ELECTRICAL

SECTION 16100 - BASIC MATERIALS AND METHODS

1.1 REFERENCE:

Requirements of Section 16010 apply to all work under this Section.

1.2 GENERAL :

A. Furnish and install all conduits, cable troughs, wireway/cable tray, joint and outlet
boxes, conductors and miscellaneous materials required for wiring, as specified
herein and shown on drawings.

B. Furnish and install power and control wiring to all equipment, except as otherwise
specified.

C. Perform tests and adjustments and submit reports as specified herein.

1.3 INTERMEDIATE METAL CONDUIT (IMC):

A. General: standard trade sizes, UL approved or equivalent to Smart Tube, McGill or


Panasonic.

B. Material: mild steel, hot dipped galvanized with inside enamel or epoxy coating.

C. Sizes: 15mm dia. minimum.

D. Couplings, unions and fittings: standard, threaded.

E. Use limitation: Meter centers, feeder runs and risers larger than 50 mm. Dia.

F. Expansion fittings: use for runs spanning expansion joints.

G. Paint field cuts and repair damaged protective coating with lead or zinc chromate.

1.4 ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING (EMT):

A. General; standard sizes, UL approved or equivalent to Smart Tube, McGill or


Panasonic.

B. Material: steel, zinc coated outside, enamel coated inside.

C. Nominal size: 15mm. Dia. minimum, 50mm. Dia. maximum.

D. Fittings: Compression type with insert.

E. Use Limitation :

1. Shall be used for all exposed and concealed branch circuit runs, all feeders and
subfeeders, 50 mm. dia. and smaller and all FDAS, PA/BGM, CCTV and Data
installations.

2. For circuits specified in the plans or as approved.

F. Expansion fittings: use for runs spanning expansion joints.

G. Repair damaged protective coating with required layer of zinc chromate paint.

1.5 POLYVINYLCHLORIDE (PVC) CONDUIT :

A. General : standard trade sizes, heavy wall, manufactured to NEMA TC-2 or PNS 14
type 40 rated for 90 degree Celsius cable. Neltex, Crown and Moldex.
B. Material : polyvinylchloride, extruded.
C. Nominal Size: 15 mm. dia. minimum.
D. Couplings and Fittings: standard joint by solvent weld process.
E. Solvent weld shall not exceed VOC level of 510 g/l less water.
F. Provide Intumescent Fire-stop material when passing through floors and walls with
fire-rating requirements. Brand: Hilti, Nelson, or SpecSeal.
G. Use Limitation:
1. As specified in the latest edition of PEC and/or NEC.
2. Not permitted where subject to mechanical damage.
3. As indicated in the drawings.
H. Pulling Hardwares: flat fish tape with ball and flexible leader or polyethylene or
Manila rope. Use of steel pulling cable not permitted.
I. Sizes reflected in plans indicate interior dimensions.

1.6 FLEXIBLE GALVANIZED STEEL CONDUIT :

A. General: standard trade size, UL approved or equivalent.


B. Material: steel, galvanized.
C. Size: 15 mm. dia. minimum.
D. Fittings: Compression type with plastic insert.
E. Use Limitation:
1. Between motor terminal boxes or vibration producing devices and rigid conduit.
2. Short lengths of concealed wiring to lighting fixtures.
3. Other applications: only where approved or where shown on plans.
4. Not more than 1.5 m length.

1.7 FLEXIBLE LIQUID-TIGHT CONDUIT :

A. General: standard trade sizes, UL approved or equivalent.


B. Material: steel, galvanized with outer liquid-tight plastic jacket.
C. Sizes: 15 mm. dia. minimum.
D. Fittings: Liquid tight

E. Use Limitations :
1. Short lengths to vibration producing devices situated in wet or potentially wet
locations.
2. Between motor terminal boxes or vibration producing devices and rigid conduit.
3. Other applications: only where approved or where shown on drawings.
4. Not more than 1.5m length.

1.8 CONDUIT INSTALLATION:

A. General: Install in accordance with applicable codes and recognized standards of


good practice.

B. Location: Approximately as shown on drawings; actual routing subject to approval.

C. Wall and Floor Sleeves:


1. General: Provide for passage of conduits through walls, floors, or partitions. Set
sleeves through in masonry during construction; set sleeves through concrete
before pouring begins.

2. Material: galvanized pipe, securely fastened in position.

3. Provide intumescent fire-stop material when passing through floors and fire-
rated walls.

4. Sleeves through exterior building walls: Install conduit in center of sleeve, fill
annular space with loosely packed oakum or equal. Seal interior and exterior of
packing with hot applied asphalt. Fit the conduit on each side of the wall with
round galvanized steel flange fastened to conduit by two set screws to retain
sealing compound.

5. Sleeves through waterproof constructions: Flanged type.

6. Opening required after footings, walls, floors, or ceiling are constructed shall be
provided and patched at Contractor’s expense in an approved manner.

D. Embedded Conduit:

1. General: Set before pouring of concrete begins. Route in as direct a line and
with as long radius bend as possible.

2. Structural concrete slabs: minimum 50 mm from conduit center to bottom of


slab; maximum conduit size 25 mm, except as directed.

3. Underground installation: encase conduits with concrete, 50 mm from outer face


of conduit.

E. Joints: make with approved couplings and unions to provide electrically continuous
and moisture tight joints. Use of running thread, not acceptable.

F. Expansion joints: use expansion fittings and bonding jumpers wherever conduit
spans building expansion joints.

G. Drainage: Avoid pockets in conduit runs as much as possible; provide suitable


fittings at low spots in exposed conduit where pocket cannot be avoided. Weep
holes not permitted.

H. Bends: not more than equivalent of three 90 degree bends between pulling points.

I. Field cuts and threads :

1. Cut ends of conduit square with hand or power saw and ream to remove burrs
and sharp edges. Do not use wheel cutter.

2. Threads cut on job shall have same effective lengths, thread dimensions, and
taper as factory cut threads.

3. Carefully remove burrs from threads and threads shall not be painted.

4. Apply coat of protective paint as specified to conduits where protective coating


was damaged.

J. Supports:

1. Manufacturer: Unistrut, Kindorf or equal.

2. Hangers: Supports or fastenings: provide at each box, elbow and at end every
straight run terminating in a box or cabinet. Rigid fastenings spaced in
accordance with the Philippine Electrical Code.

3. Clamps: Galvanized malleable iron one-hole straps, beam clamps or other


approved device with necessary bolts and expansion shields.

4. Adjustable hangers:

a. Use to support horizontal runs only.


b. Trapeze hangers: For parallel runs of conduits. Install pipe clamps at end of
each run at each elbow. Install pipe clamps every third intermediate hanger
for each conduit. Paint hangers with one prime coat of epoxy primer or zinc
chromate, one finish coat of an approved color.
Hangers are not detailed but must be adequate to support combined weight
of conduit, conductors, and hangers.

5. Submit shop drawings for approval.

K. Concealing: conceal conduit in all areas except mechanical equipment rooms and
areas as specified. Run exposed conduit parallel with, or at right angles to, lines of
building.

L. Conduit ends:

1. Cap spare conduit.


2. Open conduit ends terminating in panels or enclosures where exposed to
entrance of foreign materials shall be provided with duct sealing compound.
3. Cap conduit ends during construction to prevent entrance of foreign materials.

M. Cleaning: clean and swab inside by mechanical means to remove all foreign
materials and moisture before wires or cables are installed.

N. Conduit connections at panels and boxes: double locknuts and insulating bushings.

O. Modifications: circuits may be grouped from equipment in a common raceway to


junction box, from which individual circuits shall be taken. Install in strict
accordance with applicable codes.

1.9 WIREWAY / AUXILIARY GUTTERS:

A. General: furnish and install wireway/auxiliary gutters as indicated on drawings.

B. Size and arrangement: as indicated on drawings.

C. Construction: minimum 1.6mm thick galvanized steel sheet metal and reinforced
sheet steel, with screw fastened cover. Provide without knockouts.

D. Finish: manufacturer’s standard powder coated epoxy.

E. Provide intumescent firestop sealant when passing through floors and fire-rated
walls.

F. Provide all necessary supports, fittings and miscellaneous materials for a complete
installation.

G. All screws installed towards the inside shall be guarded to prevent wire insulation
damage.

H. Provide bonding jumper at connections based on Table 2.50.6.13 of the PEC.

1.10 JUNCTION AND OUTLET BOXES:

A. General: provide junction boxes for pulling and splicing wires, and outlet boxes for
installation of wiring devices, as required, or as shown in drawings.
As a rule, provide junction/pull boxes in all runs of greater than 20 meters in length.
For other lengths, provide boxes as required for splicing or pulling. Boxes shall be
in accessible locations.

B. Construction: steel, galvanized finish. Provide removable covers attached with


round head machine screws.

C. Support: support boxes independently of conduits entering, by means of bolts, rod
hangers, or other suitable means. Mount outlet boxes on the web of columns
wherever possible.

D. All boxes shall be electrically grounded.

E. In walls or ceilings with a surface of concrete, tile, gypsum, plaster or other non-
combustible material, boxes employing a flush type cover or faceplate shall be
installed so that the front edge of the box, extension ring or listed extender will not
be set back of the finished surface more than 6 mm.

F. Boxes shall be ga.16 (min.)

G. Boxes with concentric knock-outs not acceptable.

H. Manufacturer: Fumaco, MC Gill, Steel City

1.11 NAMEPLATES :

A. General: provide and install nameplates wherever indicated as required in these


specifications. Wording shall be approved prior to purchase of nameplates.

B. Material: Red Bakelite engraving stock, white core.

C. Lettering: engraved, approximately 30 mm high. Wording shall identify function of


device to which nameplate is attached, or identify equipment served by device.

D. Installation (except for factory installed nameplates): attached with sheet metal
screws after painting of equipment is completed.
