Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Quantitative and qualitative research methods can be used together to gain a wide range of results. Quantitative research relies on testing and data while qualitative explores ideas through words. Quantitative requires larger sample sizes and tests hypotheses statistically, while qualitative explores ideas with smaller samples and expresses results verbally. Quantitative and Qualitative research are supplementary methods that one can combine in their
surveys in order to get results that are wide-reaching. Both research methods have different
approaches. Quantitative relies more on factual testing and data. Whereas qualitative explore
ideas, scenarios, classifications and with more words. Quantitative needs a number of
respondents, emphasizes on testing hypotheses and theories, data is analyzed through
statistical and mathematical analysis. Qualitative also emphasizes on exploring ideas and
devising theory or hypotheses, requires relatively fewer respondents and results are expressed
in words. In methods of collecting data, quantitative often entailing a list of multiple choice or
closed questions that are distributed to a sample population. It is also a scenario in which
variables are controlled. Act of observing the phenomenon understudy in a natural environment
where the variables can’t be controlled and consistently registering the presence of particular
themes or words in a set of texts. In qualitative methods of data, it is verbally asking a variety of
open-ended questions to a group of respondents. It conducts a debate between a group of
people regarding a certain topic to gather ideas. Qualitative research enables you to collect
detailed information on a certain topic. You can use it to initiate your research by exploring the
opportunities or problems that people encounter. Those ideas become a “hypothesis” yet to be
proven through quantitative research.

The thing that I have learn about quantitative and qualitative research is that, quantitative is
somehow related to numbers while qualitative is more on explanations. After learning and
researching about these two methods of research, I found myself fund with quantitative
research. Numbers can make sense to me and it seems incredibly logical and help me to
reduce the human experience into a data set of numbers which I can then compute to give me
awesome answers. On the other hand, qualitative research gives the researcher as well as the
person applying the conclusions reached from the research into practice a good understanding
of the human component. It seems that qualitative research can explore the complexities more
delicately than quantitative research. Qualitative research has a higher risk because instead of
calculating numbers, we must interpret human thoughts, experiences and feelings which are
much less concrete variables.
