Assignment No. 1

Provide at least two (2) examples of any civil engineering related problems that uses numerical
methods in solving it. Briefly explain the concept behind those problems and approaches on how to
solve it.

Numerical methods utilize the power of algorithm in which allows complex phenomenon in engineering
be represented numerically or be converted into a computer program which typically yields an
approximate solution. These approximate solutions are helpful to engineers to quantify problems and
form conclusion according to these approximations. Some of the engineering applications are as follows:

- Forces & Moments on Structural Members: It’s very important for engineers to identify how
forces on all directions affect the stability of members and how couple forces influence the
reaction of the structural members. Engineers use systems of linear equations to identify the
unknown quantities and conceptualize mitigation plans to prevent catastrophic failures to the
structure once loads are applied. Numerical methods such as using matrices or finite element
method allow structural analysis to be more accurate and more efficient on larger scales.
Inputting the initial values of the structural members allow the computer algorithms to
determine the values of the forces acting on the members.
- Coefficient of Thermal Expansion of Materials: Aside from the importance of the conceptual
designs, engineers need to identify the correct materials to be used in the construction of the
proposed projects. Different materials react to different environmental factors such as
temperature. Thus, it’s very important to determine under what specific temperatures will
materials expand or contract. Numerical methods such as regression analysis allow engineers to
determine the inflection point of the materials and allow them to strategize minimizing the risks
of breaking once certain temperature levels are reached. Different data points on different
temperatures fed to the algorithm will identify if certain materials are ideal for certain locations
on the project.
