I. Introduction

An ambitious leader exercises power over his followers, but his / her supporters also have
power over the leader. So, this relationship is interactive by its very nature. The ethics of a
charismatic leader is a strong question of how to use power, i.e., how and how. The purpose
and vehicle of leadership are important when one evaluates the ethical behavior of a charismatic
leader. Perhaps the most suitable position for analyzing the power of a charismatic leader is
an important theory and modern view of power. Charisma has different sources, and any
attempt to link it to a specific human trait is futile. And charity is not just there about words,
ideals and elections. It’s gotten things done, and it's good for the business, especially in the
long run. In the current study, we are looking at hundreds of companies over the next seven
years to see how the change of CEO affects the way the company operates. We are finding
that capable executives can be charismatic and self-controlled when exercising their power
with the greatest social and environmental benefits. Responsible numerous studies have shown
that a leader's ethical orientation is closely related to the employee's job satisfaction and
organizational commitment. Highly ambitious, highly ethical leaders have a better work
environment by reducing conflicts between individuals and the workplace. All of this makes
sense because leaders are role models for how they act through the organization. Behavior can
be used not only for economic termination. It can also be used to make good and make
organizations where individuals can thrive. The more chaotic the economic situation, the more
people want to be led by leaders who can convince them, give them hope and point them in the
right direction. In this case, a talented leader emerges as a necessity for the competition is not
only for large enterprises but also for small and medium enterprises. The challenges posed by
globalization require better, faster and more efficient responses of all enterprises to conserve
and increase their competitive position. In this sense, employees, especially leaders, have
become an important source of competitive advantage for the enterprise. This talented leader
is an individual who has the ability to build strong belief in his or her own vision among
employees, according to our research, change leadership and operational leadership based on
Awards and commendations have a positive effect on the efficiency of the enterprise, while
operational leadership is based on preventive or corrective measures. Interventions after the
occurrence of gaps have a negative impact, especially in small and medium enterprises. This
indicates a gradual need accepting and implementing attractive change and leadership for these
enterprises.

a) Definition of Charismatic Leadership

Charismatic leadership is a leadership style that combines attractive, interpersonal and

persuasive communication to motivate others. A charismatic leader can motivate and motivate
their team towards a larger goal by capturing people's
emotions, creating a sense of confidence, passion and greater
purpose. Leadership differs from other forms of leadership,
such as lizards or autonomy, focusing on interpersonal
relationships and how leaders relate to the people they lead.
Many leaders are charismatic - people want to follow a leader
as a person in one way or another, not for the business goals
they represent.

However, ambitious leadership is a style of leadership that relies on many virtues to capture
the desired attitudes, grow in employees and the company, and produce specific results. They
speak openly, professionally and express their true thoughts without saying too much or too
little. They also allow for open communication between everyone, allowing their employees
to speak freely without fear of repercussions. By allowing their employees to speak openly,
charismatic leaders also need to use empathy and compassion. They are open to the concerns
and desires of employees who are willing to understand their feelings. Because of this, they
are popular among their staff as good listeners and confident. The idea of attraction always
brings the idea of confidence. There is a lot of confidence in the business world. Having the
right attitude and personal appearance creates a better image of confidence. A leader faces
challenges like a big project, with a strong guarantee that he and his team can achieve it, it
shows confidence. When problems arise or problems are discovered, charismatic leaders can
be confident in managing, issuing orders, and communicating clearly about the desires and
outcomes they really want. The most important thing for trust is to look and act, no matter who
goes through what will give good results, charismatic leaders understand that they are not as
perfect as others think. Arrogance is one of the worst traits of leadership. Instead, the leader
should be willing to accept his mistakes and accept the mistakes of his team, this is called
responsible leadership. They understand that they can improve and strive to do so for the
benefit of their team. They also know they are part of a team. If a small task has to be
completed and they have time to deal with it, rather than asking someone to do it for them, they
will do the work themselves. Respect shows their employees that their leaders are human, but
their other characteristics determine them. They can develop and lead the team towards

Soft Skills |2
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

business goals based on their skills and experience. They can accomplish this with a wise
mindset when approaching everything they do. They are the main character leaders who lead
and command. Leaders should be optimistic about the type of people they like or the perception
that things in the world are good, if something goes wrong, they can assure their employees
that the problem can be rectified. They can create a positive attitude towards everyone around
them by always looking at the brighter parts. Charismatic leaders should show great passion
in everything they do. They really enjoy their work. This passion should also flow into other
employees through clear communication and application.

b) Types of Charismatic Leadership

➢ Socialized Charismatics:

A socialized charismatic is a leader who uses power only for the benefit of others, rather than
using it for private gains. Socialized charismatic leadership (SCL) is a type of leadership
characterized by a leader’s altruistic intent and helping others internalizes his or her values.
Socialized charismatic leaders are thought to play an ethical leadership role. The socialized
charismatic formulates and pursues goals that fulfill the needs of group members and provide
intellectual stimulation to them. Followers of socialized charismatics are autonomous,
empowered, and responsible.

➢ Personalized Charismatics:

Personalized charismatics are leaders who use the powers to a certain extent for personal gains,
to serve their own interests. The personalized charismatic leaders have vested interest agenda,
characterized by high authoritarianism, high narcissism, self-aggrandizing, and non-
egalitarian. Such leaders impose self-serving goals and they offer support to group members
only when it facilitates their own goals. They are exploitative leaders who wish to accumulate
power by imposing self-serving goals. Followers of this type of leader are typically obedient,
submissive, and dependent;

➢ Office-holder Charismatics:

For this type of leader, charismatic leadership is more about the office occupied by him/her
rather than his/her personal characteristics. By being a holder of a key position, the leaders
attain high status. Leaders in a large bureaucratic organization can use their authority and the
power associated with the position. Most managers we find in organizations lack charisma.
They are bland personalities, the person you never remember, who has nothing of interest to

Soft Skills |3
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

focus on. They are the people we forget since they can never get anyone excited about what
they are doing.

➢ Personal Charismatics:

A leader with this quality often gains very high esteem through the extent to which others have
faith in them as people. Personal charisma is when someone has very high amounts of
sophisticated social and emotional skills. Irrespective of the high or low status held by this
leader, the personal charismatics are able to influence the followers, through their right traits,
behaviors, and characteristics.

➢ Divine Charismatics:

A historically important type of charismatic leader is that of the divine charismatic. Middle
English also adopted the word as "charisma" to refer to gifts of healing and teaching. Such
leaders tend to have divine grace and they are considered as magnetic savior, who would arise
to lead people through a crisis. The divine charismatic leaders are the ones where people think
that they are god sent.

II.
a) Characteristic of Charismatic Leadership

Every charismatic leader looks a little bit different. However, there are many key
characteristics that most charismatic leaders share:

➢ Communication: A charismatic leader can clearly communicate job duties and

goals to their team and everyone around them. They speak openly, in a professional
way, and convey their exact thoughts without speaking too little or too much. They
also allow open communication between everyone, allowing their employees to
speak freely without fear of repercussion.
➢ Empathy: By allowing their employees to speak openly, a charismatic leader must
also make good use of empathy and compassion. They are open to their employee’s
concerns and passions, willing to understand their feelings. Because of this, they
become well-liked among their employees as a great listener and confidant.
➢ Confidence: The idea of charisma often brings along the idea of confidence. Strong
confidence in the business world has many aspects. Proper posture and personal
appearance create an image of confidence. A leader who takes on challenges, such
as a large project, with strong reassurance that they and their team can finish it

Soft Skills |4
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

shows confidence. When issues arise or problems are found, a charismatic leader
can confidently take control, issue orders, and clearly communicate their wishes
and the outcome they seek. The main takeaway for confidence is to look and act as
if no matter what someone goes through, everything will result in a good outcome.
➢ Humility: A charismatic leader understands that they aren’t perfect. Arrogance is
one of the worst traits of leadership. Instead, a leader should be willing to accept
their mistakes and take on mistakes from their team as their own. They understand
they can improve and strive to do so for the sake of their team. They are also aware
they are a part of the team; if a small job needs to be completed and they have time
to tackle it, instead of asking someone to do it for them, they accomplish the job
themselves. Humility shows their employees that their leader is human, yet their
other traits are what gave them command.
➢ Self-awareness: Regardless of how amazing a leader can be, they must also be
aware of themselves and how others react to them. Many eccentric leaders don’t
understand the stress they put on their employees, but a charismatic leader focuses
on understanding themselves and their roles within their team.
➢ Maturity: A charismatic leader is someone who was put in their position due to
their maturity. They can develop and drive a team towards the business’s goal due
to their expertise and experience. They can accomplish this with a wise mindset
when approaching everything they do. They are the leader, the parental figure who
directs and commands.
➢ Optimism: A leader should be optimistic, the “glass half full” type of person. If an
issue does come around, they can reassure their employees that the issue can be
corrected. They can build a positive attitude for everyone around them by always
looking on the brighter side.
➢ Passion: A charismatic leader should always show a great deal of passion in
everything they do. They show great enthusiasm for their work, genuinely. This
passion should also bleed into.
b) Why Charismatic Leadership are effective?
• Emotional impact: Charismatic leaders are visionary, appeal to emotions, and
effectively arouse followers' motives.

demonstrating desired behaviors.

c) Why Charismatic Leadership popular among other leadership?

• Charisma is a sparkle in people that money can't buy. It's an invisible energy
with visible effects." — Marianne Williamson
• They are change agents and status quo ante.
• They are visionaries.
• They are magnetic personalities with lot of energy and enthusiasm.
• They project an exciting and colorful picture to their followers.
• They are great communicators and good at emotional intelligence.
• They love to live on edge and they are risk takers and thrive in risk.
• They are self-promoters. They boost and boast about themselves without
which they don't get excitement.
• They don't bother for fear of failure and fear of death.
• They are highly emotional but balance themselves.
• They are good at storytelling and believe in the concept of management by
anecdote. They start their speeches with anecdotes to connect with their
audience quickly and effectively.
• They follow their heart. They develop vision for others and are highly
confident and optimist.
• They network with people and build bridges. They are honest and help others.

d) Charismatic Leadership Theory

Charismatic leadership is a trait-based leadership theory where the leaders act as visionary
driven by their convictions and motivate their followers to work towards common vision
using their charm and persuasiveness. These charismatic leaders act as role models and
exhibit extraordinary characteristics that inspire devotion and motivation in followers to
persuade change. Leaders are able to cultivate a profound sense of trust with the group of
followers.

Soft Skills |6
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

Charismatic leadership came to the forefront of public attention during the 2008 US
elections when Barack Obama was elected as the first African American president. He is
believed to be charismatic, among many other leadership attributes he demonstrates.

The trait approach began with an emphasis on identifying the quality of great persons,
shifted to include the impact of situations on the leadership, and, currently, has shifted back
to reemphasize the critical role of traits in effective leadership. Max Weber defined the
term “charisma” as, “charisma is applied to a certain quality of an individual personality
by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with
supernatural, superhuman, exceptional powers or qualities”.

e) Pros and Cons of Charismatic Leadership

Charismatic leaders can have a powerful, positive influence on an organization and the people
they lead. But if approached the wrong way, this leadership style can easily lead to unintended
consequences. As with anything, charismatic leadership has its own set of advantages and
disadvantages. Although leaders using a charismatic style often act as a catalyst for change,
they might not be the right fit for organizations that are
based on rigid structures and processes. To help you better
understand what these potential strengths and weaknesses
can look like, we outlined the pros and cons of this
leadership style below:

❖ Pros of charismatic leadership

➢ It is a leadership style which creates an
emotional appeal
People are inspired by charismatic leaders because they see a chance to reach their own
dreams. These leaders give them a chance to do something that feels bigger than themselves.
They want to follow these people because they feel like there is an emotional connection
between themselves and the leader. With this connection, strong loyalties are often formed by
those who choose to follow a charismatic leader.

➢ It gives people a chance to think differently

When a charismatic leader shares their vision, it gives people a chance to think
differently about a specific subject. In some instances, they can even begin to think of bigger

Soft Skills |7
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

plans or dreams that are achievable. Even though it sometimes requires a leap of faith to follow
a charismatic leader, when the message is strong enough, there will always be people who are
willing to take the risk.

➢ It decreases turnover rates within an organization

Employers often seek out charismatic leaders when they are struggling with high attrition rates.
People feel connected to the charismatic leader more than they do the company, which creates
a workplace that feels more welcoming. People come to work feeling happier. They are
encouraged by the open communication and the rewards which happen because their leader is
willing to take the occasional risk.
➢ It can be used to create a positive impact on society
One of the best examples of a positive charismatic leader is Martin Luther King Jr. His goal
was to help create change in society by shifting how people thought about specific people,
laws, and circumstances. Not only did he inspire people with his speeches and work, he was
also willing to stand side-by-side with those who shared his vision of a better country and
worked just as hard to create the results he wanted.
➢ It prioritizes the learning process
Charismatic leaders understand that humans are imperfect. They are not seeking out
perfectionism in every project. These leaders do want their followers to learn from their
mistakes. They also learn from their own mistakes. Although this may create tunnel vision, or
even a certain level of arrogance, it can also be the catalyst a company needs to make the final
move toward a final outcome.

❖ Cons of charismatic leadership

➢ It is dependent upon the energy levels of the leader
Charismatic leadership is centered on the energy levels of the individual involved.
Encouraging people to follow a specific vision or dream can be an exhausting experience. If
energy levels begin to sink, there will be fewer followers willing to come along. If that energy
is depressed for a prolonged time, then some people may abandon the vision altogether. That
is why many charismatic leaders eventually experience burnout. They’re stuck carrying the
emotional load for everyone.
➢ It prevents new learning opportunities from occurring
Charismatic leaders convince others to follow their own vision. That means people tend
to abandon their own dreams, creativity, or plans because they see something “better” through

Soft Skills |8
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

the perspective of the leader they choose to follow. Instead of following their own
opportunities for growth, they push the leader to become better, stronger, and more
influential. They stop living for themselves because they focus all their energy toward the
goals described by the leader.
➢ It can change the value systems of the followers
People might initially begin to follow a leader because they share the same overall goals
that are being described. Over time, that affiliation can change the personality, value systems,
and spiritual definitions of the person following the charismatic leader. They might find
themselves agreeing to do things that they normally would find to be appalling. The charisma
offered by the leader creates a situation where many believe that the ends will justify the means
to get there.

➢ It can be used for selfish ambition

One of the best examples of how charismatic leadership can be used to create harm comes from
Adolf Hitler. He was imprisoned in 1923 because he attempted to seize power through a coup
in Munich. He attacked the Treaty of Versailles, denounced international capitalism, and used
his charismatic charm to influence the electorate. By
1933, the Nazi Party was the largest elected party in the
Reichstag. Once that happened, the journey toward the
Second World War had begun.

➢ It is not a leadership style which fits into a

rigid structure
Charismatic leaders tend to pursue their own vision
at the expense of any rules or regulations that may be in
place. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, like the diner sit-ins that took place during the Civil
Rights Movement. From an organizational standpoint, however, a charismatic leader can be
difficult to handle. There may be rigid regulations or processes that must be followed and these
leaders may choose on their own to go in a different direction.

The Pros and Cons of the charismatic leadership provide a foundation for people and
organizations to chase bigger and better dreams. These leaders can establish a strong vision,
create a meaningful mission, and then recruit people to begin the work required to get there.

Soft Skills |9
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

That process can be used for good. It can also be used to create harm. That is why there must
always be an emphasis on individual thinking when pursuing the goals of a charismatic leader.

f) How to apply Charismatic Leadership

For Charismatic leadership to be successful, the leader must incorporate the following
elements in his leadership behavior:

➢ Should keep on honing communication skills

Communication skills are the asset of a charismatic leader. He can connect with his followers
on a deep emotional level by effectively communicating with them. Thus, the leader should
keep sharpening his communication skills to be able to be relevant to the needs of the changing
times and his followers.

➢ Should keep a broader picture in mind

The Charismatic leader shouldn’t be blind. He should keep a
broader picture in his mind to lead his followers in the proper
direction. This is because the followers may not be able to spot
and speak about the fallacies of the charismatic leader.

➢ Should have an eye for details and practicality

Again, it is easier for the charismatic leader to get caught up in his ideal vision or get carried
away by his popularity. To assess the effectiveness of his leadership, the leader should keep on
scanning his environment for the details of the practical execution and implementation of his
programs and policies.
➢ Should let the followers develop their leadership skills
To avoid the possibility of leadership void after him, the
charismatic leader should help his followers learn the traits of
leadership from him and help them practice the same.

Soft Skills | 10
BELTIE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY faculty of business administration

g) The problem of Charismatic Leadership

➢ Unsustainable growth
One problem is that this kind of leader can charge an
organization into hyper growth. Their unique vision, ideas, and
ability to inspire people may lead to incredible short-term gains.
But in the long-term run, slow and steady growth wins the race.

➢ It prevents new learning opportunities from occurring

charismatic leaders convince others to follow their own
vision. That means people tend to abandon their own
dreams, creativity, or plans because they see something
“better” through the perspective of the leader they choose
to follow.

h) Solution to the problems

➢ Solving an unstainable growth problem

Create teams for long-term and effective planning to

develop more work towards success. And you should
not rush while planning the process, you should do it
easily, that way your plan will last longer, progress
and planning will go hand in hand.

➢ Creating opportunity
The leader should give the team a chance to speak out
what they think about the process and what they want to
change about that process. That opportunities are the
meaning that shows them that you are really care about
their idea and what they think so they will the motivation
to think about the greater idea.
