Application of Derivatives: Manoj Chauhan Sir

This document discusses methods for finding the maxima and minima of continuous functions using derivatives. It introduces the first derivative test and second derivative test to determine if a critical point represents a local maximum, minimum or neither. Several example problems are provided to demonstrate applying these tests to find the local extrema of various functions. The concept of global maximum and minimum over a given domain is also introduced.

Maxima Minima - Lecture 1

INTRODUCTION TO MAXIMA AND MINIMA
Method of Finding extrema of continuous functions
(a) First Derivative Test
(1) At a critical point x = x0
(i) When f(x) attains maximum at(x = a)
(ii) When f(x) attains minimum at(x = a)
Q. True/False
If f '(x) changes from positive to negative at x0 while moving from left to right,
ie, f '(x) > 0, x < x0
f '(x) < 0 , x > x0,
then f(x) has local maximum value at x = x0.
Q. True/False
If f '(x) changes from negative to positive at x0 while moving from left to right,
i.e., f '(x) < 0, x < x0
f '(x) > 0, x > x0,
then f(x) has local minimum value at x = x0
Note : If sign of f '(x) doesn’t change at x0, then f(x) has neither a maximum nor a minimum at x0.
Q. Let f(x) = x3 – 3x2 + 6 , find the point at which f(x) assumes local maximum and local minimum.
Q. Let f(x) = x3 , Find the point at which f(x) assumes local maximum and local minimum.

POINT ON CONSIDER
It must be remembered that this method is not applicable to those critical points where f '(x) remains
undefined.
Q. Let f(x) = x(x – 1)2, find the point at which f(x) assumes maximum and minimum.
Q. Let f(x) = (x – 1)4 discuss the point at which f(x) assumes maximum or minimum value.
Concept of Global Maximum/Minimum
Q. Let f(x) = 2x3 – 9x2 + 12x + 6. Discuss the global maxima and minima of f(x) in [0, 2].
