Introduction To Material Handling

Material handling involves the movement, storage, and protection of materials throughout production and warehousing facilities. It aims to minimize costs, delays, and safety risks while maximizing efficiency. Materials are classified based on their physical form and characteristics to determine appropriate handling methods. Common equipment includes storage and lifting devices, conveyors, and industrial vehicles. Hazards stem from weight, ergonomic stresses, equipment misuse, and unsafe conditions. Preventive measures center on lifting assistance, personal protective equipment, equipment safety protocols, and hazard identification.

INTRODUCTION

TO MATERIAL
HANDLING
MATERIAL HANDLING DEFINITION

It is the art and science of moving, packing and storing of substances in

any form. It is the loading, moving and unloading of materials. Both
includes manual and mechanical.
Some of the other definitions are:

 Material handling is the movement and storage of materials at the

lowest possible cost through the use of proper methods and equipment.

 Material handling is the art and science of conveying, elevating,

positioning, transporting, packaging and storing of materials.
OBJECTIVES OF MATERIAL HANDLING

 Minimize cost of material handling.

 Minimize delays and interruptions by making available the
materials at the point of use at right quantity and at right time.
 Increase the productive capacity of the production facilities by
effective utilization of capacity and enhancing productivity.
 Safety in material handling through improvement in working
condition.
 Maximum utilization of material handling equipment.
 Prevention of damages to materials.
 Lower investment in process inventory.
CHARACTERISTICS & CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS

As innumerable different materials are used and need to be handled in

industries, they are classified based on specific characteristics relevant
to their handling.

Basic classification of material is made on the basis of forms, which are

 Gases
 Liquids
 Semi Liquid
 Solids
CHARACTERISTICS & CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS

 Gases are generally handled in tight and where required, pressure resisting
containers. However, most common method of handling of large volume of
gas is through pipes by the help of compressor, blower etc. This process is
known as pneumatic conveying.

 Liquids and semiliquids can be handled in tight or open containers which

may be fitted with facilities like insulation, heating, cooling, agitating etc.
Large quantity of stable liquids/semiliquids are generally conveyed through
pipes using suitable pumps, which is commonly known as hydraulic
conveying.
CHARACTERISTICS & CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS

 Solids form the majority of materials which are handled in industrial situation.
Solids are classified into two main groups: Unit load and Bulk load
(materials).

Unit loads are formed solids of various sizes, shapes and weights. Some of these are
counted by number of pieces like machine parts, molding boxes, fabricated items.

Bulk materials are those which are powdery, granular or lumpy in nature and are stored
in heaps. Example of bulk materials are: minerals (ores, coals etc.), earthly materials
(gravel, sand, clay etc.) processed materials (cement, salt, chemicals etc.), agricultural
products (grain, sugar, flour etc.) and similar other materials
TYPES OF MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT

Type 1: Storage and Handling Equipment

Type 2: Bulk Material Handling Equipment

Type 3: Industrial Trucks

Type 4: Engineered Systems

HAZARDS ASSOCIATED W/ MATERIAL HANDLING

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO INJURIES:

 Weight and bulkiness of objects

 Bending, twisting, turning movements
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED W/ MATERIAL HANDLING

HAZARDS:

 Improper operation of equipment

 Accumulated materials or clutter
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED W/ MATERIAL HANDLING

 Unsafe conditions of materials or containers

 Flammability or toxicity of some materials
 Weight of materials
 Binding ties or other devices that secure bundles or
bound materials
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED W/ MATERIAL HANDLING

 Falling objects
 Lifting, pushing, pulling, or otherwise manually
moving large, heavy items
 Improperly stacked materials
 Struck-by or caught-in/-between hazards
PREVENTING HAZARDS

MOVING MATERIALS MANUALLY:

 Use devices to assist with holding loads

 Wear PPE
 Use proper lifting technique
 Seek help for oversized loads
 Use blocking materials
PREVENTING HAZARDS

OVERHEAD AND GANTRY CRANES:

 Never move a load over co-workers or allow co-workers to

walk underneath.
 Return the load block to its designated location after use.
 Do not leave the load block low enough for someone to
run into.
 Never leave a suspended Load unattended.
 Do not leave unused slings suspended on a crane hook
