1 General
This specification defines the requirements regarding the required IT infrastructure for the EDGE device and
the services operated with it.

Since the PCs and network infrastructure are provided and maintained by the customer, the responsibility for
data security (virus protection, firewall) lies exclusively with the customer. The recommendations listed below
are non-binding and do not claim to be exhaustive.

2 EDGE Device
2.1 General

The ENGEL EDGE Device is an industrial PC which is provisioned and managed by ENGEL. It is directly
assigned to a customer via the serial number and can only be used by that customer. The EDGE Device
works with a Linux operating system, more precisely with a Debian distribution and uses a TPM chip.
The EDGE device is required for operating the following ENGEL services:
• e-connect.24
• e-connect monitor

The applications required for this are operated as Linux containers using the Docker Engine.

The initial customer configuration of the EDGE device is created in a local web application, which is directly
accessible via the support interface using a web browser. No additional software is required.
The EDGE device communicates exclusively via LAN (Ethernet) with the connected injection molding ma-
chines and via the internet with the ENGEL backend.

Depending on the number of configured services, one Edge Device can deal with up to 50 ENGEL ma-
chines. An activation of additional services later can lead to the fact that the number of machines on the
Edge Device must be reduced or a second Edge Device must be used.

2.2 Dimensions and operating temperature

Dimensions
L x W x H: 180 mm x 134 mm x 50 mm
Weight: 1 kg

Operating temperature
The EDGE Device is a fanless industrial PC where the case acts as a heat sink. If the EDGE Device is used
in an area without air conditioning, an additional heat sink from our range of accessories is recommended.
The maximum operating temperature of the EDGE Device is 50°C.

2.3 Connections

The EDGE device has three Ethernet network ports (1000 Mbps), one HDMI port, one display port, four USB
ports, and one power supply connection.

2.3.1 Network connections

In the configuration wizard you need to select whether the EDGE Device should be set up with or without
network zoning. The two configuration options are described in more detail in chapter "3.2.1 Integration into
customer's LAN".

The LAN1 port is only required in case of network zoning and is intended for the connection to the protected
machine network. Only a static or dynamic IP address configuration without a default gateway is possible for
this connection. When used without network zoning, LAN1 is deactivated and not used.

In case of network zoning, the LAN3 network port on the EDGE device is used to connect to a network that
has an internet connection (possibly an office network). The IP address for LAN3 can be configured either
dynamically and statically. If used without network zoning, LAN3 is used to connect to the ENGEL endpoints
as well as to the machines.
The term ENGEL endpoints refers to the official ENGEL servers that the Edge Device must be able to reach.
It must be ensured that the EDGE device can reach the ENGEL endpoint (e3.engelglobal.com) on port 443
via the internet. Your IT department may need to set up a firewall exception for the EDGE device. Depending
on which services are routed via the EDGE device, connections to further endpoints may be necessary. De-
tails can be found in the respective service section in the "Service" chapter.

Access to an EDGE device is controlled by a firewall. In the as-delivered configuration, this only allows ac-
cess to the configuration wizard via the SUPPORT port.
In addition to this, certain services offer a client application with which the EDGE device can be accessed on
a local network. For more information, refer to the chapter for the service in question.
The SUPPORT network port is intended for commissioning and managing the EDGE Device. ATTENTION:
Behind the SUPPORT port, a DHCP server runs on the EDGE Device; it assigns the connected PC/laptop
an IP address for the configuration work. For further information please refer to the "Network" chapter.

2.3.2 Power supply

A manufacturer-specific power supply unit, 230/100V, 50/60Hz, is included in the scope of delivery. An unin-
terruptible power supply must be available for the EDGE device.

2.3.3 Display port, HDMI and USB

These connections are not required during operation or for commissioning. It is not possible to log on to the
operating system via keyboard and screen, since no user account is available for logging on.

3 Network
3.1 IP address range, customer network

LAN3 port
Connection to the internet and (optionally) the machines
• DHCP address (recommended) or static IP address

SUPPORT port
For commissioning and managing the EDGE Device
• SUPPORT port: 192.168.157.100 (DHCP server active!)
• DHCP address range: 192.168.157.111 – 192.168.157.120

LAN1 port
Connection to the machines
• DHCP address or static IP address (without default gateway)

The Edge Device uses the IP range 172.17.0.0/16 for the internal communication between the services.
Therefore, per default it is not possible to use an IP address from this IP range for the ENGEL machines,
LAN1 or LAN3 of the Edge Device. If it is necessary to use the IP range 172.17.0.0/16 or any subnet of this
range, it is possible to change the internal IP range of the Edge Device with an update. In this case, please
contact our service at e-connect.engelglobal.com.

In addition, when selecting the IP addresses, the following addresses must be excluded, as they are already
used internally by ENGEL machines.

3.2 Overview of ENGEL global service network

3.2.1 Integration into customer's LAN

ENGEL recommends the use of LAN cables for communication with the machines and ENGEL endpoints to
ensure a stable connection. Interruptions to the connections can impair the quality of service.
When commissioning the EDGE Device, you can choose between integration with network zoning and with-
out network zoning.

3.2.1.1 With network zoning (recommended)

When commissioning the EDGE Device with network zoning, the LAN1 port is used for communication with
the machine network. The EDGE device uses LAN3 for communication with the ENGEL servers.
This type of integration clearly defines which port on the EDGE device communicates with which compo-
nents. The advantage is that the machine network does not need to be routed and does not require access
to the internet. The machine network can therefore also be a physically isolated network.

© ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH – Contact: [email protected] 6/11

3.2.1.2 Without network zoning
When commissioning the EDGE Device without network zoning, the LAN3 port is used for communication
with the machine network and the ENGEL servers. LAN1 is not required in this case.
With this type of integration, the machine network must either have direct access to the internet or at least be
physically connected to the company network so that the EDGE device can reach the machines via routing.
The advantage here is that all EDGE device communication uses the same port.

3.2.2 Integration with a WiFi network or 3G/4G connection

The EDGE device itself does not support WiFi or UMTS connections. A wired LAN connection on LAN3 is
mandatory. However, you can also connect a WiFi router with UMTS support to LAN3. In this way, even
machines that cannot be connected to the company's internal machine network, e.g., due to the distance to
the switches, can benefit from our digital solutions. However, it is important that the EDGE device has a sta-
ble internet connection without interruptions, as there may otherwise be severe limitations to various ser-
vices.

4 Preparations for commissioning the EDGE Device

4.1 Before your EDGE device is delivered

1. Register with the customer portal

Register with the customer portal if you do not already have access. (https://reg-portal.engelglobal.com).

2. Define the network structure

You need to define how the EDGE device will be connected to the customer network. See chapter
3 Network for the options the EDGE device offers for this.

3. Prepare the network

Prepare the network for the defined network structure. Wire the machines and assign the required IP ad-
dress to the machine. For information on the correct LAN port on the machine and instructions on how to
configure the IP address, refer to the machine's manual.

4. Enable the ports

Make sure that the IP addresses/hostnames and ports for the ENGEL endpoints, which are used from
the services, are unblocked on the firewall and can be reached by the Edge Device. You can find all de-
tails at chapter 2.3.1 Network connections. For the setup and the configuration, the Edge Device must be
able to connect to the ENGEL endpoint e3.engelglobal.com on port 443.
The ports required for the machine communication and the additional endpoints can be found in the
chapter for the service in question.

5. Assign IP addresses on the customer portal

On the customer portal, assign the configured IP addresses to the machines.

4.2 After receiving your EDGE device

1. Commissioning
Commission your EDGE device with the help of the Quick Start document.
This is included with your EDGE device on delivery. An electronic version is available on the ENGEL
customer portal or can be downloaded from the following address: www.engelglobal.com/e-connect24-
setup.

5 Services
5.1 e-connect.24

e-connect.24 is the remote support solution from ENGEL for ENGEL injection molding machines.

5.1.1 Functional principle

A service request can be triggered whenever a problem occurs with the machine that requires assistance
from ENGEL. The service request triggers a notification to the responsible service branch and gives ENGEL
the opportunity to diagnose the machine remotely. Once the problem has been solved, the service request
can be closed. ENGEL can only diagnose the machine while the request is open.
A service request is not a permanent VPN connection. When a service request is triggered, the EDGE de-
vice establishes TLS communication to the ENGEL Central Server (e-connect.engelglobal.com). Over this
connection, instructions are mainly exchanged between the EDGE device and the central server. If a techni-
cian needs to actively diagnose a machine, certain ports can be forwarded via the encrypted connection for
the duration of the analysis (e.g., VNC connection on the machine).

5.1.2 Clients
e-connect.24 Client
The e-connect.24 client software is used to operate the system; in addition to handling the service and con-
nection requests, it offers the option of using the same remote maintenance functions as ENGEL does. The
client software can be installed on any number of computers. Administrative authorizations on the target
computers are required to install the client software.
No special performance requirements apply in terms of the computers for the e-connect.24 client. The oper-
ating system required is Microsoft Windows 10 or newer.

e-connect.24 Web Client

Only service requests can be managed with the Web Client. You only need a web browser for the Web Cli-
ent. Nothing needs to be installed.

e-connect App
The e-connect app can be used free of charge for CC200 and CC300 machines with an active e-connect.24
agreement. The app queries the shot counter, cycle time and alarms from the machines every minute. In
addition, you can send and finish service requests. Due to the possibility to send service requests with the
app from any place, an additional release by an employee of the customer, which is connected to the internal
customer network, is required for remote service by an ENGEL technician.
Since data is requested from the machines for the app, a user with the "Authorized Agent" role must give
legal approval on the ENGEL customer portal. The data for the app is only made available after this release.
A user account for the app must also be requested from ENGEL.

5.1.3 Supported machines

The e-connect.24 remote support solution supports all ENGEL machines with an EC/CC100-A03 control unit
as of year of manufacture 1999: the control unit system version must be >= 2.00 and the basic version >=
9.30.
If the machine in question does not have an Ethernet interface, this must be retrofitted.
The e-connect app only supports CC200 and CC300 machines.

5.1.4 Internet access specification

• Uploading and downloading at least 512 kbps bandwidth
• Port 443 (SSL) must be enabled for connections from the EDGE device to the ENGEL Central Serv-
er (e-connect.engelglobal.com)

5.1.5 Ports to the machines
Any communication between the machine and the EDGE device is always initiated by the EDGE device. To
do this, the EDGE device needs the following ports for machine communication:

Table 2: Ports for communication with controls for e-connect.24

5.2 e-connect monitor

e-connect.monitor is ENGEL's smart service for monitoring the status of machines' process-critical compo-
nents, such as wear monitoring for screws, pumps or oil. For this to occur, the e-connect.monitor for the
equipment needs to have been ordered and activated.

5.2.1 Functional principle

The machine generates data packages at certain cyclic intervals based on specific measurements for the
respective components. These data packages are fielded by the EDGE device, transferred to the ENGEL
servers, evaluated and then prepared and displayed for you on the ENGEL customer portal.

5.2.2 Supported machines

e-connect monitor only supports CC300 machines. Depending on the component, hardware and software
retrofits for the machine may be required on top of the service agreement.

© ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH – Contact: [email protected] 10/11

5.2.3 Internet access specification
Depending on which component is monitored, the data volumes can vary.

Table 3: Data volume per machine and monitored component.

Component Approximate data volume per machine
Oil 136 MB per year
Pump 5 MB per year
Ball screw 2,068 MB per year and sensor (at least two
sensors per machine)

5.2.4 Ports to the machines

To retrieve the data packages the EDGE Device needs the possibility to communicate with the machine on
port 22.
