Indices of Daily Temperature and Precipitation Extremes

This document provides descriptions and formulas for 18 temperature index variables that can be used to analyze daily temperature extremes and calculate indices like growing degree days. Some of the indices count the number of days when the maximum (TX) or minimum (TN) temperature is above or below fixed thresholds. Others calculate temperature anomalies by comparing to percentile thresholds or long-term averages. The indices can be used to analyze trends in cold/warm extremes, the length of the frost/growing season, or the occurrence of tropical nights.
