HOWTO — Installing Vivado on Windows


This HOWTO describes the steps needed to install Xilinx’s Vivado development tool, which is needed for
FPGA-based lab courses. This is a long process and may stall, so check back from time to time at step 12.

1. From the Xilinx 2019.1 archive downloads page


(https://www.xilinx.com/support/download/index.html/content/xilinx/en/downloadNav/vivado-
design-tools/archive.html) under Vivado Archive (left side) download the Vivado HLx 2019.1:
WebPACK and Editions - Windows Self Extracting Web Installer
(https://www.xilinx.com/member/forms/download/xef-vivado.html?filename=Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_Web_2019.1_0524_1430_Win64.exe ).
The downloaded file includes “SDK” as part of the name.
2. Start the program

3. You may be asked to upgrade, click Continue

4. You should be installing on a recent version of Windows. Click Next.

5. If you have not yet created an account with Xilinx, do so, then enter your credentials and click Next.

6. Agree to all the terms and click Next.

7. Select Vivado HL WebPACK to install, click Next.

8. Select only the Zynq-7000 device and click Next.

9. The default destination folder for the install should be fine. This is where the main program is
located, though links to it will be created on your desktop. Click Next.

10. Check that your configuration is correct, then click Install.

11. You may be asked to re-enter your Xilinx account credentials. Download and installation will take
quite a while…

12. If the installer fails at some point you will be presented with an option to continue.
a. Choosing to continue should pick up where it left off.

b. Choosing to quit means you will be asked if you want to keep all that was downloaded
already so you can restart the install, or delete it all. Choose wisely.

13. Once the installer is finished and the program correctly installed, it will delete all the downloaded
files.

A link to the main program will be placed on the desktop.

14. Installation is complete.
