Problem Set 2 - Axial Loading
Problem Set 2 - Axial Loading
Problem 1:
Determine the average normal stress developed in both cross-sections shown below. What
further increase in load is possible in the circular tube section if the stress in the tube is
limited to 40 MN/m2 ?
Problem 2:
a) If the turnbuckle shown below is subjected to an axial force of P = 4000N, determine the
average normal stress developed in section a-a and in each of the bolt shanks at B and C.
Each bolt shank has a diameter of 12mm.
b) If the average normal stress developed in section a-a of the turnbuckle and the bolt shanks
at B and C are not to exceed 100 MPa and 300MPa respectively, determine the maximum
axial force P that can be applied to the turnbuckle. Each bolt shank has a diameter of 12mm.
Problem 3:
Determine the average normal stress developed at points A, B and C. The diameter of each
section of the bar is indicated in the figure below.
Problem 4:
A bar ABCD consists of three sections: AB is 25mm square and 50mm long, BC is of 20mm
diameter and 40mm long and CD is of 12mm diameter and 50mm long. Determine the stress
set up in each section of the bar when it is subjected to an axial tensile load of 20kN. What
will be the total extension of the bar under this load? For the bar, E = 210 GPa.
Problem 5:
A brass rod 25mm in diameter and 600mm long carries an axial load of 50kN. Measurement
shows that the diameter reduces by 0.00875mm and the length extends by 0.6mm. Determine
the modulus of elasticity E and Poisson’s ratio for the material.
Problem 6:
A rectangular bar 50mm wide, 12mm thick and 800mm long is subjected to a tensile force of
75kN. If the bar is made of steel with E = 200GPa and ν= 0.3, calculate the changes in
dimensions.
