Using the 3-4-5 Method to Create a Perpendicular

Determining the Largest Multiples of 3-4-5 for a Given Building Size

3-4-5 is the basic layout method used by every UBC craft to erect a perpendicular
. to a line. For
small applications this number combination works well. As buildings ·1nt rease in size, a larger
number combination must be used. Multiples of 3 '-4'-5' are calculated by multiplying each number
by a common factor.

If, for example, 3-4-5 is multiplied by a factor of 2 then 6'-8'-10' is obtained. If 3-4-5 is multiplied
by a factor of 3 then 9'-12'-I 5' is obtained, and so on. -·. : :·/·

Sometimes a layout location allows for the use of a larger multiple than. the building size. For
example, if space permits, then 30-40-50 may be used to lay out a right angle for a building whose
size is 27'-6" x 38'-9".

Very often, however, the largest multiple of 3-4-5 that can be used on a buil_9iqgjs limited to the
maximum size of the building. In order to achieve the greatest accuracy for.the layout, the largest
multiple of 3-4-5 should always be determined.

' ..
·"

In the problems below, first determine which multiplication factor to use in order to get the largest
multiple of 3-4-5 that will fit within the building. Then, list the largest multiple.

Note: The first problem is an example.

. Example:

Factor 20

Multiple 60'-80'-100'

Step l: Take the smaller whole number of feet and divide by 3'. (lgnor_. _tp.e remainder.)
..
79'-;...3'=26'

Step 2: Take the larger whole number and divide by 4'. (Ignore the remainder.)
82' +4' =20'
.· ••'

The smaller of the two numbers (20 in our example) is the multiplication factor to be used .
. ,.: '
Step 3: Write 20 on the answer line for Factor.

Step 4: Write the multiples of 3'-4 '-5' using 20 as the multiplication factor.
60'-80'-100' is the largest multiple of 3 ·-4'-5' that will fit within the overall building size.
