Assignment II/Project SEMII 2021/2022: Evaluation

This document outlines an assignment for an instrumentation and measurement course. Students will form groups of 5-6 people to propose and build a sample circuit for a sensory device that measures a physical property. Each group must explain the working principle and applications of their chosen device. In weeks 10-12, groups will search for information and simulate their circuitry. In weeks 13-14, groups will present their work live using web conferencing. The evaluation will assess the demonstration, presentation, teamwork and understanding, with different weightings for the demonstration simulation and group presentation. An assessment form is provided in Appendix A to evaluate each group.

Assignment II/Project

SEMII 2021/2022
Course : Instrumentation and Measurement
Code : BEJ 10702

Introduction:
Sensory device or transducers are being applied widely to collect changes of physical properties
which are of the interest of the user/researcher in an application. A collection of quantitative
data is essential in scientific research and industrial applications. Physical properties include
temporal-spatial properties, temperature properties, kinematic and kinetic properties, chemical
properties, optical properties, radio-active properties, etc. It is always the key concern of the
user/researcher regarding the repeatability, accuracy, and precision of the sensor/transducer. A
practical experience with the sensory device makes the learning more fun. Sharing of learning
outcome among the students would definitely inspire ourselves into further query in science
and promote the learning.

Method:
The students are asked to form into groups with 5-6 persons per group. Each group should
propose a type of sensory device which could measure a type of physical property. The efforts
include:
1. Select a type of sensory device (Done- Assignment 1).
2. Explain its working principle, its applications with the references from journal papers,
conference papers or internet resources. (Done- Assignment 1)
3. Build a sample circuitry for the sensory device.
4. Simulate the circuitry & present the work to others.

Examples Sensor Circuitry :

1. Humidity sensor for gardening application and irrigation
2. Temperature sensor for oven temperature control
3. Ultra-sonic sensor for distance detection in a mobile robot.

Evaluation:
The evaluation will be based on the online presentation.

The assessment (15%)

1. Demonstration
2. Presentation
3. Team-working
4. Understanding the working principle

Demonstration Circuit Simulation : 10%

Presentation: 5% per group.
*The assessment form is attached in Appendix A.
Note: Assessment during presentation consists of group assessment.
The members of the group will be asked during the presentation to evaluate their
understanding.

Key dates:
Week 10 – Week 12 • Search your information.

• Findout the type of software simulation

Week 13– Week 14 • The live presentation by ‘starts in Week 14.
