Crack Width of Doubly Reinforced Beam

This document summarizes the crack width check calculations for a beam with a width of 350 mm, total depth of 700 mm, and effective depth of 640 mm under a factored bending moment of 216.6602 kN-m. The calculations check the crack width at three locations: a) below a reinforcement bar where the width is 0.076 mm, b) midway between bars where the width is 0.128 mm, and c) at the bottom corner where the width is 0.194 mm. All crack widths are less than the permissible limit of 0.3 mm.

Crack Width Check as per IS 456: 2000 and RCC Design by Pillai and Menon

Width of the beam, b = 350 mm

Total depth of the beam, D = 700 mm
Clear cover = 25 mm
Effective cover = 60 mm
Effective depth, d = 640 mm
Cover to compressive reinforcement, d' = 45 mm
Characteristic compressive strength of concrete, σck = 25 MPa
Characteristic yield strength of reinforcement, σy = 500 MPa
Total area of tension reinforcement = 1030.44 mm2
Total area of compression reinforcement = 2012.19 mm2
Factored bending moment, Mu = 1.5 (D + L) from ETABS
= 216.6602 kN-m
Mu/(b*d^2)= 1.511 N/mm2
Calculation of depth of neutral axis using elastic theory:
Modular ratio, m = ES/Ece
= 8.00
depth of neutral axis (x) = 121.467 mm
Gross momemt of inertia of section, Ig = bD^3/12
= 1.00E+10 mm4
Cracked moment of inertia of section, Icr = bx^3/3+m*Ast*(d-x)^2+(1.5*m-
1)*Asc*(x-d')
= 2.43E+09 mm4
OK
Service bending moment (M) = 144.44 kN-m

strain in concrete at level of steel, ɛd= M(d-x)/(Ece*Icr)

= 0.001234
Strain in concrete at the outer most tension face, ɛD = (D-X)/(d-x)*Ed
= 0.001377

Permissible crack width = 0.30 mm

a) Width of crack directly under a bar on tension face of concrete:

acr = cmin
25 mm
a' = 700 mm
Average strain, ɛm = ED-(bt*(D-x)(a'-x)/(3*Es*At(d-x))
= 0.001012
Crack width, w = 3*acr*Em
0.076 mm
OK
b) Width of crack at a point on tension face midway between two bars:
acr = 45.186 mm
a'= 700 mm
Average strain, ɛm = ED-(bt*(D-x)(a'-x)/(3*Es*At(d-x))
= 0.001012
Crack width, w = (3*acr*Em)/(1+2*(acr-cmin)/(D-x))
= 0.128 mm
OK

c) Width of crack at bottom corner:

acr = 74.853 mm
a' = 700 mm
Average strain, ɛm = E1-(bt*(D-x)(a'-x)/(3*Es*At(d-x))
= 0.001
Crack width, w = (3*acr*Em)/(1+2*(acr-cmin)/(D-x))
= 0.194 mm
OK
