This document provides English learning activity sheets for 4th grade students in Week 5. The activities focus on identifying meanings of unfamiliar words through analyzing word prefixes and suffixes. Students are asked to complete charts adding prefixes and suffixes to root words to form new words with different meanings. They are also tasked with writing words that correspond to given meanings, prefixes/suffixes, and sentences where they must identify the meaning of underlined words. The overall goal is for students to learn how structural analysis of prefixes and suffixes can help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Identify Meaning of Unfamiliar Words through Structural Analysis using Affixes:

Prefixes and Suffixes

Background Information:

Unfamiliar words are a lot like puzzles. When we come across a word we don't know
or understand, it helps if we can look at it like it's a puzzle that can be broken apart into puzzle
pieces. Structural analysis is dividing words into parts to discover what an unknown word
means. Word parts contribute to the overall meaning of a word. Many words in the English
language are composed of a root word and affixes: a prefix, and/or a suffix. (Elder 2008, 216)
Affixes can either be prefixes or suffixes. Many English words are formed by adding
affixes. By knowing the meaning and uses of affixes, you can create and add more words to
a root word to widen your vocabulary.
A root word is a word that does not have a prefix or a suffix and is the base or core
that can't be reduced into a smaller word form.
Prefix is a syllable or word part added to the beginning of a word to form a new word
with different meaning. Study the table below for examples of prefixes being added to a
base/root word to create new word with different meaning.

un- not happy un + happy = unhappy not happy

On the other hand, suffix is a syllable or word part added to the end of a word to
create a new word with new meaning. Study the table below for examples of suffixes being
added to the end of a base/root word to create new word with different meaning.
