APSC180 Sample Final Exam
SESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS:
Course Number: APSC180 Section Number: Duration: 2.5 HOURS
Figure 1 shows a truss with three cables AB, AE and AF supporting a 5 kN load.
a) Show that the tension in cable AE, TAE, expressed in the rectangular components
(Cartesian) form is TAE (–0.560 i – 0.467 j + 0.684 k) kN, where TAE is its magnitude.
[8 marks]
b) Draw the free body diagram of ring A and write the equations of equilibrium that will
allow you to find the tensions in the three cables. You do not need to solve the
equations. [10 marks]

a) Apply the method of joints to joint D and find the force in members CD and DE. State
whether they are in tension or compression. [6 marks]
b) Apply the method of sections by taking an appropriate cut and find the force in
member BE. State whether it is in tension or compression. [6 marks]
c) Draw the free body diagram (FBD) of the entire truss and show that the support
reactions at A are Ax = 42 kN to the left and Ay = 14 kN upward. [6 marks]

Figure 4 shows a 27-kg concrete block that has been positioned on a 20° incline. As shown
in the figure, there is space restriction so a rope is used to move the wedge to position the
concrete block. At impending motion:
a) Draw the free body diagram of the concrete block with an appropriate coordinate
system. [4 marks]
b) Calculate the direction and magnitude of the contact force from the wedge to the
concrete block. [6 marks]

c) Draw the free body diagram of the wedge and calculate the tension T in the part of the
rope attached to the wedge. [5 marks]
d) Calculate the pulling force P in the horizontal part of the rope. [3 marks]

Figure 5 shows a tow tank model ship acted upon by a 10 N force at its rear and a 5 N force
at its front. Replace these two forces with a single wrench resultant. Your answer must
include the rectangular component (Cartesian) form of the resultant force R, the magnitude
M of the moment collinear with this resultant force and the coordinates of the point P in the
y-z plane through which the resultant force R of the wrench acts.

Figure 6 shows a frame secured to the horizontal x-y plane by a ball-and-socket joint at A
and receives support from the loose-fitting ring at B. Under the action of the 2-kN load,
rotation about a line from A to B is prevented by the cable CD, and the frame is stable in the
position shown. The weight of the frame is negligible compared with the applied load. To find
the magnitude of the tension in the cable CD and the components of the support reactions
at A and B, obtain the matrix equation representing the 6 simultaneous equations in this
format:
∎ ⋯ ∎ 𝑇𝑇 ∎
⎛ 𝐴𝐴
⎞ ⎛ 𝑥𝑥 ⎞ ⎛ ⎞
⎜⋮ 𝐴𝐴𝑦𝑦

⎝∎ ⋯ ∎ ⎠ ⎝ 𝐵𝐵𝑧𝑧 ⎠ ⎝∎⎠
(Note: it is fairly simple to solve the 6 equations. However, please show clearly the above
matrix equation.)
