Redevelopment For Metro and MRTS Corridor

This document discusses redeveloping the spaces around the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) corridor. The MRTS is an elevated railway that spans 17 km in Chennai, India, connecting the central business area to the IT corridor. Transit-oriented development provides opportunities to meet challenges of rapid motorization in Indian cities by including housing, offices, retail, and amenities near transit. Redeveloping the 18 MRTS stations could improve connectivity, safety, and modal shift by creating pedestrian-friendly areas, multi-modal interchanges, and placemaking while inducing shifts from private to public transit.

INTRODUCTION :
The Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System, a state-owned subsidiary of Indian Railways, is a
metropolitan elevated railway line in Chennai, India. Operated by the Southern Railways, it is the
first elevated railway line in India and also the country's longest elevated corridor spanning
17 km.Although it is segregated from the Chennai Suburban Railway, they both are operated by Southern
Railway and are integrated in a wider urban rail network. Built at a cost of ₹ 15,710 million, the line runs
within the city limits from Chennai Beach to Velachery, covering a distance of 19.34 km (12.02 mi) with 18
stations, with an average daily ridership of 100,000 commuters. Connecting the central business area of
old Madras with the IT corridor, the section has a potential capacity of 425,000 passengers a day.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TOPIC :

TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT OR TOD IS A TYPE OF COMMUNITY

DEVELOPMENT THAT INCLUDE A MIXTURE OF HOUSING,OFFICE,RETAIL AND /
OR OTHER AMENITIES.

IT ALSO A UNIQUE OPPURTUNITIES FOR INDIAN CITIES TO MEET THE

CHALLENGE OF RAPID MOTORIZATION.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:

INDIA IS WITNESSING RAPID URBANIZATION. IT IS THE

INEVITABLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS. ACCORDING TO 2011
CENSUS, 377 MILLION INDIANS COMPRISING 31.14

GROWING CITIES IN INDIA ARE POWERFUL WHICH RESULTS

IN A SHIFT OF RURAL POPULATION TO URBAN AREAS.THIS
SITUATION CAUSE WORK ON LOW WAGES AND CITU DOES
NOT OFFER SUFFICIENT AFFORDABLES HOUSING WHICH
RESULTS IN SLUM.

VERY FEW HAVE THE LUXURY OF STAYING CLOSE TO THE

PLACE OF WORK. BUT THOSE WHO TRAVEL LONG GO INTO
MANY PROBLEMS.

A GOOD TRANSIT SYSTEM HAS A LOT TO OFFER A

GROWING CITY. IT GIVES PEOPLE MORE CHOICES ABOUT
HOW THEY WANT TO GET AROUND.
WHY I CHOOSE MRTS ?

HOWEVER AFTER TWO DECADES AFTER SOTHERN RAILWAYS

AND THE TAMIL NADU GOVERNMENT DEVELOPED THE
CHENNAI BEACH-VELACHERY MRTS NETWORK MOST OF THE
18 STATIONS HAVE SHADIEST STRUCTURES.

WITH MULTIPLE ENTRY AND EXIST POUNTS, POOR LIGHTNING

AND ZERO POLICE PATROLLING THE STAIONS HAVE
ATTRACTED SOCIAL ANTI SOCIAL ELEMENTS WHO FIND IT
EASY TO TARGET PASSENGERS.

OVER THE LAST DECADES ,AS THE IT TECH PARKS ON OLD

MAHABALIPURAM ROAD HAVE EXPANDED, ROAD TRAFFIC IN
THIS AREA HAS BECOME WORSE. AS MRTS SURGE INTO A
CHEAPER AND FASTER MODE OF TRANSPORT.

I TO HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE IN THIS STATION DURING MY

COLLEGE TIMES.
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS I WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM

PEDESTRAIN & NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORT (NMT)

FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

CONNECTIVITY NETWORK DENSITY

MULTI-MODAL INTERCHANGE

INDUCING MODAL SHIFT

PLACEMAKING AND ENSURING SAFETY

“Every Time To Get Late At Work I Think
Twice Before Taking An MRTS Train Though I
Have To Travel Just Four Stations Away”
