RECOGNIZING GENERAL TO SPECIFIC IDEA

There is more than one type of transition words, but in this section, I’m going to introduce to you one of the most
commonly used ones- transition or signal words that indicate general to specific idea.
● To test your prior knowledge about general and specific idea, do the activity below.

Directions: Read the following sentences. Decide which sentences belong to Column A
and Column B.

He is an accomplished athlete. He is a skilled golfer.

He drives a 1950 Buick. He drives an old car.
The boy has leukemia. The boy has a serious disease.

EXPLORE
IDENTIFYING THE SIGNAL WORDS
The use of signal words can reveal a particular pattern of development. They show the relationship between or
among ideas.

Directions: Read and study the passages below, and see how transition words act like a bridge for paragraph.

● Choose the signal words used in the following passages.

A. Some of the earliest Chinese poems may date back to 1000 BCE. Thus, the oldest poem
collection dates back to 621 BCE. Evidently, the various poems were compiled over several
centuries, most of them during the Zhou period, at around 600 BCE. It was reported that this
treasury of traditional songs is the oldest collection of poems in world literature.
Consequently, it became one of the Five Confucian Classics.

B. Black English used to be considered simply poor English until linguists

realized that the so-called errors were actually consistent alternative grammatical
forms, some of which originated in African linguistic patterns. For example, the
word “be” in standard English is primarily used as part of the infinitive “to be.”
But in Black English, “be” can also be used to indicate a repeated action or
existential state (Labov, 1972). To illustrate this, in Black English one can say “I
am sick” or “I be sick.” The first means “I am sick at this present moment.” The
second includes the recent past as well as the present; to express the second
concept in standard English, one might say, “I have been sick for a while.”
C. There are ways you can make boring tasks more pleasant. For instance,
bring a portable radio andlisten to music on the ear phone while you
work.

D. Running can make people more aware of their physical surroundings,

such as the scent of honey suckle or the changing moods of the trees.
EXPLAIN
GENERAL TO PARTICULAR OR SPECIFIC

In this part, you are going to find out exactly what transition words
are, and one of its particular type- an exemplification type that
indicates general to specific idea.

In composition, these transition words are used in developing a

paragraph, essay, or speech by moving from a broad observation
about a topic to specific details in support of that topic.
● See page 19 of your textbook. Study what is this pattern of
development that begins with the general idea or statement and is
followed by specific details.
