Classification of Dimension Stones

The document is an assignment submitted by Abdullah (Registration No: 11PWMIN0638) to Engr. Siddique Akbar in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. The assignment discusses the classification of dimensional stones based on their geological, physical, chemical, and practical properties. Dimensional stones are classified geologically as igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary. Physically, they are classified as stratified or unstratified. Chemically, they are classified as siliceous or calcareous. Practically, common dimensional stones include granite, marble, slates, sandstone, and limestone.

Classification of Dimension Stones:

1. Geological classification
2. Physical classification
3. Chemical classification
4. Practical classification
1. GEOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION: Geologically dimension stone are classified as:

a. Igneous: e.g. Granite

b. Metamorphic: e.g. slate, marble, Quartzite, dolomite stone, travertine’s, Onyx and
serpentine’s ( Green Marble)
c. Sedimentary: limestone, fossil-stone, shell-stone, cantera, adoquin, sandstone etc.
2. PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATION:

The classification is based on physical properties of the rocks, the manner and arrangement
of
different particles and mass forming stone. There are two basic types:
 Stratified Rocks,
 Un-Stratified Rocks
• STRATIFIED ROCKS:

These show distinct layers that can be separated. The plane along which the separation of
the layers
Can be carried out is called cleavage plane. E.g. Limestone, Slate and
Sandstone etc.
• UN-STRATIFIED ROCKS:

These rocks do not display any sign of strata and these cannot be split into slabs. These do
not have any separation plane and examples of these are Granite, Marble etc.
3. CHEMICAL CLASSIFICATION:
Chemical constituents in the rocks are the basis of classification. Chemically the rocks are
classified as:
 Siliceous,

 Calcareous.

• Siliceous Rocks:
Siliceous the main constituent in siliceous rocks. Silicon free states is called as sand and in
combined state it is termed as silicate. Rocks contain silica in free form are Harder than
those having silica in combined state. Silicate rocks are likely to be disintegrated. Examples
are Sandstone, Quartzite etc.
. • Calcareous Rocks:

The leading constituent is calcium carbonate or lime. Even dilute hydrochloric acid can
deteriorate such rocks. Limestone and Marble are important examples.
4. PRACTICAL CLASSIFICATION:

Practical classification is based on the use of the rock. Practically Rocks have been
Classified as:
 Granite,
 Marble,
 Slates,
 Sandstone,
 Limestone.
Practically limestone, which gets good polish, is termed as Marble.
