Seismic Load Analysis (As Per IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2002)

The document provides details on seismic load analysis for a building as per Indian code IS 1893(Part 1) : 2002. It discusses the calculation of base shear, design seismic coefficient, seismic weight of the building, and distribution of design lateral force to each floor based on their seismic weight and height. Sample calculations are shown for column shear, moments and beam shear/moments at the 1st floor level for both shorter and longer frames using the portal frame method of analysis.

Seismic Load Analysis [As per IS 1893(Part 1) : 2002)

Estimation of Base Shear :

Design Seismic Base Shear, VB= AhW [As per Clause 7.5.3]

Where, The Design Horizental Seismic Coefficient as per Clause 6.4.2

Ah = (ZISa)/(2Rg)

Where, Zone Factor of Kolkata, Z = 0.24 [From Table 2, for Zone 4 (severe)]
Importance Factor, I = 1 [From Table 6, for All other Buildings]
Response Reduction Factor = 3 [From Table 7, for Ordinary RC frame]
Now, I/R = 0.33 <1 [Hence OK]
Average Response Acceleration Co-efficient, Sa/g [From Clause 6.4.5, for Soft Soil sites]
{Where, Approximate Fundamental Natural Period of Vibration, Ta = (0.09h/√d)
[Clause 7.6.2]
Height of Building, h = 32.6 m
Base dimension of building = 17.5 m [Longer Frame]
Base dimension of building = 15.5 m [Shorter Frame]
So, Ta = 0.70 seconds [Longer Frame]
0.75 seconds [Shorter Frame]}
So, Sa/g = 2.38 [Longer Frame]
} [0.67 ≤ T ≤ 4.00]
2.2 [Shorter Frame]

So, Ah = 0.10 [Longer Frame]

0.09 [Shorter Frame]

Calcultion of Load Coming from a Floor :

Self Weight of Slab (W1) = 1105.34 kN
Self Weight of Floor finish and Ceiling plaster(W2)= 690.06 kN
S.W. of Roof Treatment and Ceiling plaster(W3)= 690.06 kN
Self Weight of Beam (W4) = 608.44 kN
Self Weight of Column (W5) = 1024.00 kN
Self Weight of Periferial Brickwork (W6) = 671.62 kN
Self Weight of Internal Brickwork (W7) = 518.34 kN
Self Weight of Parapet Wall (W8) = 475.20 kN
Live Load in Each Floor (W9) = 542.5 kN [50 % of Live Load Considered]

So, Load coming on a Typical Floor, Wf = (W1+W2+W4+W5+W6+W7+W9) = 5160.30 kN

Load coming on Roof Floor, WR = (W1+W3+W4+(0.5)W5+W8) = 3391.04 kN

So,Seismic Weight of Building, W = (9*Wf + WR) = 49833.72 kN

Now, Design Lateral Force at ith floor, Qi = VBx(Wihi2)/(Wihi2) [As per Clause 7.7.1]

Now, VB = AhW = 4746.34 kN [Longer Frame]

4466.89 kN [Shorter Frame]

Beam Moments -
(i) Considering Equillibrium at Joint A :
MAU = 296.66 kNm
MAL = 353.63 kNm
MAB = MAU + MAL = 650.29 kNm
(ii) Considering Equillibrium at Joint B :
MAB = MBA = 650.29 kNm
MBU = 593.32 kNm
MBL = 707.26 kNm
MBA + MBC = MBU + MBL
So, MBC = 650.29 kNm

(iii) Considering Equillibrium at Joint C :

MBC = MCB = 650.29 kNm
MCU = 593.32 kNm
MCL = 707.26 kNm
MCB + MCD = MCU + MCL
So, MCD = 650.29 kNm
MDC = 650.29 kNm

Beam Shear -
VAB =(MAB + MBA)/LAB = 260.12 kN
VBC =(MBC + MCB)/LBC = 216.76 kN
VCD =(MCD + MDC)/LCD = 289.02 kN
