FIRST STEP TO ACHIEVE YOUR OBJECTIVE

Human development is a lifelong process of physical, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional growth and
change. In the early stages of life—from babyhood to childhood, childhood to adolescence, and
adolescence to adulthood—enormous changes take place. Assessment of development occurs
constantly as parents, school personnel, and clinicians evaluate children. Our responsibility includes the
identification of concerns of patients upon admission to any medical facility or during bedside rounds.

It is not uncommon for nurses to hear some of the following statements from postpartum patients.
Determine if these statements are FACT by writing F or if it is a MYTH by writing M on the space
provided.

__M__1. All babies sleep through the night by three months of age.

__M__2. Baby-talk negatively impacts language development.

_M__3. Don’t pick your baby up when s/he cries. You will spoil them!

__F__4. The Terrible Two's are a terrible time!

__M__5. Teething is the culprit for babies’ long-term distress.

__M__6. Early talkers are geniuses amongst their peers.

__M__7. Boys are usually more hyper than girls.

__M__8. Classical music makes our babies smarter.

__M__9. The bigger the size of the head, the smarter your child is.

__M__10. Newborns can’t tell the difference between their mother and any other

person.
