝑒 9( = 𝑧𝑖 ± √1 − 𝑧 4 , ln both sides then simplify

𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛*8 𝑧 = −𝑖𝑙𝑛(𝑧𝑖 ± E1 − 𝑧 4 )

By similar arguments, the inverse formula of the 5 remaining inverse trigonometric

functions can be derived.

Inverse Trigonometric Function of Complex Numbers

Example 1: Evaluate 𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖

1 1 + √1 − 𝑧 4
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑧 = ln( )
𝑖 𝑧

1 1 + √1 − 𝑖 4
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = ln( )
𝑖 𝑖
8 8H√4
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = ( ln( (
) taking the positive root

8
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = ( ln(−(1 + √2)𝑖) perform the natural logarithm of complex numbers

1 IJ
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = ln((1 + √2)𝑒 4 ( )

3𝜋
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = −𝑖 Kln(1 + √2) + 𝑖)N
2

3𝜋 4
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = − 𝑖 − ln(1 + √2) 𝑖
2
3𝜋
𝑠𝑒𝑐 *8 𝑖 = − ln(1 + √2) 𝑖

Inverse Hyperbolic Function of Complex Numbers

Definition of Hyperbolic function for complex numbers are

𝑒 ' − 𝑒 *'
sinh 𝑧 =
2

𝑒 ' + 𝑒 *'
cosh 𝑧 =
2
0 1 *0 31
Since sinh 𝑧 = 4
, we can find the inverse by replacing the function with the variable
y.

Let 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛ℎ*8 𝑧

sinh 𝑦 = 𝑧

0 Q *0 3Q
4
= 𝑧 by the definition of hyperbolic function for complex numbers

(𝑒 9 )4 − 2𝑧𝑒 9 − 1 = 0 multiply both sides by 𝑒 9 , and the equation becomes quadratic.

−𝑏 ± √𝑏 4 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎

9
2𝑧 ± E(2𝑧)4 − 4(1)(−1)
𝑒 =
2(1)

𝑒 9 = 𝑧 ± √𝑧 4 + 1 ln both sides

𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛ℎ*8 z = ln (𝑧 ± E𝑧 4 + 1)

By similar arguments, the inverse formula of the 5 remaining inverse hyperbolic functions
can be derived.

Inverse Hyperbolic Functions of Complex Numbers

Example 2: Evaluate 𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖)

1 1+𝑧
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 𝑧 = ln ( )
2 1−𝑧

1 1 + (2 − 𝑖)
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = ln ( )
2 1 − (2 − 𝑖)

1 3−𝑖
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = ln ( )
2 −1 + 𝑖

1 √10∠−18.43X
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = ln ( )
2 √2∠135X

1
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = ln (√5∠ − 153.43X )
2
1
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = ln (√5𝑒 *4.Z[( )
2
1
𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = (ln\√5] − 2.68𝑖)
2

𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ*8 (2 − 𝑖) = 0.40 − 1.34𝑖
