About the Poet

"Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" is a 1951 poem by American poet Adrienne
Rich. It appeared in her first published book of poems, A Change of
World. Told from the perspective of an anonymous speaker, the poem
describes a woman, Aunt Jennifer, who crafts vibrant tapestry panels
(depicting tigers) to escape—mentally, at least—her unhappy
marriage. Written at a time when divorce was unacceptable, the poem
criticizes the traditional institution of marriage, suggesting that it
oppresses women.

Overview of the Poem

Structure of Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers

‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’ by Adrienne Rich is a three-stanza poem that is

separated into stanzas of four lines, known as quatrains. These
quatrains follow a simple rhyme scheme of AABB, with the couplets
changing end sounds from stanza to stanza. While there is evidence of
metrical patterns in ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers,’ it is not completely
consistent. There are sections of the poem in which Rich uses nearly
perfect iambic pentameter and moments where she moves away from
it and uses trochees instead.
Brief Of Three Staza
Stanza ‐1.

Aunt Jennifer’s tigers prance across a screen,

Bright topaz denizens of world of green.

They do not fear the men beneath the tree;

They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.

Explanation: Aunt Jennifer’s tigers prance and move across a screen

or wall.. They are bright coloured like the golden yellow jewel (topaz).
They are the denizens (dwellers) of green forests. They are not afraid
of the men standing under the tree. They are well groomed (shining)
and running fast on the panel with confidence.

( Here Aunt Jennifer has knitted images of tigers on the panel. They
are not real or living tigers. The images of tigers are created by aunt on
the panel with her own hands. The tigers represent her dreams. Her
desire is to be free from fear and oppression that control her life and
wants to become brave like tigers.)

Stanza‐ 2.

Aunt Jennifer’s fingers fluttering through her wool

Find even the ivory needle hard pull.

The massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band;

Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand.

Explanation: Aunt Jennifer’s hands are moving about her wool to

create beautiful images of tigers. But the movement is not easy and
smooth. Aunt finds the ivory needle very hard to pull through wool.
The Uncle’s wedding band seems very heavy on her hand. She feels
burdened with her marital (wedding) responsibilities.

(Aunt always fears from her husband. Her marital life is burdened for
her. Through this stanza the poet wants to carry the fact that a women
does not feel ease to carry he martial life. Her humour does not
matter before her husband. She feels so much subjected that the
martial bond is a burden on her. This is also with aunt Jennifer.)

Stanza‐ 3.

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hand will lie

Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.

The tigers in the panel that she maid

Will go on prancing proud and unafraid.

Explanation: The final stage reveals aunt Jennifer will remain terrified
always in her life as well as after her death. She will be confident with
unpleasant painful experiences after her death because she is
mastered by her husband. The tiger in the panel that she made will go
on jumping. They will be proud and unafraid.

Question :- Aunt Jennifer is the representative of exploited women in

her society. As a teenager/ responsible citizen what changes can be
brought about in the society for uplifiting the position of women ?

Answer:

Since time immemorial women have been regarded as the weaker sex
and have been given secondary or subordinate positions. Even today,
when women constitute almost half of the world population, and a
considerable part of the workforce, cases of gender inequality and
women exploitation are common.

It is the need of the hour to empower women to reduce gender

inequality in our society and to stop this exploitation. The first step
towards women empowerment is to educate women so that they can
be made aware of their rights and privileges. Teaching job skills and
providing employment opportunities also will serve to empower
women as it gives them economic independence.

Women should be allowed to express their opinion in public and at

home. This will help in building self-esteem and confidence. Gender
sensitisation at home, educational institutions, workplace etc will
bring about woman empowerment in the true sense.

write about pioneering indian woman who become role model of

empowerment

Kalpana Chawla:

The first Indian woman in space and a role model for those who
dream of shattering glass barriers and shooting for the stars, Kalpana
Chawla’s achievements have, without a doubt, made India proud,
Born in Haryana, Kalpana had always been fascinated by the stars and
was an inquisitive girl. She came from a poverty-stricken family, but
neither that nor the fact that no Indian woman had been in space
before, stopped “Monto” from achieving her dreams.

Her story is one of true resilience, determination and a testimony to

the fact that no dream is too far if a person gives their all to chase it.
