Literature Reflection

The student gave a literature presentation analyzing two World War I poems, "The Soldier" by Rupert Brooke and "The Man He Killed" by Thomas Hardy. She struggled to choose which poems to analyze and lost her voice two days before the presentation. On the day of the presentation, she was nervous that her voice was weak and that other students did not properly analyze the poems as instructed. Despite the difficulties, she learned the importance of voice projection, confidence, and grammar for presentations.

Reflection (Presentation)
First World War poems are interesting to analyse. Even though, I was
exposed with the First World War poems during my foundation in Malaysia,
analysing poem in Britain education system is far more different when compared with
Malaysia education system. Hence, it is a golden opportunity for me to undertake
First World War poems for my presentation in order for me to learn the style of
Britain education in analysing poem and present it in the seminar. Rather than
analyzing the poem in terms of literary devices and literary elements, the task
encouraged the students’ to critically evaluate the poem by considering the poet’s
purpose of writing the poem, methods used in the poem and to indicate whether the
poem is successful or unsuccessful. From here, it is obvious that this task requires a
lot of background reading regarding the poet and the poem chosen for the
presentation. Therefore, in my presentation, I chose two different poems written by
two different poets during the First World War which were the ‘The Soldier’ written by
Rupert Brooke and ‘The Man He Killed’ written by Thomas Hardy.

For me the most meaningful learning happened when I thought it would be

easier to choose poems for my presentation. It took me few days to think which
poem would be better to present during the seminar. This is probably because of
many poems written during the First World War. Later, I noticed that ‘The Soldier’
and ‘The Man He Killed’ would be interesting poems to analyse critically for the
presentation. It could be related to the themes used by the poet. ‘The Soldier’
highlighted the willingness of a soldier to die for his country, England whereas ‘The
Man He Killed’ focuses on the brutality of war. These poems concentrates on
different views about war and it attracts me to analyse it in a critical way for my
presentation. It was very motivating for me to prepare for the presentation as I had
to do a lot of background reading about the poet. Initially, noticed that there were
many resources for ‘The Man He Killed’ whilst there were not many for ‘The Soldier’.
Subsequently, I felt that it would be more interesting if I analyse the poem without
any resources so as to test my knowledge on the literature subject. It was really

exciting to prepare the notes for presentation as it was my ideas. The originality was
there and it made felt that I am good in Literature subject.

My effort for the presentation just crashed when I lost my voice two days
before the day that I supposed to present. It was very difficult for me to talk. I was
worried about the presentation. I had to restructure my Power Point Slides by adding
all the information that I supposed to present in the seminar. This is perhaps for the
viewer to see my effort in critically evaluating the poems that I had chosen for the
presentation. I was very nervous as usual before the presentation. There were so
many reasons why I was nervous at that time. First, it was going to be my
presentation on that day and I lost my voice- I was so helpless which that made me
to feel nervous thinking how to present it. Secondly, each and every presenter on
that day did something different than stated in the task. It is clear that students
required analysing First World War poem but indeed one of them did Second World
War poem. Some did not even discuss what the poet’s purpose is and whether the
poem was successful or not. Personally, I felt that many did not follow the task.
Eventually, this made me to b more fearful. Out of curiosity, I asked the lecturer to
confirm whether what most of them presenting is right or not before conducting my
presentation. The lecturer replied each of them had different style of presenting.
This made me more worried and at last I decided to focus on my presentation. I had
done my presentation by talking softly as it was hurting for me when I raised my
voice.

Having experienced all the difficulties in my presentation, I now hope that I

would not fall sick again if I were given another chance to present. Voice projection
plays a vital role in a presentation. Thus, it is important for the presenter to project
his/her voice in order for the audience to know what the presentation all about is.
Additionally, I have learned it is not good to be so fear during the presentation day as
I forget all the key points that I should talk during the presentation. From this task, I
realise that I have slightly improve my skills in analysing a poem critically. However, I
have not sufficiently improved my grammar during the presentation. It is important for

me to improve my grammar skill during presentation as, in future, I will be a teacher.
This skill would definitely be essential for me because it is important for a teacher to
be a perfect role model for the students- rather than standing with a fear face to
teach the students in the classroom. Because I am not yet confident about my
grammar, I will now need to increase my presentation practice by reading some tips
for presentation. I hope my next step of improving presentation would definitely be
benefit for me in the future.
