Lesson Elaborate

The document outlines a lesson plan where students will work collaboratively in groups to plan and conduct investigations into physical and chemical changes. They will choose powdered and liquid ingredients to observe reactions and changes, recording their observations and conclusions. The lesson involves students planning investigation questions, gathering materials, performing experiments, recording results, and discussing as a class what was observed and concluded. The goal is for students to understand physical and chemical changes through hands-on investigation.

Specific learning objectives;

Students will work collaboratively to plan investigations. Students will record their plans on
planning sheets and conduct investigations to further develop their understanding of physical
and chemical, reversible and irreversible change. Students will use their observation skills to
help determine what their powdered ingredients were.

Preparation;
Students will commence this lesson by completing individually their investigation worksheet.
Science workstations will be set up around the classroom and students will work in groups of
3 to conduct their investigation. These science workstations will have equipment and
ingredients setup ready for students to choose from and then conduct their investigations.
Students must choose 3 dry or powdered ingredients, that have been labelled A,B,C D,E,F,G
(independent variables) and 1 clear liquid labelled 1,2,3,4(dependent variable) and the results
recorded into their worksheets.
Ingredients for investigating. The

 Flour (A)
 Bicarb (B)
 Sugar (C)
 Washing powder (D)
 Plaster of paris (E)
 Custard powder (F)
 Sherbet (G)
 Vinegar (1)
 warm water from a kettle (2)
 ice water from jug (3)
 lemonade (4)

Equipment required for student investigation;

 the clear glass beakers
 clear glass jugs
 lab coats
 safety glasses
 measuring spoons
 glass bowls
 kettle

Introduction:
Beginning the lesson the teacher will recap on the prior learning experienced so far.
Explaining the purpose of this investigation, the teacher will instruct students about the
process for their investigation then placing students into groups and instructing these groups
to identify and select key roles group members. Using the whiteboard the teacher will list
both physical and chemical changes and their definitions to help guide students in planning
and preparing their investigations. Working in these groups students will formulate their
questions and begin completing their investigation worksheet.
Part one
Students will fill out the planning phase of their investigation worksheet. Students will
formulate their questions some examples of questions are;
1. What am I going to investigate?
2. What I think will happen?
3. Why I think it will happen?
4. What am I going to do?
5. What will I need?
6. How will I make it a fair test?
Part two
The students will conduct the investigation. First collecting equipment, selecting ingredients,
setting up workstations then conducting the experiment and recording their results on to their
worksheet. Once the experiment has been completed and anecdotal notes have been taken
the students will then return to their individual desks and then complete their student planned
investigation worksheet answering the questions they had developed in their student planned
investigation. Some suggestions of these questions are:
1. what happened?
2. Was this what I expected?
3. Why it happened?
4. What were my powdered ingredients?
Conclusion
Whole class discussion about what was observed on how the students had achieved their
conclusions. Writing on the whiteboard a few of the answers given for what happens and
why.
Assessment evaluation
Collect worksheets for marking. Observation made during the investigation. Class
discussion with answers noted on white board.
