Ans: Yudhistira told Nakula to look for water.

2. Why do you think Nakula was happy when he got to the place?
Ans: Nakula was glad when he got to the place and saw that there was a pool with
transparent (Clear) water,

3. Why do you think Nakula did not obey the voice?


Ans: Nakula was surprised when he heard a voice, but he did not obey the voice as he was
carried away by his intense thirst.

4. What happened to Nakula when he drank the water?


Ans: At once he began to feel terribly drowsy and he fell down, to all appearance dead
when he drank the water.

5. Why did Yudhistira send Sahadeva to see what the matter was?
Ans: Yudhishtira sent Sahadeva to see what the matter was as Nakula did not return even
after a long time.

6. Why did Sahadeva meet the same fate as Nakula?


Ans: Sahadeva had met the same fate as that of Nakula because he also did not obey the
voice and drank water from the enchanted pool.

7. What did Arjuna see when he got to the pool?


Ans: Arjuna saw his brothers lying dead near the pool when he went in search of his
brothers.
8. Why do you think the voice did not allow Arjuna to drink water?
Ans: The Pool belonged to the person of the voice. The voice wanted answers for its
questions . Hence the voice didn’t allow Arjuna to drink water before answering its
questions.

9. Why did the invisible being laugh at Arjuna?


Ans: The invisible being told Arjuna not to drink water for which Arjuna became very
angry. He shot sharp arrows in the direction of the voice. The invisible being laughed in
scorn as the arrows couldn’t touch the invisible.

10. What was the warning of the Yaksha to Yudhistira?


Ans: Yaksha warned Yudhishtira not to drink water before answering its questions and
had also told that his brothers died because they did not heed to the warning.

11. Do you observe any difference between Arjuna and Yudhistira in their
response to the invisible voice?
Ans: There is a huge difference between the responses of Arjuna and Yudhishtira. Arjuna
was angry but Yudhishtira was calm. Arjuna wanted to avenge the deaths but Yudhishtira
wanted to bring back their lives. Arjuna was Arrogant but Yudhishtira was humble.

12. Why do you think all the brothers fell unconscious when they drank the
water?
Ans: The pool was enchanted by the Yaksha. It was a test conducted by Yama. Hence they
fell unconsciuous immediately after touching the water of the pool.

13. Why do you think the Yaksha gave Yudhistira a boon?


Ans: Yaksha tested Yudhishtira and Yudhishtira had performed well in the test. Hence the
pleasesd Yaksha gave a boon.

14. Why did Yudhistira choose Nakula in preference to Bhima and Arjuna?
Ans: Kunti and Madri were the two wives of Pandu , father of Pandavas. After the pool
tragedy , Yudhishtira , a son of Kunti survived and so she was not completely bereaved. So,
to be fair, He chose Madri’s son Nakula to be revived

15. Why did Yama take the form of a Yaksha?


Ans: Yama took the form of a Yaksha to test his son Yudhishtira and other Pandavas. He
also wanted to give them some boon after the test . Hence he came in the guise of Yaksha.

Answer each question below in a short paragraph (30- 40 words).


1. “There must certainly be water there.” How do you think Nakula came to that
conclusion?
Ans: The Pandavas lost everything in the game of dice to the Kauravas and had to live in
the forest for twelve years. During this period they had to constantly move from place to
place. One day , the Pandava brothers wandered deep into the forest in pursuit of a deer
during hot summer. The sun was hot overhead and they grew more and more weary and
thirsty. Nakula was asked by Yudhistira to see whether there is any pool or river nearby.
Nakula climbed the nearby tree, looked around and at a little distance he saw a few water
plants and cranes. Hence he concleded that there must certainly be water there.
2. “Arjuna wanted to destroy this unseen foe.” Why do you think he wanted to
do so?
Ans: Nakula was sent to fetch some water for his brothers . He did not return, Hence
Sahadeva was sent to see what the matter was. As he has also not returned Arjuna went in
search of his brothers. Arjuna went swiftly. He saw his brothers lying dead near the pool.
Heart-broken with grief, he wanted to avenge their deaths. However he too was
overwhelmed by a monstrous thirst, which compelled him towards the fatal pool. Again
the warning voice was heard. Arjuna became very angry and shot sharp arrows in the
direction of the voice. The invisible being laughed in scorn as the arrows didn’t touch him.
Hence Arjuna wanted to destroy this unseen foe

3. “Yudhistira himself proceeded in the direction his brothers had taken.” What
made Yudhistira take that decision?
Ans: Yudhishtira had sent his brothers one after the other in search of water and to see
what happened to their brothers who did not return. As Powerful Bhima and Brave
Arjuna had also failed to return Yudhishtira became anxious. Puzzled and worried that his
brothers had not returned, Yudhistira himself proceeded in the direction, his brothers had
taken
