Transportation Sheet: Exercise 1
Transportation Sheet: Exercise 1
Exercise 1:
A factory producing aluminum is supplied with bauxite from three mines
(01, 02, 03) which produce 3, 7 and 5 thousand tons of mineral per week
respectively. There are 4 modes of transportation of bauxite to the factory:
by ship (T1) - by trucks (T2) - by a simple railway wagon (T3) - by special
railway wagons (T4). The total capacity per day is 4 thousand tones for
ships, 3 thousand for cars and 4 thousand each one of the two types of
rail. Transportation costs per ton are given in the following table:
Exercise 2:
A steel company has three mills M1, M2, and M3 which can produce 40,
10, and 20 kilotons of steel each year. Three customers C1, C2, and C3
have requirements of 12, 18, and 40 kilotons respectively in the same
period. The cost in units of $ 1000 of transportation a kiloton of steel from
each mill to each customer is shown in the figure below. Solve the
transportation problem to minimize the total shipping cost.

Exercise 3:
A firm has 3 factories located at A, E, and K which produce the same
product. There are four major product district centers situated at B, C, D,
and M. Average daily product at A, E, and K is 30, 40, and 50 units
respectively. The average daily requirement of this product at B, C, D, and
M is 35, 28, 32, and 25 units respectively. Set an initial solution for the
transportation problem using minimum table method to minimize the
following equation then construct the mathematical model.
F = 6XAB + 8XAC + 8XAD + 5XAM + 5XEB + 11XEC + 9XED + 7XEM + 8XKB +
9XKC + 7XKD + 13XKM
Exercise 4:
Powerco has three electric power plants that supply the needs of four
cities. The costs of sending 1 million Kwh of electricity from plant to city
depend on the distance the electricity must travel. The LP to minimize the
cost of meeting each city’s peak power demand can be represented as
follow:
Min cost = 8X11 + 6X12 + 10X13 + 9X14 + 9X21 + 12X22 + 13X23 + 7X24 +
14X31 + 9X32 + 16X33 + 5X34
Subject to
X11 + X12 + X13 + X14 >= 35
X21 + X22 + X23 + X24 >= 50
X31 + X32 + X33 + X34 >= 40
X11 + X21 + X31 >= 45
X12 + X22 + X32 >= 20
X13 + X23 + X33 >= 30
X14 + X24 + X34 >= 30
Where Xij number of (million) Kwh produced at plant i and sent to city j.
Set an initial solution for the transportation problem using North-west
corner method, minimum cost method, and Vogel’s approximation
method.

Exercise 5:
Identify the quantities that must be transported from each plant to each
warehouse to minimize the total transportation cost using the Vogel's
approximation method.
Exercise 6:
Determine the quantities that must be shipped from sources (A, B, C) to
satisfy the demands of each destination (N, S, E, W) and to minimize the
total transportation cost.
